November 5, 2017 7:30PM Crossroads Concerts: Kaoru Watanabe & Fumi Tanakadate

Kaoru Watanabe and Fumi Tanakadate
Kaoru Watanabe is a Brooklyn based composer and musician, specializing on the Japanese taiko drum and shinobue flutes.

Born in St. Louis to symphony musician parents, he studied jazz flute and saxophone at the Manhattan School of Music while also performing with New York’s Soh Daiko. After graduating, he moved to Japan to join the internationally renowned taiko drum ensemble Kodo, performing the taiko, traditional Japanese folk dance and song, and especially the various fue (bamboo flute) such as the noh kan, ryuteki and shinobue. From 2005 to 2007, Kaoru served as one of Kodo’s artistic directors and worked closely with the legendary Kabuki actor Bando Tamasaburo, an experience that had a profound effect on his artistic growth.

Fumi Tanakadate is a taiko artist and pianist born in Japan and currently based in New York. She has been studying taiko with Kaoru Watanabe since 2011. With a unique combination of an extensive musical expertise in European Classical music and a background in traditional folk dancing, drumming and flute playing from her local festival in Japan, she quickly became an active member of Néo, Watanabe’s ensemble that aims to blend the nostalgic sound of Japanese traditional festival and theater and the interplay of complex jazz improvisations. She has performed at Joe’s Pub, ShapeShifter Lab, Nublu, National Sawdust and Pioneer Works. Fumi has collaborated with Yuu Ishizuka, Sumie Kaneko, Shane Shanahan, Chieko Kojima, On Ensemble, Alicia Hall Moran and Satoshi Takeishi and performed in Kenny Endo’s 40th Anniversary Tour. Most recently, she was on tour with Kaoru Watanabe and Yuta Sumiyoshi of KODO as a trio.

November 1, 2017 3:30-5:00PM Mexican Identity in the XXI Century (Day of the Dead)

This presentation explores the rich spirituality of Aztec dance. After the Spanish unsuccessfully attempted to eradicate the native cultures of Mexico (including their spiritually-powerful dance and music), they decided to mix aspects of Mexican indigenous traditions with their Catholic traditions. Some native Mexican people used this as a way to preserve mystical and spiritual aspects of Mexican indigenous wisdom. This talk explores Mexican identity and culture and also features a short documentary on the contemporary Aztec dance troupe of which Brujo de la Mancha is the founder.

An altar will be set up, which represents the light of the dead people, (the spirit's needs light to see to come to) and to illuminate the darkness we leave in this country about immigration.

October 29, 2017 8:00PM Latin Roots Live: Combo Chimbita and La Tribu de Abrante

WXPN’s free Latin Roots Live! concert series continues on Sunday, October 29 when dynamic 12-piece Puerto Rican orchestra La Tribu de Abrante performs at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. Special guest opener will be Combo Chimbita. Doors will open at 7 PM, with showtime at 8 PM. Admission to the all-ages show is free via RSVP.

RSVP NOW

La Tribu de Abrante, led by singer, songwriter and chief arranger Hiram Abrante (who sang backup for Tego Calderón and other artists before forming his own group in 2007), melds traditional bomba and plena melodies with salsa, Latin jazz, funk, reggaeton and urban pop. Hiram’s brothers and son are part of the group, which gained a following playing in small clubs in San Juan before signing with White Lion Records, the Puerto Rican urban indie label whose roster has included Calderon, rapper Voltio and Calle 13. La Tribu de Abrante was a best tropical artist category nominee, and its studio debut, Otro Formato de Musica, was nominated for tropical album of the year, in Billboard’s Latin Music Awards earlier this year. Expect a lively dance party punctuated by punchy chants, burning horns and layers of danceable rhythms at their Philadelphia show.

Opening for La Tribu de Abrante will be Combo Chimbita, a quartet of first-generation New Yorkers with Colombian roots that features the powerful vocals of Carolina Oliveros. After releasing two EPs, the group was recommended by Brooklyn magazine in June as “a NYC band you need to hear” and released its debut album, Abya Yala, on the Figure & Ground label. Combo Chimbita explores visual identity (three of the four members wear masks) and champions Tropical Futurism, “the idea that the future doesn’t necessarily have to be this super white Western high-tech Star Wars stuff; that the indigenous ideas and culture of people of color, people of Latin America, can also represent a magical and substantial future.”

