Betsayda Machado is the voice of Venezuela. Raised in the small village of El Clavo in the region of Barlovento, her recent rural recordings with lifelong friends, Parranda El Clavo, brought new attention to the Venezuelan Afro-Soul genre called ‘Tambor’. A spirit-shaking percussion and voice fiesta, said to make dancers float.

Mutlu is a Philadelphia based singer songwriter. Mutlu has already built a substantial fan base in his hometown, while winning widespread praise for his prior releases. He's collaborated and toured extensively as a support act with legendary duo Daryl Hall & John Oates and holds the distinction of having made the most guest appearances on Daryl Hall's acclaimed, award winning TV/Internet show "Live From Daryl's House". He's also gained considerable attention for his work with noted singer songwriter Amos Lee, with whom he's toured extensively as a support act and backup vocalist. He was the support act on the North American leg of Joe Jackson's acclaimed "Rain" tour.
Born Mutlu Onaral, he grew up steeped in Philadelphia's deep R&B traditions, eagerly absorbing the fundamentals of old school soul music and incorporating it into his own musical persona. His local success led to a recording deal with Manhattan/EMI Records, which released his acclaimed 2008 debut album Livin' It, produced by the late, great TBoneWolk, and featuring guest appearances by Daryl Hall, Amos Lee, G. Love and Raheem DeVaughn. His latest release is the Caffeine & Whiskey EP which he coproduced with songwriter/producer Darius Amendolia.

Continuing the exploration started by our Sun Ra Mixtape Series celebrating the influence of the Philadelphia, visionary musician, philosopher, composer and band leader, Sun Ra, Philadelphia Jazz Project present, Satellites Are Spinning: A Sizzling, Sonic Celebration of Sun Ra. This concert series features 8 performances at some of the region's most important venues including; The Barnes Foundation, Ardmore Music Hall, Johnny Brenda's, The Planetarium of The Franklin Institute and World Cafe Live. Hosted by WRTI radio deejay, J. Michael Harrison.
Raphael Xavier is a breaker/dancer, rapper, music producer, comedian, photographer and author. He is best known for re-invigorating the B-boying community in Philadelphia. He started choreographing with the Brandywine School of Ballet in 1995. He then, joined Rennie Harris Puremovement, the longest running Hip-Hop dance company. He would continue on to become a core member of the RHPM company and is now an alumnus. He has received many awards and recognition for his choreographic work from 1999 to the present. Xavier gives lectures and dance classes internationally on Hip-Hop and its history. In 2013, Xavier was honored with a Pew Fellowships In The Arts award. Currently, Raphael Xavier is working on a book titled "Breaking Text / Defining Of A Culture" and serves as creator/producer of the multi-media, new wave, circus called, RAPHSTRAVAGANZA: The Kinetic Experience.

Join master Afro-Brazilian percussionist on a journey to the cradle of Afro-Brazilian culture, Salvador, Bahia. Over a one or two week period, spend your days studying intensively with Dende and other guest master teaching artists, enjoying the beaches and Afro-Brazilian cuisine. Spend your nights taking in shows of bands like Olodum, Ile Aiye and Dende's alma mater Timbalada. Attend a candomble ceremony during the Festa do Caboclo, visit the city of Cachoeira and perform together with Samba Fugueirao during the Festa de Sao Joao!

“Semillas Ancestrales” te invita a este taller de elaboraci贸n de tu tambor Medicinal de mano. El uso de el Tambor se remonta a las culturas m谩s antiguas en el planeta. El tambor es un instrumento de poder, llamado tambi茅n una “medicina” porque a trav茅s de su conexi贸n con el aire permite entrar en estados que inducen a la calma, serenidad, sanidad y balance arm贸nico de el ser.
El tambor es el primer latir de el universo, el latir de el hombre. Este taller te guiar谩 a poner de tu propia esencia y elaborar el latir de tu coraz贸n, a la manera m谩s antigua, guiado por un instructor en las medicinas antiguas y con el uso de materiales org谩nicos los cuales han sido presentados en ofrenda a los rumbos de el universo y en rituales de honra hacia la energ铆a que los provee.
Este taller te guiara paso a paso en el ritual de elaboraci贸n, consagraci贸n y uso de el tambor de mano. Este tu tambor se consagrara para que te sirva como veh铆culo sanador para ti y para ser usado en frecuencias de sanacionl para pacientes con salud f铆sica y emocional quebrantada.
Este taller tiene un costo de $80 d贸lares.
El taller incluye todos los materiales tales como base de 12-14 inches de tambor, piel de cabra, chivo o alce, m谩s baqueta para tocar, piel para tejido de el tambor, plumas y chaquira de adorno.

