December 11, 2011 Ximena Sariñana at World Cafe Live PHL 8:00 PM

When Mexican vocalist Ximena Sariñana (hi-MEN-a sa-rin-YAH-na) released her debut solo album, Mediocre, in 2008, Rolling Stone gave it four stars and praised it as “one of the strongest debuts from a female singer-songwriter since Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me.” Recording the Spanish-language album was a natural step for Sariñana, who had risen to fame in her homeland as a child actress and had fronted a successful indie band for four years. “In Mexico, people believed in me as an artist,” says the fully bilingual 25-year-old. So when she began thinking about recording an album in English she was confronted with a tough decision: “Either stay in my country, where everyone knows who I am, or start from scratch and convince people that I’m worth it.” She chose the latter.
The result is a collection of songs that showcase her deep, striking voice, smart, thoughtful lyrics and offbeat personality.

December 10, 2011 "Matuto" at World Cafe Live PHL 10:30 PM

Matuto with Zongo Junction & F!

In 2002, guitarist and singer Clay Ross moved from South Carolina to New York in pursuit of the jazz muse. Several years later he found himself in Recife, studying the regions folkloric music, bringing him by a circuitous route to reappraise the folk and blues traditions of his native south and conceive the idea of marrying them to the Northeastern Brazilian rhythms of maracatu, forró, and coco. Back in New York he called on accordionist Rob Curto, master exponent of forró, and they set out to combine their repertoires into an extensive library of Pan-American influences and form a band. With a crack coterie of renowned musicians sharing a love of roots music, Brazilian styles, and improvisational experimentation, Matuto deliver an inspirational live experience direct from the heart of New York City's global culture.

The William Penn Charter School will host a benefit to raise money for the Quaker community in Holguin, Cuba, that is in dire need of financial assistance and supplies for living, as well as materials for rebuilding their church and other buildings.

On Friday, December 2, Conjunto Philadelphia, a Cuban ensemble directed by Jeff Torchon, will be headlining this benefit event. Jeff, a Penn Charter graduate, is currently part of the IT staff at PC, and also teaches music and directs the MS and US Jazz Bands at Germantown Friends School. Penn Charter's acapella group, the Quaker Dozen, will also perform, along with other musical guests. Cuban refreshments will be served and donations will be accepted at the door.

We will also learn more about this Cuban Quaker community and the challenges they face in a presentation from Fran Bradley, a member of George School, who has been running a humanitarian service trip to Cuba for the past 30 years. Another trip is planned for the summer of 2012.

This event will hopefully pave the way for a relationship between Quakers in Cuba and the broader Quaker community here in Philadelphia. Please join us on Friday, December 2 from 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm at Penn Charter's David L. Kurtz Center for the Performing Arts, 3000 West School House Lane, Philadelphia, PA 19144. November 3, 2011 7:30 PM Compañia Flamenca Jose Porcel at the Temple Performing Arts Center

Compañia Flamenca Jose Porcel November 3, 2011 - 7:30 pm The Compañia Flamenca Jose Porcel was founded in Madrid, Spain and is among the premier dance troupes that exhibits the exciting art form of Flamenca. As a folkloric celebration where, even when "theatre art" is being provided, Flamenca retains irresistible erotic appeal and irrepressible enery. Thought to have originated in Andalucia toward the fifteenth century, during the Gypsies' encounter with the inhabitants of southern Spain, it has developed into a 'theatrical performance' only over the past century. Compañia Flamenca Jose Porcel brings this tradition to life vibrantly and colorfully with live musicians, vocalists and of course dancers and has delighted audiences around the world for many years. The Company scored a sensational success with their coast to coast tour of North America in the 2008-2009 season and returns to the United States and Canada in the 2011-2012 season in their thrilling new program “Gypsy Fire”. Performance in Lew Klein Hall .

October 29, 2011 8 PM Elio Villafranca and The Jass Syncopators at the Painted Bride Art Center

ELIO VILLAFRANCA & THE JASS SYNCOPATORS featuring Victor Lewis and special guest, members of Los Pleneros de la 21
Sat. October 29 | 8pm
$25 in advance, $30 day of show

Cuban-born Latin/modern jazz pianist-composer Elio Villafranca, internationally acclaimed for his genre-bending approach to modern Latin jazz, returns to the Bride to deliver a brand new project. Backed by his quintet and members of Los Pleneros de la 21, the fiery instrumentalist challenges the boundaries of jazz by fusing it with the syncopated nature of Afro-Caribbean music forms including ‘Bomba’ of Puerto Rico. Using an interpretive musical approach echoing Duke Ellington’s Colored Syncopators, Villafranca continues to produce unique compositional works. Featuring a folkloric dancer and a diverse group of musicians, Elio Villafranca & The Jass Syncopators strive to create a multi-layered musical/cultural dialogue enabling dancer and each musician to assert their unique artistic voice while maintaining the syncopation of the ensemble’s collective conversation.

