February 6, 2015 6:00-9:00 PM First Friday at The Barnes Foundation : CARNAVAL!

FIRST FRIDAY! CARNAVAL
Bem-vindos! We’re heating up February’s First Friday Carnaval-style, with samba dancers and capoeira performers. Feel the energy of Brazil through live performances merging dance, rhythm, and martial arts. Unwind with cocktails and after-hours access to the collection. Includes an eye-opening short talk on our African collection. In partnership with Brazilian Day Philadelphia.

6–7 pm Xande Cruz and PhillyBloco Performance
With a sound as rich and diverse as his native São Paulo, Xande Cruz adeptly blends urban and traditional rhythms in a soulful way like none other. PhillyBloco is modeled after the blocos of Rio de Janeiro, Carnaval bands with large percussion sections made up of 12 drummers. The performance explores the tremendous range of Brazilian rhythms.

7–7:30 pm African collection talk

7:30–8:30 pm Philly Bloco and capoeira performance
Capoeira was born out of the struggle for freedom. African slaves brought it to Brazil in the 16th century and cleverly disguised this powerful form of self-defense as a harmless dance. To hide their fighting spirit from their masters, the earliest capoeiristas combined playful, graceful dance and acrobatic movements with deadly kicks. While training, they avoided injuries by keeping direct physical contact to a minimum. Songs, percussion instruments, and clapping completed the ritual. For the master, capoeira was merely entertainment; for the slave, it was a fight for liberation.

Cocktails and light fare available for purchase.
Featured dish: Feijoada. Afro-Brazilian stew of black eye peas, beef, okra and kale served over orange scented rice.

January 31, 2015 8:00 PM Oliver Mtukudzi and The Black Spirits at Longwood Gardens

Zimbabwe's pride, its most successful artist and national treasure, Oliver Mtukudzi is gifted with a deep and gusty voice plus a talent for writing songs that reflect on the daily life and struggles of his people. 'Tuku', as he is known, began performing in 1977 and has earned a devoted following across Africa and beyond, all the while incorporating elements of different musical traditions. A member of Zimbabwe's Korekore tribe, he sings in the nation's dominant Shona language as well as Ndebele and English.

Tuku's music is heavily influenced by a humanist chimurenga ethos, which, in turn, is inspired by the hypnotic rhythms of the mbira (thumb piano). His music also incorporates South Africa mbaqanga, the energetic Zimbabwean pop style jit, and the traditional kateke drumming of his clan. One of Tuku's biggest fans is Bonnie Raitt, who has not only called Tuku "a treasure," and recorded a cover of "Hear me Lord" but also credits Tuku as the inspiration for the song "One Belief Away" on her album Fundamental.

5020 Larchwood Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19143
Join Cultural Bridge Project for a screening of the feature documentary, "Throw Down Your Heart" on Wednesday, January 28th in West Philly. Expect popcorn and inspiration. Feel free to bring a friend, just let us know via the thousand ways of communicating (a comment on here is great!) so we know how many to expect :)

“Throw Down Your Heart” follows American banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck on his journey to Africa to explore the little known African roots of the banjo and record an album. It’s a boundary-breaking musical adventure that celebrates the beauty and complexity of Africa – an Africa that is very different from what is often seen in the media today.

...Béla’s journey was also motivated by a deep love of African music. Béla was inspired by music from all across the continent, and very often he could hear a place for his banjo. When Béla had a year off from his band, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, he realized it was the perfect opportunity to follow his dream – travel to Africa to collaborate with African musicians.

As Béla travels across Africa, he forges both musical and personal connections. Using his banjo, he transcends barriers of language and culture, finding common ground with musicians from very different backgrounds and creating some of the most meaningful music of his career.

January 17, 2015

Featuring

Host - Ron Kravitz
This show marks our 17th year anniversary!
My musical journey began at an early age, when my mom “tricked” me into taking "those voice lessons”, which I ended up loving.
At other points along the path, rhythm & the discovery of “movement”, became the other essential and accompanying pieces. I give thanks to all my teachers, friends, colleagues and family members for their love, support & inspiration along the way. There has been nothing quite as profound as this experience of listening, "playing" together, and then sharing it, which continually brings me joy and connection with We and a Greater Spirit!
Blessings to us all in the New Year!

Comedian - Aviva PerloAviva has been sharing improvisational performance art with ages 5-105 for over 15 years. She believes life itself is a stage, and truth is stranger than fiction. Her performances are rated 'D & P', deep and playful.

Guitarists - Bill DeHaven and Michael StaufferMichael and Bill have each been playing guitar and percussion for half a lifetime, exploring rock, psychedelic jams, Afro-latin jazz, and purely improvisational music for Group Motion contact improv workshops. Tonight they come together on guitar with special guest, Randy Decker on percussion as The Choco Brothers, to show their new project, a study of jazz standards.

Vocalist - Megan HenryMegan studied music through Oberlin Conservatory and then on to Manhattan School of Music.
After singing classical music for many years she was introduced to free improvisation by Rhiannon, and then a year later to the Music for People improvisation program. Through these experiences she has been able to tap into another form of music that is from the heart and the spirit, and that is where she lives. It isn't new, as nothing is new on the earth, but it is honest and she finds it to be one of the most profound ways of expression.

Percussionists - Bret Cohen & Radha Gopinath Das Marinelli"Radha Gopinath Das Marinelli and Bret Cohen are two people based in Philadelphia that have spent their lives studying and cultivating the percussive arts. They share a practice that is sometimes called Praying Music, or Drummer's Sanctuary, wherein life happens. Nature comes through, consciousness is altered, love is felt, the present moment is, community is shared."

January 16, 2015 8:00 PM "METALACHI'' The First and Only Heavy Metal Mariachi Band at Ortlieb's

What began as an innocent evening of snorting horse tranquilizers with seven members of the village jai alai team in a Super Ocho motor lodge in Veracruz, Mexico became an event that literally gave birth to the greatest metal band to ever live. For it was on that hot summer night in 1982 that Consuela Espinoza stumbled out of her dilapidated shanty and fell face-first into rock-n-roll history.
Nine months later, unhampered by Consuela's steady regime of tequila and ill-advised sumo lessons, five bastard children were born. Unable to care for her hungry offspring -- and concerned that five children would seriously interfere with her Tuesday night karaoke league -- Consuela made a decision that would forever alter the course of music history. Consuela hastily packed the babies into the saddlebags of a burro and sent her children off to American in search of a better life. 14 years later and nearly dead from dehydration, the emaciated burro knelt down to drink from the stagnant waters of the Rio Grande just outside of Juarez, Mexico -- mere yards from the U.S. border. With one fleeting burst of energy, the Brothers Espinoza Cinco climbed from their leather restraints and scampered the vast reach of the river, collapsing onto the sweet, amber-hued American soil. As if by destiny, lodged in the sand beneath their tanned faces was a square cardboard record sleeve upon which were the holy metal words "PARANOID" and "BLACK SABBATH." For many years to follow, this definitive black metal album served not only as a teacher and mentor... but also as a friend. It was these bleak and humble beginnings that nurtured the seed that would eventually grow to be the band we know today. Often referred to as the greatest heavy metal band to ever live...
