April 3, 2015 8:00 PM De Tierra Caliente CD Release Party 'Nadie Es Profeta" at The Clubhouse

De Tierra Caliente CD Release Party, plus The Candy Shop Boys, and Papo Buda's Salsa Dura!

Our new CD "Nadie Es Profeta" has been printed and released in Colombia, and on April 3 we're celebrating with a red hot release party at the Clubhouse.

Ryan Tennis will give a short, sweet & warm welcome...

Then enjoy one of NYC's finest Jazz bands The Candy Shop Boys, directed by Bronson's cousin & 4-time ASCAP Award-winner Jesse Elder on piano. These guys are *awesome* NYC jazz veterans, performing an eclectic repertoire of jazz and blues from the 1920's, 30's, and 40's in the tradition of Fats Waller, Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington, as well as unique arrangements of rock classics from the 60's and 70's & some originals.

De Tierra Caliente: Latin, Caribbean and Brazilian rhythms fill the air with bright colors to inspire an irresistible North/South American party. The show that took us through Colombia in February has only gotten tighter.

Papo Buda and his Salsa Dura will keep the fire ablaze with traditional Puerto Rican Salsa and Latin Jazz (things got very spicy at our 2013 CD release).

¡Spread the word!

$20 gets you in, pays for all 3 bands AND gets you a free copy of the CD. Snacks and drinks of all kind are provided.

The Latin Fiesta ensemble has won wide acclaim as a pioneer in the presentation of crossover concerts. The ensemble is led by award winning performers Maria del Pico Taylor, Cuban born pianist and Raymond Taylor, English born violinist. The composition of the group consists of Maria-piano, Raymond Taylor-violin, Vania Taylor-lead vocalist, Cynthia Folio-flute, Fernando Valencia, Tom Lowery, Christian Noguera and Cuco Aponte on Latin percussion, Kevin MacConnell-bass, Liliana Ruiz Davis-Latin/Flamenco dancer. The unorthodox composition of this ensemble lends itself to exciting and versatile programming. Rarely does one hear a crossover concert that shifts from a hot salsa tune to a classical work by Albeniz, and then incorporates a contemporary Latin version of a Baroque Concerto Grosso, or a recent commissioned piece by Oscar Hernandez, Carlos Franzetti, Arturo O'Farrill or Tania Leon, ending with the audience rising out of their seats to join in an Afro-Cuban conga line.

March 28, 2015 8:00 PM AfroTaino Productions' Primavera Equinox Party at A Seed on Diamond Gallery

From AfroTaino Productions' "Keeping You in the Loop" newsletter: "Like almost everyone we know on the East Coast, we are ready for the better weather. Spring is around the corner, with longer hours of precious warm sunlight ready to thaw our joints & limbs. Such an event calls for a celebration! We are doing a dance-friendly event to kick off the Spring season, to celebrate the Equinox. In fact, scratch dance-friendly – more like, dance-mandatory. Join us as we get wild to the sound of Very Be Careful, the Los Angeles-based band known for rocking crowds into the late night hours. We are talking about rootsy Vallenato for the mind, body, & soul. LA Times called them “dispensers of irrepressible dance grooves”. Since 1997, the group successfully channels the sound and texture of early Colombian vallenato recordings, and always gets the party rocking. They’ve made fans of musicians & acts like The Kronos Quartet, and even the legendary Joe Strummer of The Clash. Guess what, Philly: it’s your turn. Bring your dancing shoes, your chosen refreshments (BYO/Potluck), and your zest for the Spring."

March 27, 2015 7:00 PM to Midnight Carnaval en Philly: A Closing Party for "Filadelfia: New Perspectives" at Taller Puertorriqueño

$10 suggested donation

Tropicalismo presents a celebration of Carnaval, hosted and curated by Juanderful (Juan Bustamante) and Gregzinho (Greg Scruggs) in the Roberto P. Hernández Theater. The traditional pre-Lenten celebration of Catholic Europe is now a global phenomenon that is especially strong in Latin America and the Caribbean. As an expression of music, folklore, costume, food, and dance, Carnival represents local culture at its richest. Carnival has also taken root in cities home to immigrant populations who use the event to share their heritage, and Philadelphia is no exception.

