Join sisters-in-law Madhusmita Bora and Prerona Bhuyan of Sattriya Dance Company as they weave together the personal and the mythological into an entirely new tale. This powerful evening of live music, movement, and images draw from Sattriya, a living dance tradition that originates from the Hindu (Vaishnav) monasteries of Assam, Northeast India that are now threatened by rising river waters. Allens Lane Art Center is thrilled to present Solo Solito iMPeRFeCT @Allens Lane Art Center, a night of celebration of an amazing community arts organization, and their fierce leaders, Renny Molenaar and Rocio Cabello. Founded in 2012, the iMPeRFeCT Gallery was established in Germantown with the “intention and hope of becoming a voice in the community and in the ongoing conversation with the art world.”


Honoring the long-standing tradition of providing space for local artists to put on their own solo exhibitions, Renny and Rocio, are curating a unique experience centering solo performances by four outstanding musicians and a dancer in Allens Lane historic Café Theater. Performing at the event are Raji Malik, Dende Macedo, Jamie Merwin, Rumi Kitchen, and Bethlehem The Vocassionist. To top it all off, Renny and Rocio will be preparing a special meal, Mu will provide sweets, and we’ll be serving Young American Cider and Mojitos!  All proceeds will go directly to supporting the operations of iMPeRFeCT Gallery.

April 23, 2024 7:00PM Not So Latin Concerts: Tomas Rodriguez and Jake Kelberman

 

Tomas Rodriguez explores the origins of the Spanish guitar in Africa, briefly touching upon 16th-century vihuela music and early flamenco guitar compositions. As these root traditions combine with African, Indigenous, and European musical influences in the Americas, a fresh framework for solo guitar emerges. The program highlights compositions from Brazil, Cuba, and Venezuela, showcasing new rhythmic and harmonic textures, along with Rodriguez’s personal interpretation of this evolution through his original solo guitar compositions.

Led by the exceptionally talented pianist and arranger Suzette Ortiz, the AMLA All-Stars 2024 ensemble brings together a dynamic lineup of musicians collaborating with AMLA’s esteemed music education program. Odean grew up in jazz rich territory with other Philadelphia notables such as: John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Benny Golson, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy and Percy Heath, Ray Bryant, Bill Barron, Kenny Barron, Archie Shepp, Jymie Merritt, Jimmy Garrison, Philly Joe Jones and Dizzy Gillespie. Coltrane chose Odean to replace him in Jimmy Smith’s Group when he left for New York to join Miles Davis. Although he was close to Coltrane and continues to revere his artistry, Odean was always searching for his own musical sound. 


Reggie Workman (born June 26, 1937 in Philadelphia) is recognized as one of the most technically gifted American avant-garde jazz and hard bop double bassists in history. He is a teacher, composer, and jazz advocate whose style ranges from Bob, Post Bop and beyond.
