June 25 and 26, 2016 Pablo Batista presents El Viaje (The Journey) at Temple University Performing Arts Center

Pablo Batista's El Viaje (The Journey)
On June 25 and 26, 2016 percussionist Pablo Batista will lead the premiere performance of El Viaje (The Journey), an extended work in music, dance, sound and light. El Viaje tells the story of forced emigration from Africa to the Americas, and how spiritual and cultural resilience ultimately enabled slaves to adapt and re-establish themselves with dignity in diaspora.

Combining Afro-Cuban bata drumming and chant with elements from European classical, jazz and blues, R & B, funk and salsa, El Viaje reflects the journey of captive African cultures as they were blended and transformed in into Afro-Caribbean culture over five centuries.

It also reflects Batista's lifelong study of Afro-Cuban drumming, and 30 years of touring -- including 9 years with Grover Washington Jr. -- and 12 years with Alicia Keys -- and session work on Grammy winning recordings in jazz, rhythm and blues and gospel,

Phillys drummer to the stars comes home to tell his ancestral story, our story, everybodys story in an uplifting and unforgettable mix of Afro-Caribbean music, dance, light and imagery.

Says Batista: "The Journey a story rooted in my own family coming to Pennsylvania from Puerto Rico as immigrants in search of work. But it also speaks to others because migration under duress has been the arc of experience for so many different ethnic groups all over the world: Irish, Chinese, Italian, Jewish, Latino, Vietnamese, Arab. Look at the news, and it's true even moreso today."

July 19, 2016 8:00PM Monsieur Periné at World Cafe Live PHL

Monsieur Periné is one of the leading bands in Colombia's thriving new music scene. The group
won a Latin GRAMMY award for "Best New Artist" in 2015. Their latest album Caja de Musica
was produced by Eduardo Cabra, aka Visitante from the groundbreaking Puerto Rican group
Calle 13.The album also features vocal guests like Ruben Albarran from Mexican rock
legends Cafe Tacuba and Dominican star Vicente Garcia.
Rooted in gypsy jazz music and celebrating Django Reinhardt, Monsieur Periné's fresh style
adds a variety of Latin elements to the mix. While incorporating genres like cumbia, son, bolero,
tango and samba, the band performs traditional South American instruments like the charango,
bandoneon and Latin percussion.
Monsieur Periné's airy yet virtuosic instrumental foundation connects 1930s Paris with the
youthful spirit of modern Bogota. It is the perfect backdrop to showcase Catalina Garcia's sugarsweet,
sunshiny vocals at the very center of their signature "swing a la Colombiana" style. With
the help of the illustrator Jose Arboleda and their own fashion designer, the band has created a
world of their own, that comes to life in their music, their artwork and of course their
performances.
"What's amazing is that Monsieur Perine isn't just some obscure jazz-school nerdery. They've
made big strides, earning radio play and marquee billing at major music festivals. In part, that's
because they balance their high-concept musical fusions with a spot-on pop sensibility." -MTV
"Monsieur Perine surprised us this year, flipping the script with music inspired by French jazz,
swing, and Colombian folk." -LA Weekly
"The sextet's bouncy and joyous brand of Colombian swing captivated the crowd... It was easy to
see why Monsieur Perine is such a smash in South America." –Creative Loafing (North Carolina)
