December 2, 2014 8:00 PM Twin Danger with Ensemble Novo at World Cafe Live PHL

Twin Danger

Twin Danger is the love child of heroin jazz and seductive darkness. Vanessa Bley and Stuart Matthewman. Two hearts beating as one; risk takers with an appetite for the unknown.

The daughter of famed jazz pianist Paul Bley, Vanessa is a singer, composer, guitarist and pianist. Her voice is as fragile as it is pure, however she best lives the meaning of Twin Danger. While not crooning along side Matthewman, she plays with her psychedelic pop-rock outfit Beast Patrol, who just released their second record.

Stuart plays guitar, for sure, but his tenor sax is what gets under your skin. As core member of Sade, this makes sense. Together, Bley and Matthewman make music that is sleek, sexy, and sultry. Jazz-swing meets heartbreak-pop; cinematic blues for the modern romantic. The musical union of Vanessa and Stuart is a natural one. “We talked about music,” Stuart recalls. “I said I’d written these chords with a dissonance that I liked, but that I didn’t know what to do with.” A few hours later, Vanessa sent Stuart a finished song. “It was as simple as that,” Stuart says, smiling.

Ensemble Novo is the brainchild of Tom Moon, the best-selling author and former Philadelphia Inquirer music critic who currently contributes to NPR’s “All Things Considered.” Inspired by the music of Brazil, the group creates a spacious, welcoming sound.

This event is 21+

Beats, Brews, & Banter is a free monthly event that gives local drummers, musicians, and wannabes a chance to network, share ideas, and learn from some of the best drummers in the area.

This month's featured guest, Christopher Sean Powell (aka Pow Pow, aka Pay Pow, aka Powserati) is a self-taught rhythm scholar, producer, and beat-maker living in Philadelphia, PA. As a main contributor in the Philadelphia art and sound collective Need New Body, which fused improvisation with popular song structures, Powell began a career of international recording and performance, creating music at the nexus of art and entertainment. Since 1999, he has collaborated, recorded, and toured worldwide with a diverse spectrum of artists and musicians, including the Sun Ra Arkestra, Yoko Ono, and the Boredoms. Powell’s work in the eclectic and high energy Philadelphia band Man Man (ANTI- Records) has helped focus his talent as a leader in the live performance context. Together with Griffin Rodriguez, Powell explores popular music based on jazz and non-Western rhythms as the Los Angeles production duo Icy Demons. His latest projects include Adventuredrum, a conceptually-based performance Powell composes for an ensemble of drummers, Spaceship Aloha, a solo project mixing Polynesian-infused beats in an electronic soundscape, GRANT$, a hip hop duo with artist Tim Fite, and Mash Up Body, a collaboration with avant-garde choreographer Kate Watson-Wallace.

Philly Drum Project is a percussive collective dedicated to making drumming more accessible by helping drummers in the Philadelphia area share gear, lessons, and beats. Beats, Brews, & Banter is held on the first Monday of every month and has featured such drummers as Eric Slick (Dr. Dog), Spanky McCurdy (Jill Scott, Lady Gaga), and Fred Berman (Amos Lee).

November 23, 2014 7:30 PM Aurelio Martinez : Garifuna Music from Honduras at The Rotunda

