Outdoor Drum Circles this Weekend

Saturday, June 4, 2011
Fun for the Family at the 74th Annual PMFS Strawberry Festival Bring your framily, spread a picnic blanket and stay for the day! Stay for the day to enjoy the following performances: 11am-12pm: The Spinning Leaves performance revolves around the songs of Barbara Gettes and Michael Baker. Their music is steeped in traditional American melodies with garnishes of psychedelic folk and new weird Americana. These artists aren't afraid to mix it up, relying on everything from stomps and horns to such instruments as the sitar, oud, and pump organ to brandish their signature sound. 12:30pm-2pm: Ron Kravitz facilitates a Drumming and Percussion Circle and will guide participants in an improvisational percussion session. Bring your home-style percussion instruments (pots, pans, lids, spoons, small bongos, etc) and join the fun in creating drum-style sounds. Special guest: Lara Vracarich, Creative Spirit Fusion, Expressive Dance, Rhythm and Vocalization. 2pm-3pm: Sherry Canary and the Kool Katz play a mix of standards in the style of Django Reinhart, along with their own original msuic in the gypsy jazz genre. Puppeteers from the Renaissance Artist Puppet Company will perform in an interactive walk-around throughout the day. The Give and Take Jugglers blend their incredible juggling skills with comedy and audience participation throughout the day.

Since its inception fifteen years ago, this uniquely robust orchestra of percussionists has traveled the road on a journey to explore the new compositional possibilities in world music by fusing four percussion batteries into one distinct voice: North Indian tabla, Afro Cuban bata, Brazilian samba and West African djembe. Known for its high-energy live performances, audiences are literally swept up and away from their seats to travel to four corners of the globe. The sheer sonic force has shaken the foundation of countless houses and concert halls, leaving audiences in awe each time. The ensemble’s explosive energy, artistic authenticity and refreshing compositional sensibility has earned Spoken Hand critical acclaim, awards and performance invitations both regionally and nationally. Spoken Hand returns home to the Bride to celebrate its 15th anniversary and to share new and exciting compositional works.