”Semillas Ancestrales” (Ancestral Seeds) invites you to this workshop of ancestral hand drum making. The use of the drum dates back to the oldest tribes in the universe. It is also called “medicine” because with its sound as a product of vibration and the wind, it creates waves that connect with the human frequency, aligning and in sync with the human body.
In this workshop you will be guided by an instructor in the ancestral medicines to make your own hand drum. This ceremony of hand-drum making will be consecrated to give thanks to the elements from nature that provided it. This hand-drum will be a healing tool for you and to be used as means of elevating vibrational frequency on individuals with fractured health and their emotional being.
The workshop cost $80 dollars.
The cost includes all the materials such as a 12-14 inches drum frame, leather trims for lacing, drum beaters, leather from elk, goat or moose, rawhide for drum, feathers and crystal beads for decoration.

Through the creation of a medicine hand drum, you will honor our brother the animal that let us use his hide for the drum and the healing vibration it brings. Brenda” Soaringhawk” is a strong advocate of education on indigenous matters and firmly believes in the process of birthing of a drum and its healing sound.

Arturo O’Farrill, pianist, composer, and educator, was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Arturo’s professional career began with the Carla Bley Band and continued as a solo performer with a wide spectrum of artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Belafonte.
In 2007, he founded the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the performance, education, and preservation of Afro-Latin music.
In December 2010, Arturo traveled with the original Chico O’Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra to Cuba, returning his father’s musicians to his homeland. He continues to travel to Cuba regularly as an informal Cultural Ambassador, working with Cuban musicians, dancers, and students, bringing local musicians from Cuba to the US and American musicians to Cuba. Currently, Arturo is the Director of Jazz Studies at CUNY’s Brooklyn College.
Arturo’s well-reviewed and highly praised “Afro-Latin Jazz Suite” from the album CUBA: The Conversation Continues (Mot茅ma) took the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition.

**Gerald Veasley**
Gerald Veasley's musical odyssey has taken him to the top of the contemporary music world as a bassist, bandleader, composer, producer and educator. He has recorded and/or performed with many of the world' stop performers in many genres of music such as; Chuck Loeb, Maysa, Kim Waters, Nick Colionne, Special EFX, Pieces of a Dream, McCoy Tyner, Gerald Levert, Teddy Pendergrass, Nnenna Freelon, Philip Bailey, the Dixie Hummingbirds, John Blake, Phil Perry, Will Downing and Pat Martino. His performance as a bassist has been top shelf, as his memorable work with the late, great Grover Washington Jr., Joe Zawinul, and the Jaco Pastorius Big Band attests.

Having performed with a diverse range of artists from Alicia Keys to Eddie Palmieri, percussionist Pablo Batista is a master percussionist. He is joined by Bass BootCamp (BBC) faculty member Chico Huff, one of the best bass players to come out of the vibrant Philadelphia music scene. BBC co-founder and Joe Zawinul / Grover Washington alum Gerald Veasley, and other faculty members will jam with Pablo in a finale to be remembered.

The Foundation Singers formed as a trio in early 2002. They began as back-up vocalists for a nationally known Philadelphia musician/ storyteller. They have since stepped out into the fore to uplift and inspire eager folk enthusiasts and music lovers alike. Their unique blend of air-tight harmony and soulful delivery produce an angelic sound which captivates audiences wherever they perform. Their repertoire includes folk, spirituals and jazz.