Personnel and instrumentation: Victor Lewis- drums, Bruce Harris – trumpet, Greg Tardy – tenor sax, Gregg August – bass, Elio Villafranca – piano / compositions. Los Pleneros de la 21: Loisa Gutierrez-Rivera – dancer, Juango Gutierrez – barril-buleador, Nelson Mateo Gonzalez – barril-primo. Elio Villafranca played the Bride in February 2011 as accompaniment to the Philly debut of Cuban-born drummer-leader Francisco Mela.

His last performance at the Bride back in February as accompaniment to the Philly debut of Cuban-born drummer-leader Francisco Mela, Villafranca raised the roof with his tantalizing Afro-Cuban infused improvisational solos. Audiences anticipating Villafranca’s spiritually sublime passage through Cuba as leader need wait no longer. Fans of progressive jazz and world music will all want to grab a seat for this trip!

The fiery instrumentalist-composer is internationally acclaimed for his genre-bending approach to modern Latin jazz. He effortlessly combines the rhythmic vitality of his native Cuba with a straight ahead sensibility steeped in the bop tradition, and the result is a music that is stunning and fresh, but that resonates powerfully with the influence of his beloved forebears. Full of highly complex rhythms yet sophisticated and refined and emotionally expressive, his work has earned respect from Cuba’s performing-recording piano forefathers including Chucho Valdes, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, as well as the great pioneers of other traditions including Paquito d’Rivera, Wynton Marsalis, Giovanni Hidalgo, and Dafnis Prieto. Villafranca often collaborates with Jass Syncopaters, a variable-lineup group that has included Philly’s own Terrell Stafford (Temple University, Jazz Studies Dept.), legendary drummer Billy Hart, as well as Sean Jones, and Greg Tardy. The evening’s personnel and instrument configuration will be announced soon!

October 16, 2011 6 PM Creole Choir of Cuba at The Painted Bride Art Center

Sunday. October 16 | 6pm
$30 in advance, $35 day of show
The sweet harmonic sounds and melodies from the Creole Choir of Cuba brought audience members to their feet with tears of joy. … Spiritually uplifting … A must see for the whole family!” - The Voice

“Celebratory, with brisk Haitian rhythms and endlessly inventive vocal combinations.”
- The New York Times

Prepare to be blown away by the jubilant and sublime Creole Choir of Cuba. With vibrant dancing, spectacular harmonies, and soul-stirring melodies, these showstoppers perform undiscovered musical treasures from Haiti, Dominica, and Cuba.

This uniquely impassioned singing group, celebrating roots, resistance and the irresistible rhythms of life, embarks on their first major U.S. city tour including the Bride in Philadelphia. Regional audiences will have the thrilling opportunity to witness the vibrant Choir just before they become the next international world music sensation. This will be a must see music show of the fall season!

Real World recording artists The Creole Choir of Cuba are an entirely fresh export, easily the most original vocal group to come out of their island country in many years. On the heals of their album release TANDE-LA (“listen”) performed to critical acclaim and sold-out houses in the UK, weeks following the album’s release in the U.S., The Creole Choir debuts Philadelphia. A performance slated to take place earlier this year (Jan of 2011 – canceled due to enhanced visa clearance measures) the now highly sought after ensemble follows through with its promise to share the songs and stories of their Haitian ancestors.

“Desandann” – the Choir’s Cuban name — literally means “descendents,” emerged in 1994 a time when Cubans faced difficult times due to economic collapse following the the fall of Soviet USSR. In response to food, clean water and electric shortages, the singers decided shift into survival mode and re-forge resistance songs and laments of their forebears and pay homage to the freedom songs passed down in their families beginning in the early 19th century. Since first appearing at the Edinburgh Festival in 2009, the choir’s mesmerizing sound, jubilant dancing and deep spirit has made them into an instant hit in Europe.

October 8, 2011 9 PM World Cafe Live PHL Bio Ritmo

Bio Ritmo

Neither today nor ever before has there been a salsa group quite like Bio Ritmo. The group undeniably plays with the beat and attitude of ’70s-era salsa dura (hard salsa), but the conventionality stops there. With a roster that includes former rastas, punks, rockers, and jazzistas, Bio Ritmo can’t help but bring an exhilarating unorthodoxy to its music. It’s “salsa for the Space Age,” with a ridiculously tight and competent band that make the record interesting to listen to, while unmistakably danceable. Bio Ritmo has proved it is still possible to be true to the roots while expanding the parameters of their music in an intelligent, thoughtful and entertaining way.

