August 3, 2015 7:00-9:00 PM Philly Drum Project's "Beats, Brews, and Banter" with Carl Bahner at Boot and Saddle

Beats, Brews, & Banter is a free monthly event that gives local drummers, musicians, and wannabes a chance to network, share ideas, and learn from some of the best drummers in the area. Our guest this month is drummer and producer, Carl Bahner.

Before gaining international buzz with Philly pop band CHEERLEADER, Carl Bahner has been teaching, recording and performing across the northeast for almost a decade. His musicality and "song before drums" approach has led him to collaborations with artists like Wild Party, Sean Hoots, Julie Slick, John Faye, Eric Slick, Ron Gallo and Markus Reuter.

Philly Drum Project is a percussive collective dedicated to making drumming more accessible by helping drummers in the Philadelphia area share gear, lessons, and beats. Beats, Brews, & Banter is held once a month and has featured such drummers as Eric Slick (Dr. Dog), Spanky McCurdy (Jill Scott, Lady Gaga), and Fred Berman (Amos Lee). and
Another Holiday For Skins
w/ Pablo Batista, Luke Carlos O'Reilly and others

Friday, July 31st, at 7:30pm
Hailing from Bahia, Brazil, the percussion and woodwinds big band, Letieres Leite & Orkestra Rumpilezz embark on their very first U.S. tour debuting Friday, July 31, 2015, in Philadelphia. They are joined by Afro-Cuban Jazz pianist and bandleader Arturo O’Farrill, trumpeter and musical adventurer, Steven Bernstein.

Letieres Leite & Orkestra Rumpilezz weds rhythmic Afro-Bahian roots to Jazz harmonization. In 2006, saxophonist, composer and bandleader, Letieres Leite founded Rumpilezz. The sound is "governed" by the rigor of African-Bahian percussion and marked by the influence of jazz. One might say that Orkestra is a "break in the barriers of Brazilian instrumental music.”

The opening act for the evening will be the Philly-based, Art Blakey-inspired percussion ensemble, Another Holiday For Skins with Pablo Batista, Luke Carlos O'Reilly, Mike Boone and others. Another Holiday For Skins performed in February at the International House to a sold out crowd featuring an all star ensemble of Philadelphia drummers, percussionists and other musicians.

This event is produced through a collaboration between Phila Jazz Project & WRTI.

Philadelphia Jazz Project is a sponsored project of the Painted Bride Art Center, with funding provided by The Wyncote Foundation.

July 31, 2015 5:00-8:45 PM Jarana Beat at Art After Five at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

For Over four years Jarana Beat has been offering us a journey through Afro-Amerindian culture by fusing Mexican music and dance with international rhythms. With its beginnings at NYU’S Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics Encuentro in Argentina in 2007, Jarana Beat’s music has been offering an interesting mix, thanks to its solid foundation and deep roots. Add to that contagious charm and good vibes, and there is no way you’ll be able to resist getting up and dancing to their tunes. Together with director Sinuhé Padilla-Isunza, the band is composed of professional immigrant musicians from Mexico, and they interact with performers from all over the world, including dancers dressed in traditional costumes who interweave percussive footwork with the music of regional rhythms such as son jarocho, son guerrerense, son huasteco, mexika, and norteña, among others. As a family, they have become masters at blending Mexican and Latin American folk instruments and rhythmic elements that create an environment for expressing the unique music of their homelands.

July 17, 2015 5:00-8:45 PM Papo Gely and TIMBALONA at Art After Five at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Art After Five
From Afrotaino Productions' Newsletter:

"GUITARIST/COMPOSER PAPO GELY WARMS UP YOUR WEEKEND!
“Yo prefiero ver el mundo a través de mis gafas oscuras” translates to “I prefer to see the world from behind my dark sunglasses”. These lyrics, once belted by a young latin star named Ricky Martin, supported by his bandmates in the Latin power-pop machine called MENUDO. The writer/producer of that song, Papo Gely, then generating pop melodies for mass consumption, has seen the heights of stardom and more. Instead of staying on the sweet, saccharin-ized road of pop music, Gely gathered some of his best musical friends and formed Blues Montuno, a project that served as the template for what can now be referred to as the Papo Gely sound.

That sonic combination consists of lofty, suave guitar strums & soothing melodies that go hand-in-hand with hammocks, sunsets, and ocean views; poignant, romantic lyrics bobbing in rhythm like waves against a boat; and his guitar sings through the speakers, ascending notes like a bird in flight. His trademark ‘rock-n-rumba’ sound is what keeps the audiences smiling, moving, and loving. If you come to the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Friday July 17th, the ongoing Art After 5 series is inviting you all the feel the tropical energy of Papo Gely & band. We suggest you do it. No dark sunglasses required."

July 14, 2015 7:00 PM Scribe Video film screening of " Mary Lou Williams: The Lady Who Swings the Band" and performance by Kendrah Butler

"Mary Lou Williams: The Lady Who Swings the Band" is a documentary about the life and music of one of the greatest jazz pianists, composers and arrangers. However, away from the piano, Williams was a woman in a "man's world", a black person in a "whites only" society, and an ambitious artist who struggled against the imperatives of being a "star". The screening will be preceded by a piano solo from Kendrah Butler in honor of Mary Lou Williams.

July 12, 2015 7:30 PM Latin Roots LIve! presents NuevoFest at the Trocadero Theatre

On the heels of the upcoming Latin American Music Conference (LAMC) in New York City, WXPN’s Latin Roots and Afrotaino present Nuevofest, a multi-artist showcase celebrating the new sounds of Latin America. The event is free and will be held at the Trocadero on Sunday, July 12.

This year’s Nuevofest lineup has musical roots extending to Venezuela, Mexico, Dominican Republic and more. Bands scheduled to perform are Southern California-based art-core band iAparato!, El Salvador Ska band Adhesivo, Latin Rock fusion band Zakke, ex-lead singer of Venezuelan rock band Viniloversus-turned-solo act Rodrigo Solo, Dominican rap duo Agudos Clef, the Monterrey, Mexico party starters Mexican Dubweiser, and the tropical bass beats of DJ Precolumbian.

Latin Roots Live! is inspired by the bi-weekly World Cafe® radio series Latin Roots in which Dye explores a variety of music from Spanish-speaking countries and people, from cumbia, mambo and son to Latin rock, reggaeton, and more. The first show in the series was a free concert with Chilean/French GRAMMY-winning vocalist Ana Tijoux in April 2015. The Latin Roots Live! is made possible through a grant by the William Penn Foundation.

Now in its third year, the Nuevofest has previously featured unknown indie acts like torch singer Irene Diaz, the Goth-Cumbia band Minitk del Miedo, and Peruvian reggae & dub band Laguna Pai.