Join Tropicalismo, Philly’s leading platform for Afro-Latin-Caribbean culture, as they explore the unique Carnival traditions of the City of Brotherly Love — from Mummers to Carnaval de Puebla to Philly Caribbean Carnival to Brazilian celebrations — with an interactive salon on Carnival culture, visual displays, festive food and refreshments, live dancers, and of course the soundtrack that keeps the Carnival massive partying in the streets.

Featured guests: Edgar Ramirez, San Mateo Carnavalero; Sheila Buchanan, Jesse Engaard, Rabble Rousers NYB; Caribbean American Heritage Foundation of Pennsylvania; Alex Shaw, Alô Brasil; & Los Bomberos de la Calle

With special guests: Jaime Alvarez, Grimaldi Baez, Miguel Antonio Horn, Mark C. Martinez, Michelle Angela Ortiz, José Ortiz Pagán, and Roxana J. Pérez-Méndez

March 15, 2015 6:00 PM Giovana Robinson's CD Release Party at World Cafe Live

Giovana left her native country of Panama 15 years ago in pursuit of the opportunity to live an artistic and creative life as a musician. Her music is a reflection of that journey, built upon her Panamanian roots, and blended with influences of Jazz, Afro-Peruvian, Latin Pop, and world music styles that have inspired her while living and performing in the US.
Giovana started her musical journey by performing in the tri-state area as a pianist/vocalist and co-founder of the Latin music group “Rhythms & Roots” as an educator and entertainer. “Rhythms & Roots” allowed her to work with outstanding musicians in the Philadelphia and New York area such as guitarist/arranger Enrique Lopez, bassist Jorge Bringas, percussionist Marvin Diz, Nestor Villar and Francois Zayas.
In 2005 Giovana was selected as a vocalist to perform with the Philadelphia Music Project’s Latin orchestra led by Salsa legend Johnny Pacheco and Cuban composer/pianist Elio Villafranca. Giovana’s recording debut was a song entitled “Prende la Vela”, on Elio Villafranca’s critically acclaimed debut album “Incantations”.
Her debut album “Introducing Giovana”, is a musical diary of sacrifice, growth, and perseverance told through original songs and new arrangements of classics and folkloric music from her homeland of Panama. The CD is produced and arranged by Grammy nominated producer/pianist/ arranger Elio Villafranca who was an integral part of this project from start to finish. Musicians on the recording include: Elio Villafranca (piano), Yunior Terry (bass & violin), Juancho Herrera (guitar), Francois Zayas (drums), Hector Morales (cajón), and Renatto Thoms (percussion).
Giovana sings from a natural place fueled by emotion. She has an ability to connect with her audience making her a fresh voice to listen for in the New Latin Art music arena.

Announcing the Philadelphia release of
Symphony in Bossa
on Saturday March 14, at World Cafe Live, downstairs. The Minas Sextet is looking forward to performing the entire CD with one of the largest ensembles to ever play World Cafe, including a big band, a string section, a vocal ensemble and guest artists. Tickets are on sale now and include a copy of the CD.

Symphony in Bossa was arranged specially for Minas by Bill Zaccagni. We're dedicating the project to Bill, who passed away in 2007 leaving us this extraordinary gift of music. It took 10 years to complete and was recorded with the prestigious Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia, under the direction of Terell Stafford. Strings were assembled and directed by Anthony Pirollo. Guest artists include Larry McKenna, Terell Stafford, John Swana, Tony Salicandro and Steve Tirpak. Rhythm section expertly performed by Adriano Santos, Leonardo Lucini, Zé Maurício, and a cameo by Rob Hyman, of the famous Hooters.

Minas is also thrilled to be joined by the University of Delaware big band, string and vocal ensembles, under the direction of Tom Palmer.