October 7, 2011 8 PM PhillyBloco at World Cafe Live Wilmington

PhillyBloco is modeled after the blocos of Rio de Janeiro, with their large percussion sections and harmonic/vocal accompaniment. Our group is comprised of twelve drummers, electric guitar, bass guitar, vocals, horn section, accordion, and Brazilian dancers. The group performs a raucous mash-up of SAMBA, FUNK, REGGAE and more made popular by both Brazilian and non-Brazilian artists including: Olodum, Timbalada, Monobloco, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder. The one constant in all of our music is a heavy percussive element (12 drummers!) that we use to explore the tremendous range of Brazilian rhythms, applying our own unique creativity and energy to each arrangement.
PhillyBloco's 20+ members perform a raucous mash-up of Samba, Funk, Reggae and more, all set to the infectious drumming of Brazilian Carnival. Earth Shaking Rhythms. Boundless Energy. Serious Fun. PhillyBloco...Get ready to Dance!"

Hi Folks ... Quint Lange is a fabulous teacher!!! We are having loads of fun!

1st time and experienced players are welcome!

If you have never taken a class with Quint ... he'll take us through the basic Baba Olatunji warm up excercises (GUN GO DO drum language) at the beginning of each session to get us all on the same page. Any new rhythm introduced includes all of the djimbe, bell & dun parts. If there is a song, that will be included. Lead drummer parts are also taught when appropriate. The hand outs are superb!!!
Whether on club dates from St. Barthe to the Turks and Caicos, to Key West and points north to Bar Harbor, Maine; or in classroom and concert settings in Key West, at the Institute du Developpment de la Personne in Quebec, or having assisted and performed with Babatunde Olatunji at the Omega Institute in New York St, it has been Quint’s pleasure and privilege to play drums for dancers for nearly twenty five years.

“WE ARE THE DRUM” is a hand drumming workshop (and jun-jun/bell for those interested) for beginning to “advancing” players, starting with the basics as given by Babatunde Olatunji and moving into West African and Afro Caribbean rhythms with the emphasis on pulse, flow and developing the awareness that as drummers, and musicians in general, we walk a fine line between playing and being played by the music. Making music together involves a collective awareness, a communal agreement as to how we relate to and use the flow of time, choosing moments of sound and silence to create rhythm. Our goal as a drum ensemble is to become one drummer with as many hands as are playing.

Drumming, dancing and singing have the power to elate, to heal, and to heighten one’s spiritual and physical well being. Music is a gift we are all blessed with to one extent or another and the way to honor that gift is to use it and to share it, through teaching, performing, or simply sending a joyful noise into the universe around us.

Sergent Garcia, a massive star around the globe, is set to invade North America with a six-week concert tour starting this August. One of the pioneering figures in the global Latin Alternative movement, Bruno Garcia (a.k.a. Sergent Garcia) is bringing his uplifting and defiant sound to festivals and clubs across the US and Canada. A revolutionary at heart, Sergent Garcia takes stabs at the status quo with hard-hitting lyrics blended with funky grooves spiked with salsa, reggae, cumbia, ska, rock and hip-hop. Sergent Garcia’s albums have sold hundreds of thousands of copies, and his latest, Una y Otra Vez (Time and Time Again) is now available on the Cumbancha label. A critically-acclaimed tour-de-force, Una y Otra Vez offers a musical journey to the heart of Colombia, currently the source for some of Latin America’s hottest sounds. Having become enchanted with the country after a highly successful Latin American tour, Bruno returned to Colombia, deepening his friendships and musical connections through collaborations with the stars of the vital underground electrotropical scene, including Bomba Estéreo, La Mojarra Eléctrica, La-33, Sidestepper and others. About.com says of the album, “It’s fresh, it’s topical, it’s relevant, and it’s fun enough to blast from your car speakers ad infinitum until the warm weather subsides (and beyond).”

Sergent Garcia emerged out of the churning underground musique metisses movement of Paris in the 1990s where punk rock attitude, hip hop swagger, latin swing and reggae consciousness blended together to form a powerful sound. Having grown up in a house where Spanish, French, Algerian and West African culture overlapped, Bruno Garcia first earned fame with the French punk rock band Ludwig von 88. After falling in love with Latin and Caribbean music, Bruno created the Sergent Garcia persona and quickly became one of Europe and Latin America’s most successful artists. A stirring combination of grooving multicultural grooves and outspoken political expression continues to be the heart of the Sergent Garcia sound and the band’s live shows are renowned worldwide for their sense of celebration and conviction.

September 8, 2011 Jose Conde at World Cafe Live Upstairs 10 pm

Jose Conde
José Conde’s music fits into the powerfully danceable rhythmic system of Afro-Cuban music. A Cuban would say it’s got sabor de clave. He writes his own lyrics, too, and they have party flavor and humor, but they also have substance. Conde does his own arrangements – something few singers do – so both the charts and the production grow organically out of the words, and his cd Ay! Que Rico has been praised as “innovative, highly danceable, and pleasantly cerebral” (New York Newsday).
