June 25 "Matuto" at World Cafe Live 9 pm Upstairs

Matuto
Imagine the sound of a Brazilian Carnaval in the Appalachian Mountains. A sound where exotic percussion instruments rumble beneath blues drenched vocals, telecaster twangs, accordion acrobatics, and folksy fiddle tunes. Now, imagine these sounds in the hands of some of NYC's finest young improvisers as they light up club and festival stages worldwide. Through the unorthodox blend of Brazilian Percussion and American Bluegrass, Matuto has created an organic, animated sound all its own. June 12 4:30 and 7:30 PM "The Spirits Break to Freedom" from Philadelphia Folklore Project

June 12, 4:30 and 7:30 PM
THE SPIRITS BREAK TO FREEDOM
Christ Church Neighborhood House
20 N. American Street, Phila. PA

If you saw its beginnings at PFP last year, you will want to preview the latest version of the ongoing creation of dancer/choreographer Germaine Ingram, composer/musician Bobby Zankel, and visual artist John Dowell to commemorate the nine African Americans enslaved by President George Washington in the President's House, the first American "white house" that stood on a site just steps away from where the Liberty Bell is currently on display. Jazz tap/percussive dance, projected art work, and original instrumental music and song are the artists' tools for wrestling with the irony of human bondage practiced in Philadelphia - the "cradle of liberty - by the revered leader of a new nation founded on the promise of free-dom. Giving voice to the identities, feelings and aspirations of the Nine - whose existence was buried and forgotten for centuries - an ensemble of 10 dancers, musicians, and vocalists wrestle with slavery's enduring legacy, and explore the power of tradition and culture to sustain hope and resist oppression.
Tickets $20 are available online at www.jazzbridge.org/products-page or by calling 215-517-8337. Seating is very limited. For info call: 215-517-8337

June 12 Odunde Festival

June 10-12, 2011: One of the largest and most longstanding African-American street festivals in the nation The Odunde Street Festival and African Marketplace The Odunde Street Festival and African Marketplace Credit: by G. Widman for GPTMC Description Date: June 10 – 12, 2011 Take in the sights, sounds and smells: the rhythmic, thumping beat of the drums, the colorful, never-ending array of African textiles and crafts mix, and the tantalizing smell of African spices cooking on an outdoor grill. The annual Odunde Street Festival, held every second Sunday in June, brings a genuine taste of Africa to South Street and one of Philadelphia’s oldest, historically African-American neighborhoods. The festival begins with a procession to the Schuylkill River, where prayers are offered and blessings bestowed. The procession then returns to 23rd and South Streets for the start of the street festival. This year, as the landmark festival enters its fourth decade, it becomes a three-day abundance of cultural, historical and family-friendly events. Visit the website for more information. Odunde is the creation of its South Philadelphia founder, Lois Fernandez, who launched the festival after visiting similar celebrations in Africa. The concept originates from the Yoruba people of Nigeria, West Africa, and celebrates the coming of another year for African-Americans and Africanized people around the world. ODUNDE, Inc. is an educational and cultural organization that sponsors year-round programs featuring the African Diaspora as well as the annual Odunde Festival. Traditionally, the festival draws 22 percent of its visitors from outside the Philadelphia region. COME PREPARED Festival streets will be closed to traffic and parking, so consider taking public transportation. DON’T MISS Odunde’s authentic African Marketplace features vendors from around the world, including the Caribbean and Brazil. Outsider Tip Odunde is a Yoruba word that means “Happy New Year.” Every year, Odunde draws vendors from not only America but from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, and Guinea. The Festival is almost like a large family reunion. And the aromas of Africa, the Caribbean and beyond fill the air.

June 11 8pm Soweto Kinch Quartet at The Painted Bride Art Center

An award-winning saxophonist-composer, a highly-respected poet-rapper-mc, Soweto Kinch is the quintessential bridge between planets be-bop and hip-hop. Hailing from the UK, Soweto debuts Philly with his quartet to perform new works from his latest critically acclaimed project. Before its US release, WITNESS this world-class rising star perform The New Emancipation live and direct from the Bride!

Femi Temowo (guitar)
Karl Rasheed-Abel (bass)
Graham Godfrey (drums)

“The New Emancipation” draws its inspiration from 19th century work songs and early blues, exploring the modern resonances of the emancipation story. From debt/wage slavery, to creative oppression in the music industry and ideas of race in a post-Obama age it combines this rich musical inheritance and revisits it with stellar jazz ensemble and modern hip hop production.

The album features an prestigious international lineup, including Byron Wallen, Justin Brown (US), Eska Mtungwazi, Femi Temowo, Shabaka Hutchings and Harry Brown among others.

Citing influences as divergent as Duke Ellington, Madlib and Frederick Delius, it plants the power and significance of the blues firmly with modern realities. The piece is both an ode and polemic in Kinch’s words it sets out to ‘challenge the comfort and complacency of our modern world, when the same conditions that enslaved and emmiserated people 150 years ago are still powerfully in effect today. Yet above all its about celebrating the endurance and resilience of the human spirit.’

A must see eye opener and inspirational film. Event includes a "Meet the Artist" visit with Brazilian sustainable wearable artist Wanner Oliveira Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker (DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT and COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) and co-directors João Jardim and Karen Harley have great access to the entire process and, in the end, offer stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.
