April 11, 2026 2:00-5:00PM Guinea: Mask in Motion
West African Mask in Motion Community Series
Journey into the vibrant masking traditions of Guinea — where rhythm leads, movement speaks, and the mask becomes a bridge between community and continuity.
This immersive gathering brings Guinean mask traditions into motion through live drumming, mask performance, and cultural interpretation rooted in respect and authenticity.
Presented as part of Sira: A Virtual Museum of West African Masks and Their Stories, this experience is not only a community encounter — it is also part of the museum’s creation. Live filming and documentation will take place during the event, capturing the movement, sound, and communal energy that will become part of the evolving Sira virtual museum.
By attending, you are not simply witnessing tradition — you are contributing to the living archive that Sira is building.
What is Sira: A Virtual Museum of West African Masks and Their Stories?
Sira is a groundbreaking digital museum and immersive platform developed by Delou Africa, Inc., reimagining how audiences encounter West African mask traditions. The name Sira, from the Malinké language, means “path” or “journey,” reflecting how masking traditions are experienced—through movement, ceremony, and the transmission of knowledge over time.
Structured through four guiding pillars—Stories, Ideas, Rites, and Ancestry—Sira presents masking traditions as living cultural pathways. These interconnected elements reveal how masks carry narrative, embody social and philosophical meaning, take form, and remain rooted in lineage and ancestral presence.
Through immersive digital tools, Sira expands access beyond geographic and institutional boundaries, inviting audiences to encounter masks not as static artifacts, but as evolving expressions of knowledge, creativity, and communal memory.

Storyville: You Don't Have To Go Home, But... by Aidan Un Friday, April 10, 2026 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM Cost: $5, $3 for Scribe Members You Don’t Have To Go Home, But . . . is an ode to dancing bodies, a grimy love letter to Philly, a story about what to do when the DJ has played the last song, the club’s lights come on, and you gotta go . . . somewhere. Following dancers at different stages of their artistic lives, with legendary party Second Sundae as backdrop, this film examines the possibility of spiritual fulfillment in a socioeconomic configuration that ultimately doesn’t value the practices that make us free. To be preceded by "Hip Hop Life" (USA, 2025, 9 min) by Bernard Cross, Grant Cusaac, Ramon Gilmore Jr., Amina Frink, and Braeden Cross of Scribe's Documentary for History Project for Youth. Aidan Un is a French-Korean filmmaker based in Philadelphia for the past 17 years. When he’s not making films, you can catch him at a Capoeira roda or drumming with Korean Percussion Ensemble 우리얼 (URIOL). |

April 4, 2026 7:30-9:00PM Harold Smith, Didgeridoo with Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble at The Clef Club of Jazz
PNC Arts Alive Jazz Cultural Voices Series is extremely proud to present a unique performance featuring celebrated didgeridoo player Harold E. Smith with accompaniment by Philadelphia’s own Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble.
Mt. Airy’s own Harold E. Smith has carved out a rare and remarkable niche as Philadelphia’s premier didgeridoo player—perhaps the only one. The didgeridoo, an ancient Aboriginal instrument traditionally made from eucalyptus hollowed by termites, produces a deep, resonant tone that Smith transforms into an astonishing range of sound: meditative drones, pulsing rhythms, even playful barks.
A lifelong jazz musician, Smith discovered the didgeridoo nearly three decades ago, blending world music traditions with the improvisational spirit of jazz. His performances have taken him from Philadelphia’s Sedgwick Cultural Center to collaborations with acclaimed artists such as Byard Lancaster, Steve Turre, and Badal Roy. His self-released album, In the Valley of Sacred Sound, earned praise from DownBeat magazine for the “surprising versatility” of his didgeridoo sound—at once earthy, spiritual, and sonically rich.
Originally from Pittsburgh, Smith began as a jazz drummer, studying with the legendary Elvin Jones and performing alongside innovators like Sam Rivers and Joe McPhee during New York’s avant-garde loft era. A knee injury in the early 1990s ended his drumming career but opened the door to a new creative path. The didgeridoo became his voice—an instrument through which he channels both ancient traditions and contemporary jazz innovation.
Today, Harold E. Smith’s performances are more than concerts—they are transcendent journeys into rhythm, sound, and spirit. Smith, along with Apreggio, will fill the Clef Club stage with boundless musical energy and will undoubtedly immerse you in the soul and very essence of contemporary jazz innovation.
