May 4, 2017 8:00PM Emel Mathlouthi with Briana Marlea at World Cafe Live PHL

EMEL MATHLOUTHI

Prominent Tunisian Singer/Songwriter Emel returns with Ensen, out now.

From her home in New York Emel reaches for the international stage with Ensen, an album recorded in seven countries with numerous producers including Valgeir Sigurðsson (Sigur Ros).

Emel’s first album, Kelmti Horra (My Word is Free), introduced her groundbreaking marriage of sounds steeped in Tunisian rhythms and electronic beats. On Ensen, she’s developed a style that’s even more uniquely her own, combining organic and electronic sounds to produce a record that will appeal to any lover of innovative and heartfelt music. “It took a couple of years to realize the visions that were popping up inside me,” Emel says. “I faced resistance from people wanting to keep me confined to an ‘ethnic box’ and trying to limit my creative freedom.”

BRIANA MARELA

Born and raised in Seattle, Briana Marela has traveled some but has always called the state of Washington home. There is a sense of place in her music — a sense of nature, of the northwest and of the unique space that exists between cities and wilderness. More than that, however, Briana draws inspiration from the people around her. Not just the emotions they evoke, but also the tactile feelings those emotions bring us: the warmth of affection; the weightlessness of joy; the grounded, anchored feeling of love. That gift for illuminating the abstract is counterbalanced by a remarkable clarity in Briana's lyrics, and that straightforwardness manifests itself in powerful ways. Briana's lyrics are forceful, and throughout her second album All Around Us, traditional song structure gives way to plainspoken declarations that pull back the record's shroud.

April 30, 2017 6:00 -11:00PM The Outsiders: Improvised and Creative Music Festival

The Outsiders Improvised & Creative Music Festival 2017 - April 30, 2017
Philly Celebrates Jazz and International Jazz Day with renowned bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma and friends at the Philadelphia International House Ibrahim Theater

Philadelphia, PA – Internationally renowned bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma is pleased to present The Outsiders Improvised & Creative Music Festival for the third year in a row, a celebration of creative, progressive improvised music. The concert takes place on International Jazz Day, Saturday, April 30, 2017 from 7pm — 11pm at The International House, 3701 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA . Admission is $25 for Adults and $15 for students with I.D.
Organic Soul Food Catering by Abu The Juiceman.

The 2016 Festival brought together people of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities for an evening celebrating Philadelphia's rich musical tapestry—the event was sold out with a waiting list to get in. Whereas last year’s theme was the programming together of “old heads” with the up-and-coming young firebrands of the Philly scene, this year the emphasis is on new connections overall. Audiences will be treated to sets performed by stellar musicians in exciting new combinations curated by Jamaaladeen Tacuma. Tacuma brings his insight and long history as an internationally touring creative composer and improviser to bear on assembling these premiere configurations.

Tacuma notes that in recent years, Jazz festivals around the world are becoming increasingly conservative. Festivals now demand artists whose ensembles and compositions have a proven track record of positive reviews, resulting in commercialized and diluted programming that becomes ubiquitous and overly familiar. The 2017 Outsiders Festival aims to bring back the adventurous and experimental spirit that was once more encouraged.

With this idea of promoting vibrant, healthy, risk-taking freedom of expression, Tacuma has selected a lineup that includes saxophonist David Murray, multi-instrumentalist and composer Kahil El Zabar, trombonist Craig Harris, the Nick Millevoi Quartet, Harriet Tubman Trio, guitarist Chuck Hammer, pianist Yoichi Uzeki, Electronic Sound Scapes Producer Moshe Black, and many more.

Complete Lineup:

David Murray, Kahil EL Zabar, Craig Harris, Chuck Hammer, Jamie Saft, Nick Millevoi Quartet - Matt Engle, Brian Marsella, Harriet Tubman - JT Lewis, Brandon Ross, Melvin Gibbs, Keir Neuringer, Yoichi Uzeki, David Fishkin, Moshe Black, Asimina Chremos, Brad Forbes, Tim Hutson, iNFiNiEN- Jordan Berger, Tom Cullen, Chrissie Loftus, Matt Hollenberg

April 23, 2017 7:30PM Lakou Mizik - A Collective of Musicians from Haiti at Crossroads

Lakou Mizik is a multigenerational collective of Haitian musicians formed in the aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake. The group includes elder legends and rising young talents, united in a mission to honor the healing spirit of their collective culture and communicate a message of pride, strength and hope to their compatriots and the world.