October 28, 2017 7:00-10:00PM Taller Puertorriqueño: ‎Diana Sáez and Friends, Passion and Protest: Songs of Resistance

Connecting to Dissonance, our upcoming exhibition of new work by sculptor Miguel Antonio Horn, Taller presents an intimate performance of passionate songs of protest from Spain and the Americas. Through their political commitment and powerful lyricism, artists such as Rafael Hernández, Violeta Parra, Victor Jara, Caetano Veloso, and Joan Manuel Serrat created songs that are emblematic of struggles for freedom and social justice–both past and present. Performers Diana Sáez and Friends (Pável Urkiza, Suzzette Ortiz, and Christian Noguera) offer stirring contemporary renditions of these timeless classics.

This performance is part of Taller’s Diálogo Series, whose goal is to deepen our understanding of broader social issues of struggle, community, economic upheaval, and identity. Funding for Diálogo has been provided by a generous grant from PNC Arts Alive, a multi-year initiative of the PNC Foundation dedicated to supporting visual and performing arts groups with the goal of increasing arts access and engagement in new and innovative ways.

Rich Medina presents

JUMP N FUNK: America’s original Fela Kuti tribute party

Mark Hines (The Marksmen) on projections

A tribute to FELA KUTI & all things AFROBEAT!

Via BBE MUSIC: Starting life as a small New York event aimed at raising awareness for Fela Kuti’s musical message, Rich Medina’s Jump N Funk party has now been rocking dance-floors across the globe for over 15 years. Honoring Fela’s contribution to music as well as his political and cultural legacy, Medina has made his events a platform to celebrate Afro-Life across the Black Diaspora. With guests such as Wunmi, the cast of Fela! On Broadway, Asiko and Antibalas providing captivating live performances, Jump N Funk is so much more than a club night. In creating this compilation to represent the spirit of his events, Rich Medina has chosen an eclectic selection of undeniably afro-tinged, unashamedly life-affirming music. With most tracks either referencing, sampling or inspired by the great man, the record also includes material by Fela himself, as well as son Seun Kuti and long-time band member Tony Allen the inventor of the afrobeat set drum syncopation that is equally as notorious as Fela and his message… The album’s artwork has been lovingly created by Lemi Ghariokwu, the fabled Nigerian artist who designed some of Fela’s most iconic covers. From the record’s sleeve to the music contained within, Jump N Funk is a cultural artifact with one foot in the past, the other in the future. An echo of Fela’s message: a reminder to celebrate, to empower, to progress.

October 27, 2017 7:00PM - 1:00AM Retirement Party and Lease-Burning Party at CEC

"It’s a New Day!” Retirement Party for Ms. Terri, A Fundraiser for the CEC!

Philadelphia, PA – On October 27, 2017 from 7pm-1am the Community Education Center aka the CEC will have a party to celebrate our purchase of the building @ 3500 Lancaster Avenue and the retirement of long time executive director Theresa (Ms. Terri) Shockley. The Lease Burning & Retirement Party for Ms. Terri is a Fundraiser for the CEC.

After nearly a half century of occupying the turn of the century former Quaker Meetinghouse and School the CEC has finally obtained ownership of the building it is indeed a new day for the center. This landmark accomplishment is truly a longtime community endeavor thanks to the efforts of the current and past administrations and boards, many supportive community members, and especially Councilwoman Blackwell and the Philadelphia City Council; the CEC now holds the deed to the building! The CEC is also celebrating the 20years of service and retirement of Executive Director Theresa (Ms. Terri) Shockley. The current Board of Directors along with the Producers’ Guild, who partners with the CEC to present jazz at the center, invites the community to come celebrate both of these important milestones at this fundraising party filled with entertainment, food, and fun. This fundraiser is an important and timely effort for the CEC that will insure that the center stays strong through this significant transition in leadership and property ownership. We hope our community near and far will accept this call to action and rally to both celebrate the legacy of Ms. Terri and support the future of the CEC’s vital presence in West Philadelphia.

