November 4, 2023 8:00 Minas Tribute to Astrud Gilberto at The Lounge at World Cafe LIve

Minas - Tribute to Astrud Gilberto
Minas pays homage to Astrud Gilberto, who passed away on June 5, 2023, in appreciation for her influence, inspiration, and service to Brazilian music.

Astrud Gilberto, immortalized on the classic recording of The Girl From Ipanema, passed away in Philadelphia on June 5, 2023. Astrudʼs whispery voice and unique approach to singing played a significant role in popularizing Bossa Nova worldwide, with “The Girl from Ipanema” earning a Grammy for Record of the Year, and a nomination for Best Vocal Performance by a Female in 1964. The edited single of "The Girl from Ipanema”, from the album Getz/Gilberto, sold over one million copies and was awarded a gold disc. It became one of the most covered songs in the history of pop music.

On November 4, Minas, featuring singer/pianist Patricia King Haddad, and partner singer/guitarist Orlando Haddad, along with band members
Andrew Neu (sax/flute), Tom Cohen (drums), and Brendan McGeehan (bass), will bring back the sound and songs made famous by Astrud Gilberto.

Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac, a non-profit Aztec cultural organization based in South Philadelphia, is hosting a free event at The Rotunda to celebrate its 20-year anniversary and Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on Wednesday, Nov. 1 from 6-9 p.m. 💀🌼🕯️💀🌸🕯️

There will also be a the theatrical piece titled “Camine, camine, camine pero nunca llege… (Walk, walk, walk but never arrive…),” which explores the immigration experience of crossing the border as well as cultural identity and traditions.

October 29, 2023 3:00PM Reverie: An Occasion of Dancers in Nature at Valley Green Inn

Reverie / Revelry (an occasion of dancers in nature)
You are invited to arrive to the riverside path in front of Valley Green Inn in the Wissahickon, where live music and dancers intertwine with boulders, the gentle splashing of geese along the shore, the sounds of insects, and the trembling of tree branches.
Produced by local artist Vivian Lehrer and featuring a live hand-pan looping set by Gary Dann (founder + drummer of Worldtown Soundsystem), a set by the DJ duo BlckTeeth + special guests, and about ten dancers dispersed along the path, this outdoor composition engages the local ecology and reorients the body to its environment. Guests are welcome to join the artist for conversation and contemplation, and to engage in dancing, listening, or simply coexisting.
The hope is to “score” the stroll along this 1/4-mile path as though it were a cinematic experience. We softly heighten our senses, draw attention to the symphonic effect of the fall colors, and invite new forms of engagement with the land.
The occasion offers an open score, during which guests may freely enter, exit, and revisit.
Three varieties of green apples available within the walk, to bring in your sense of taste.
Heavenly vegan food and elixirs for sale by JayaKava.
Bathrooms and parking are available at Valley Green Inn.
Co-sponsored by Salt Trails Philly and Philadelphia Parks + Recreation.
Free / By Donation.