Born in the tiny coastal hamlet of Plaplaya on Honduras’ Caribbean coast, Aurelio Martinez grew up steeped in the Garifuna traditions of his ancestors, a group of shipwrecked slaves who intermarried with the indigenous people of the island of St. Vincent, only to be deported to the Central American coast in the late eighteenth century.
Now both a leading Garifuna musician and a member of the Honduran Congress, Aurelio recalls his humble but highly musical beginnings in his remote hometown. “In the village I was born, there is still no electricity,” he told Afropop Worldwide in a 2006 interview. “When I was a child, I had very natural toys. My first toy was a guitar I built for myself from wood taken from a fishing rod. So that’s how I played my first chords.” He learned these chords from his family, including his father, a well-loved local troubadour who improvised playful paranda songs that embrace Garifuna roots and Latin sounds. He became a drummer almost as soon as he began to walk, thanks to his uncles and grandfather. From his vocally talented mother, he learned to sing and picked up many songs she crafted.
A prodigy of percussion, Aurelio began performing at Garifuna ceremonies when just a boy, even at the most sacred events where children were usually not allowed. By the time he left Plaplaya to attend school at 14, he was a respected musician with a firm grounding in Garifuna rhythms, rituals, and songs. As a student in the provincial capital of La Cieba, he dove into diverse and innovative musical projects that took him outside the traditional sphere of performance. He played professionally with popular Latin ensembles, wrote music for theater and pop groups, and refined his musical skills with private teachers.
He soon founded a Garifuna ensemble, Lita Ariran, one of the first Garifuna groups to appear on an internationally distributed recording. Aurelio’s virtuosic musicianship and passionate performances made him a mainstay of the La Cieba music scene, where he was best loved for his take on punta rock, the high-energy, Garifuna roots-infused pop genre that took Central America by storm in the 1990s.
His musical career took a global turn thanks to his Belizean friend and fellow musician Andy Palacio, who organized a major Garifuna festival and invited Aurelio. The two artists struck up a decades-long friendship thanks in part to their shared hopes for the future of Garifuna music and culture. Through Palacio, Aurelio met Ivan Duran, the tireless producer behind Belize’s Stonetree Records, and participated in a compilation of paranda, the Latin-inspired genre his father had favored, a style that was slowly dying out among the Garifuna. The comparatively youthful Aurelio, youngest of the three generations on the recording, proved that the music was still alive and kicking.
With Duran, Aurelio began thinking about the evolution of the music he had grown up with, and his first solo album Garifuna Soul (2004) explored his roots in both paranda and traditional rhythms. Martinez’s richly resonant voice and soulful acoustic songs caught the attention of the global music press and put Martinez on the map as a tradition-bearer with an innate musicality and subtle innovative streak.

In recognition of Black Consciousness Day in Brazil, this program will pay special homage to the musical tradition of Capoeira Angola, an ancient Afro-Brazilian martial art with an enduring legacy of social justice and cultural resistance. Interactive video projections of vintage capoeira footage and other Afro-Brazilian cultural images will also be interwoven throughout the program to include another dimension of context and artistry.

The ensemble will feature some of the region's most respected musicians, including Alex Shaw - vocals, percussion; Patricio Acevedo - guitar, cavaquinho; Luke O'Reilly - keys; Mike Boone - bass; Jeremiah Shaw - cello; Tim Thompson - trumpet; Ernest Stuart - trombone; Zé Mauricio - percussion; Fernando Saci - percussion; Rucyl Mills - video artist.

A small ensemble of students from FACTS Charter School in Chinatown, Philadelphia, will join this performance as a culmination of an eight-week arts residency with Alex Shaw. Dr. Ken Dossar will also be present to provide some opening remarks about the legacy of Capoeira Angola.

Intercultural Journeys is a non-profit organization with a mission of promoting peace and cultural dialogue through music and other arts programming. Alex Shaw has recently become curator for Intercultural Journeys. You can like the Intercultural Journeys FB page here, and/or you can join the IJ event on Facebook here.

November 16, 2014 7:30 PM Crossroads Concerts Presents Corey Harris at The Rotunda

As a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and band leader, Corey Harris is both a leading voice of the generation of acoustic blues musicians that came of age in the 1990s and an innovative composer exploring the connections between blues and other musics of Africa and the African diaspora. He has recorded many traditional classic while creating an original vision of the blues by adding influences from reggae, soul, rock and West African music. Some of his imaginative compositions are marked by a deliberate eclecticism; other works stay true to the traditional blues formula of compelling vocals and down-home guitar. With one foot in tradition and the other in contemporary experimentation, Harris is a truly unique voice in contemporary music.
Harris began his career as a street musician in New Orleans and travelled throughout the southern US playing music. In his early twenties he spent a year in Cameroon, which has had a profound effect on his later work. He has recorded fourteen albums and worked with BB King, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, R.L.Burnside, Ali Farka Toure, Tracy Chapman, Olu Dara, Wilco, and others. In 2003 Harris was a featured artist and narrator of the Martin Scorcese film, “Feel Like Going Home,” which traced the evolution of blues from West Africa to the southern U.S. In 2007, he was awarded a “genius award” by the MacArthur Foundation in recognition of his adventurous path marked by deliberate eclecticism.” That same year, he was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree by Bates College, his undergraduate alma mater.
