June 1 & 2, 2019 6:00 & 8:00PM Sanchel Brown's "Home to Homeland" at Community Education Center

From Baltimore to Senegal, Sanchel Brown’s new evening length dance journey is a reminder that home is always beneath the feet.

“...from solo to unison, abstract to representational movement, movement to rhyme, rhyme to
song, song to improvisational dance to getting audience members to join in a virtuosic twerk-session—fill me with a formalist’s joy...She asks us in the talkback after the show: “Did you feel like you went somewhere?” Yes,” we yell back, grateful for the journey and the artist guides who brought us through.”
-Miryiam Coppersmith ThINKing Dance

Philadelphia, PA - In Home to Homeland, choreographer Sanchel Brown, dances, sings, raps, and raises an eyebrow as she travels from 1920’s Harlem to contemporary day time television.

Brown weaves common yet diverse movement languages of footwork, as she invites us to follow her footprints towards the meaning of Motherland. Home to Homeland includes stopssmack dab in the middle of a New Orleans second line as well as the Baltimore of Brown’s childhood.

Bakosó Philadelphia Premiere with Q&A from director Eli Jacobs-Fantauzzi and Dj Jigüe from Cuba

What does “Está Rico” by Marc Anthony, Will Smith & Bad Bunny have in common with “Made For Now” by Janet Jackson x Daddy Yankee? They both high-jacked AfroBeats and did not give the genre’s origin props. Bakosó is a film that does the opposite, following DJ Jigüe on a journey to his hometown of Santiago de Cuba as he explores Cuba’s manifestation of the global AfroBeats hype, “bakosó”, to discover where the roots of the genre come from. We know there is deep-rooted African influence in Cuba, but bakosó itself is beautiful proof that the exchange did not end with the Transatlantic slave trade.

May 19, 2019 7:00PM Maceo Parker at Ardmore Music Hall

Maceo Parker (Saxophonist for James Brown & P-Funk)
Maceo Parker: his name is synonymous with Funky Music, his pedigree impeccable; his band: the tightest little funk orchestra on earth.

Everyone knows by now that he's played with each and every leader of funk, his start with James Brown, which Maceo describes as " like being at University "; jumping aboard the Mothership with George Clinton; stretching out with Bootsy's Rubber Band. He's the living, breathing pulse that connects the history of Funk in one golden thread;the cipher that unravels dance music down to its core.
