April 5, 2014 1:00-4:00 PM "Drums Around The World" Percussion Party at Penn Museum

Saturday, April 5, 1:00 - 4:00 pm
World Culture Afternoon
Drums around the World

This percussion party takes guests on a musical journey from Africa to Brazil, to Ireland, the Middle East, and Native American beats, all in one afternoon. A limited number of drums are provided, and visitors are welcome to bring their own drums to the Penn Museum for the workshops—and a grand finale drum circle performance to close the afternoon in a medley of drums, cultures, and goodwill. Family crafts and a self-guided tour of instruments on display throughout the Penn Museum round out the day.
As part of the day's musical theme, guests can take a self-guided tour of instruments on display throughout the Penn Museum, including:

an mbira (finger piano) from the Shona people of Southern Africa and Zimbabwe in the Africa Gallery
a ceramic flute played by the Aztecs of Central Mexico ca. 1200–1500 CE in the Mexico and Central America Gallery
the famous Bull-Headed Lyre front piece within the exhibition Iraq's Ancient Past: Rediscovering Ur's Royal Cemetery
a wooden Elk flute created by the Dakota people of the Great Plains ca. 1880 on display in the Penn Museum's newest exhibition, Native American Voices—The People Here and Now.
The day's lineup also includes international musical crafts that enable families to take their favorite rhythms home.

Samba music has long been a symbol of Brazilian culture and Carnival. At 1:00 pm, Alex Shaw, arts educator, and Director of the Philadelphia-based Brazilian band Alô Brasil, leads guests through the foundations of samba and samba-reggae rhythms.

Lenny Seidman of the Spoken Hand Percussion Orchestra leads a tabla workshop at 1:30 pm. The tabla consists of a pair of hand drums, and is a common accompaniment for Indian folk music.

At 2:00 pm, ODUNDE365 percussion instructor Saeed Samad presents the djembe drum from West Africa, and demonstrates rhythms and techniques for guests to follow. ODUNDE 365 is an initiative that expands the signature ODUNDE festival into yearlong cultural programming and events.

The bodhrán is an open-ended Irish frame drum. By placing one hand inside the drum head, a musician can control the drum's pitch. At 2:30 pm, bodhrán instructor and award-winning musician Dave Hanson teaches guests how to achieve the sound they want from the instrument.

Joe Tayoun, internationally acclaimed Middle Eastern percussionist, and creator of an instructional Middle Eastern music app, leads a drum circle at 3:00 pm. A musician since childhood, his range includes Arabic, Turkish, Greek, Armenian, and Israeli music.

Vaughnda Hilton, Founder and Director of the Native Nations Dance Theater, explains the meaning behind the drum, different rhythms, and singing various Native American songs. Guests can practice rhythms from different nations, including Ms. Hilton's Blackfeet, Seminole, and Creek heritage.

At 3:45 pm, visitors gather for a spectacular drum circle finale, closing the afternoon in a medley of drums, cultures, and goodwill.

Co-sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania's 2013-2014 Year of Sound. Free with Museum admission.

From AfroTaino Productions Newsletter:"It seems like yesterday that we watched, from the stage wings, a very special moment happen as Luisa Maita sang ‘Fulaninha’ live, under the Kimmel Center’s stage lights. The audience started to shimmy their shoulders, close their eyes, and smile really hard. We knew there was something about this gentle Brazilian girl and her silky voice. Two years later, we are eager to see that effect sweep over the Fleisher audience. Serving as Part Three of a continuing series of global music concerts between AfroTaino Productions & Fleisher Art Memorial, this edition brings the incredible Sao Paulo-based singer Luisa Maita back to Philadelphia, as part of her current US tour. Sultry, seductive and infused with that inimitable samba swing, Maita’s music embodies the modern spirit of Brazil. Her songs reflect influences from alternative pop and downtempo electronic music melded with an acoustic foundation deeply rooted in samba, bossa nova, and MPB (Brazilian Pop Music). This up-close & personal concert will be a one-of-a-kind experience!"

March 27, 2014 9:00 PM Red Baraat at Underground Arts

Red Baraat
Formed in 2008, Red Baraat is a pioneering eight-piece band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound -- a merging of hard driving North Indian bhangra rhythms with elements of jazz, go-go, brass funk, and hip-hop. Created with no less a purposeful agenda than manifesting joy and unity in all people, Red Baraat’s spirit is worn brightly on its sweaty and hard-worked sleeve. And is being returned to them in cities all over the world, as word spreads of the band’s incredibly powerful live performances.

March 26, 2014 8:00 PM Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra at Lafayette College

Grammy winner Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra return to Lafayette College for a performance 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26 at the Williams Center for the Arts.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at or by calling the box office at (610) 330-5009 from noon to 2 p.m., and 4 to 5 p.m. on weekdays, plus one hour before the performance.

In its two previous Williams Center performances, the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra saluted the great big band traditions of Cuba and its enduring musical influences throughout contemporary jazz. Bandleader and pianist Arturo O’Farrill formed ALJO in 2002 to preserve the treasure trove of charts and arrangements from the past, while pioneering new music and fresh compositions by today’s top musical talents.

This impeccable repertory and exemplary big band musicianship have garnered Arturo and the ALJO a slew of awards, including his 2006 Grammy for A Song for Chico, in tribute to legendary bandleader—and his father—Chico O’Farrill. Critical accolades and audience fervor greet the band wherever it is heard.

March 22, 2014 8:00-11:00 PM Rumba with Las Gallas featuring DJ Rahsaan at West Kensington Ministries

Saturday March 22, 2014 ; 8PM – 11PM ; $10 Tickets
West Kensington Ministries
2140 North Hancock Street
(Corner of Susquehanna Avenue in Norris Square)
From AfroTaino Productions Newsletter: "A few weeks ago, dozens of arts & culture heads and aficionados gathered under one roof to raise funds for Philadelphia’s leading all-Latina performance arts collective, Las Gallas, and their upcoming trip to Cuba. The renowned troupe has been invited to participate in a major poetry festival in Havana, and we all want to see this dream accomplished. The night was a bohemian smorgasbord: live performances by renowned artists like Arturo Stable, Sonia Sanchez, Pablo Batista & more kept us bubbling with warmth all night. Because they still have a way to go to reach their financial goal, Las Gallas are hosting a Part 2 fundraising event…and it’s a dance party! So that means, if you missed the first event, or if you went and didn’t get a chance to shake it a bit, now’s your chance to join the dance. Our very own DJ Rahsaan (of AfroTaino Productions) will keep you moving with his Afro-Latin global funk grooves. Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of this effort. Bring your dancing shoes – because this is a RUMBA!"
