March 2, 2018 6:00-8:30PM Hegazy at The Barnes Foundation

Tonight’s performance features the vocal harmonies of Hegazy, the brainchild of twin sisters and singer-songwriters Leila and Omnia Hegazy. The twins bring a unique blend of driving guitars, smoky keyboards, and infectious pop melodies.

Raised in Staten Island, New York, Leila and Omnia Hegazy began writing music together at age 11. As teens and adults, they pursued separate careers in music, with Leila focusing on R&B and Omnia on pop-rock. The sisters reunited in 2012 and began collaborating again, cultivating a fresh sound that blends the genres. Hegazy’s first EP, Young, will be released in February.

March 2, 2018 9:15PM AfroTaino Productions + Johnny Brenda's Present Combo Chimbita

Combo Chimbita - (Set time: 10:30 PM)
Rooted in Colombia and based in New York, Combo Chimbita lives in the future. After playing together for years, these first-generation New Yorkers—powerhouse vocalist Carolina Oliveros, synth and bassist Prince of Queens, guitarist Niño Lento, and drummer Dilemastronauta—began experimenting with different traditional musical styles during their late night residencies at Barbès in Brooklyn. Exploring the connections between visual identity and improvisational long-form trips, Combo Chimbita came together as a four-piece band after they started encouraging more vocals by Carolina Oliveros, who tightens the rhythm with her guacharaca. Although their backgrounds are in heavy rock, metal, and psychedelic funk and soul, they gleefully fuse elements from cumbia, 70s funaná from Cape Verde, kompa from Haiti as well as salsa & reggae, mixing the Guacharaca and futuristic-yet-retro synth sounds.

Rockers Galore - (Set time: 9:15 PM)
It’s a fresh and fist-pumping sound growing out of the wreckage of dilapidated tenements and washed-out pasts, intercut with jazz-infleunces like Buddy Rich and Wynton Marsalis – but this Philly maestro doesn’t pull any punches with an assertive brass-section chiming the air behind him, and introducing a strong hip-hop flavour to his lyrics.

DJ Rahsaan
NYC-born/Philly-based Producer & DJ Rahsaan has been on the forefront of the 'world beat' industry for over 20 years. Rahsaan's sets consist of dancefloor-ready international grooves and pulsing tropical rhythms. Whether it's designing soundscapes for art exhibitions or New York Fashion Week, or sharing the stage with global acts like Calle 13, Bomba Estereo, Manu Chao, and the Gipsy Kings: the people know Rahsaan elevates the energy through music.

JOHN VANORE & Abstract Truth

John Vanore presents this uniquely instrumented large ensemble where the soloist is prominent, if not dominant. The ensemble draws on the traditions of the big band, but neither limited by nor imitating it.
The instrumentation creates a palette of color shared by none! Essentially structured as a jazz group plus! …4 trumpets, 2 trombones, and 2 French horns, 2 saxophones… provide additional color doubling on flutes and bass clarinet.
Orchestration takes on a character that goes from intimacy of a small group to the full explosive power of a big band.

February 18, 2018 8:00-11:30PM Los Amigos Invisibles at The Foundry at The Fillmore

Since their first album in 1995, Los Amigos Invisibles have developed a sound based in the gozadera, an irresistible fusion of Latin rhythms with fiery funk and lounge music. The band got their first break when David Byrne (Talking Heads) discovered one of their albums by chance in a Manhattan record shop. He immediately called the band up in their native Venezuela and soon after, signed them to his label, Luaka Bop. Byrne opened doors for the band across the globe and Los Amigos Invisibles soon became an international touring machine.

Los Amigos Invisibles moved to New York City from their hometown of Caracas in 2001 and entrenched itself in the local scene. “From a musician’s perspective, being in New York exposes you to every kind of music that you can think of,” Pardo says. “It has been a great place to get inspired and to make our shows tighter. On the other hand, being away from Venezuela makes you realize what you had sometimes taken for granted.”

With their electrifying live show, the group began building a considerable fan-base across the U.S. Collaborating with artists from Louie Vega (Masters At Work) to Dimitri From Paris, Los Amigos were able to establish themselves in the dance music scene and expand their sound. While raking in Grammy nominations year after year and performing on programs like the Jimmy Kimmel Show, the group continued to establish themselves.

February 10, 2018 7:30-11:00PM "Who's Lovin' You?": A York Street Hustle Valentine's Extravaganza

“Who’s Lovin’ You: A York Street Hustle Valentine’s Extravaganza”

The York Street Hustle
Join Philly's premiere '60s Soul band, The York Street Hustle for their SECOND Valentine's Event!

They've got all of your favorite LOVE songs as well as all the sassy-I-don't-need-you-no-more songs too. They're gonna go from early sixties to late. From Chicago to Northern Soul and everything in between. They'll even debut some new repertoire for you!

Please join us for an amazing dance party just after the new year!

Bring your beloved! Bring your best friends! Bring your heart and soul and party with The York Street Hustle this Valentine's weekend.

***
Each week, ten musicians arrive at a former South Philadelphia funeral home where, one by one, they unload their old tube amps and vintage gear. Once inside, the classic sounds of the 1960s are reinvigorated, reenergized and reborn. Legends, like Stevie, Aretha and the Four Tops; lesser-known artists including Donny Hathaway, Arthur Conley and Betty Everett – all are given new life.
In a few short years the York Street Hustle has gone from filling tiny South Street bars to repeated sell outs of WXPN’s World Cafe Live. Their repertoire now spans over 80 songs including more than a decade worth of Detroit, Memphis and Chicago soul. This is not your typical Motown wedding band. With grit, sweat, and attention to detail, The York Street Hustle is the Northeast’s premier 10-piece 1960s soul tribute.

The York Street Hustle is:

Allison Polans, vocals
Imani Roach, vocals
Ryan Williams, vocals
Big Heat, guitar
Steve Binnig, bass
Alec Meltzer, drums
Mike Kania, saxophone
Vince Tampio, trumpet
Nate Gonzalez, keys
Corey Mark, percussion

February 7, 2018 8:00PM Falsa at Franky Bradley's with special guests!

Falsa is thrilled to welcome Hartford Hot Several Brass Band to Franky Bradley's mid-week dance party!
"Hartford needed a funky band to bring brass, ruckus, and joy to all the parties. In 2012, we set out to be that band. You remember how in the intro to The A-Team it said, "If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire ... THE A-TEAM"? We're pretty much like that, provided that the problem you have is a lack of brass and ruckus!"

Described as "the cure for alienation" and "music that's not about means to ends but about meaning and transcendence," Falsa is an amazing musical experience rooted in 14th century Sufi music. The effect of listening to Falsa is to be transported both inwards and across centuries of joys, sorrows and longings.