Music is at the core of Haiti’s sense of identity, and its musicians have always played an important role in society, both in documenting the country’s history and helping to shape its path forward. Today, a young generation of artists is keeping this tradition alive, narrating the world they live in through music that is made in their neighborhoods, villages and post-earthquake camps. Lakou Mizik brings together these musical generations in celebration of the cultural continuum while using Haiti’s deep well of creative strength to shine a positive light on this tragically misrepresented country.

April 21, 2017 10:00PM-2:00AM Drum Like a Lady with Dianne "Brieze" Thompson at Dahlak Paradise

SAVE THE DATE & SPREAD THE WORD! Drum Like a Lady Vol.2 is getting percussive on keys, with Dianne Brieze Thompson aka "Badd Kitti"
Host: LaTreice V Branson

Since composing her first song at age four, Dianne ‘Brieze’ Thompson - aka Badd Kitti - has ALWAYS loved and performed music. At age 9, Brieze received her first formal piano lesson from the great Duke Ellington. It was impossible not to be in awe of ‘The Duke’, and it was this experience that inspired Thompson to seriously pursue her music.

Brieze Thompson’s professional career touches many aspects of the industry. As a member of the University of Pittsburgh Jazz Ensemble, she cut her musical teeth performing alongside such jazz legends as James Moody, John Faddis, and Philly’s own Grover Washington, Jr. Brieze was then signed to Harvest records as a member of the gospel-hip hop group “C.Y.D.” and toured with the ‘Harvest Crusade’ playing to stadium crowds across the country. Her own ensemble, ‘Heart & Soul’ was the Word Records Best New Artist, and appeared with gospel greats Richard Smallwood, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Walter Hawkins, and many others. A versatile musician, Brieze has freelanced with too many local bands and musicians to name, performing in popular venues throughout the Tri-State area. She is also a music instructor, and is active in the music community as a volunteer in after-school and summer music programs.

Currently, Brieze Thompson is the founder, vocalist, and keyboardist for “Badd Kitti”. Deeply inspired by Philly's Jazz, and Neo-Soul scenes, Badd Kitti’s music is derived from the elements of Funk at the root of the Philadelphia Sound. As Badd Kitti, Brieze plays a rhythmic keyboard style, in the tradition of Ol’ Skool 70’s Funk. Doubling on Synth and Keytar, Badd Kitti’s music evokes a classic, psychedelic sound, yet naturally crosses into many musical genres from Neo-Soul, Jazz, and Hip Hop, to House, Afro-Cuban Soul and Reggae. As such, Badd Kitti seeks to uphold not just the musical, but the social-political aspects of Funk. Her performance is both a homage to the rich textures of the modern ‘Black Experience’ - as well as a damn Funky Good Time!

April 8, 2017 2:30-3:30PM Afro-Cuban Modern Dance Class with Leilani Chirino

The first Afro-Cuban Modern Dance Class with Leilani Chirino at Sound Space starts this Saturday! There will be live percussion at the class!

Saturday April 8
2:30-3:30
Sound Space (2511 West Girard Avenue, Philadelphia)
$12
($10 for students, dance professionals, and members of philadelphiadance.org)
The class is suitable for dancers of all levels.

Relatively obscure in the United States due to the infamous Cuban embargo, Afro-Cuban Modern dance or "Tecnica Cubana" is a unique blend of North American modern technique (Duncan, Graham, Limón) and European ballet (Ballet Alicia Alonso) with social and sacred Afro-Cuban traditions. The class will start with a warm-up focused on contraction and release techniques and undulation exercises, followed by across-the-floor and choreographed combinations.

Leilani Chirino started dancing at the age of three at the Conservatorio de las Artes de Conchita Espinosa, a Cuban arts academy started in Havana. She later became a principal dancer for the company of Ada Linares, specializing in flamenco, ballet, and modern jazz. In college, she studied Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Cuban modern dance. Afterwards, she worked on incorporating Cuban body movement to her contemporary and modern jazz pieces. She currently also teaches weekly classes on Cuban popular dances.

Leilani’s focus is on mastering the control and isolation of particular muscles in the body, allowing students to take command of their body movements. This class will help students build confidence and develop a new avenue for self-expression, in addition to improving strength, flexibility, and technique.