The celebration will feature several jazz artists, dancers, and theatre artists who are part of the CEC extended family. There will also be an awards ceremony to recognize some of the many community members whose contributions to the center have meant so much to the organization over the years. The CEC will honor the on-going dedication of volunteer Judith Adamson, and posthumously Randy Dalton, for all that he did for the center.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at The CEC

The group performs a raucous mash-up of SAMBA, FUNK, REGGAE and more made popular by both Brazilian and non-Brazilian artists including: Olodum, Timbalada, Monobloco, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder. The one constant in all of our music is a heavy percussive element (12 drummers!) that we use to explore the tremendous range of Brazilian rhythms, applying our own unique creativity and energy to each arrangement.

Our music is extremely high energy, full of passion and feeling. We want to make people dance, feel good, and give them something to celebrate every time they see us perform!

Dance/movements are intertwined with the strategically placed instrumentals to help fasten the story line. Courtnee Roze natural gift of diversity allows her to explore more challenging material (African breaks, monolog, prejudice, childhood interruptions, culture) among other topics.

This is a designated BYO performance. Acceptable forms of BYO are 6-pack of beer and/or 750ml bottles of wine only; no liquor or open containers are permitted. October 22, 2017 7:00-11:00PM Lila Downs en Philadelphia at the Merriam Theater

October 21, 2017 7:00PM BREAKWATER + CLIP PAYNE'S 420 FUNK MOB (FEAT. MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT/FUNKADELIC AND FRIENDS)

On the third day of 2010, a nearly impossible dream became a reality -- Breakwater reunited. Five of the original eight band members gathered at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia for a homecoming that was 30 years in the making. Breakwater's dedicated fans had longed for a reunion ever since Splashdown prematurely concluded the band's story in 1980. "Breakwater is part of the culture in Philadelphia," explains bassist Steve Green. "There's an age group of people who grew up with our band." Playing before a sold-out crowd, Breakwater reassumed their place on the mantle as one of Philadelphia's most beloved homegrown bands. An audience ranging from early 20-somethings to 60 year-olds experienced what discerning crate diggers and DJs around the world have known for years: when Breakwater splashes down, expect to get soaked by a wave of grooves.

October 15, 2017 7:30PM Crossroads Concerts: Trad. Attack! Music from Estonia

Trad.Attack! has really turned Estonian music scene upside down by bringing traditional music to the big stages, building modern world around its archaic sounds. It is often said that the band with its three members sounds so big that you would think there’s much more people on the stage.

They take traditional songs – sometimes starting with scratchy recordings of long vanished village voices – and build pulsating rhythmic structures, creating an impressively big sound from acoustic 12-string guitar, drums and an array of whistles, bagpipes and jew’s harps.

All three band members grew up with music around them and each had been active on the Estonian music scene for more than 15 years before they started Trad.Attack! in 2014. In the beginning it was meant to be just simple, fun and experimental. Surprisingly for the band, their first tune “Kooreke” became a hit in Estonia… Since then the band has received 14 Music Awards in Estonia, released their debut album “AH!” recognized internationally and toured in 29 countries from China to Canada, including significant showcase festivals as WOMEX, Eurosonic and Transmusicales.

October 15, 2017 4:00-7:00PM Philadelphia Folklore Project 30th Birthday/Movie Premiere

To celebrate our 30th birthday, the Folklore Project will be hosting a premiere of our latest documentary entitled Because of the War.
About Because of the War: In Philadelphia, four Liberian women, Tokay, Zaye, Marie and Fatu, use their music to address injustice and inspire action for social change. They are accomplished, brilliant singers – women, refugees, immigrants, Africans – who haven’t stopped contributing positively to the world, no matter the obstacles. Because of the War documents the power of traditional songs to make meaningful connections between and among people, and to re-build communities. The film was produced by the Philadelphia Folklore Project and Directed by Toni Shapiro-Phim.
