August 31, 2015 8:00 PM Tal National with H/PRIZM (High Priest) + High Vibes (Data Garden DJ's) at Silk City Diner Bar and Lounge

Tal National
With their intricate clockwork oiled by long years of touring their native Niger, Tal National’s second album for Fat Cat picks up where 2013’s Kaani left off. The group’s distinctly Nigerian fusion of musical and cultural influences takes in Taureg desert blues, Malian guitar mastery and the percussion of the Fulani, all baked stone-hard in the Sahel. If anything, Zoy Zoy is even more uncompromising than its predecessor.

Tal National, formed in the year 2000, is a West African phenomenon. The band is from Niamey, the capital city of Niger. They’ve had several #1 songs in their home country and are constantly featured on national TV.

Niger is West Africa’s largest nation, and one of the world’s poorest. Resting between Mali and Nigeria, and not far from Ghana, it enjoys a greatly varied mix of cultures and ethnicities, all richly steeped in music. Hence it is no stranger to highlife music, kora music, afrobeat, while giving the world ‘Tuareg Blues’ and its own brand of hip hop. Now Tal National is bringing something entirely new to the table, and Niger is growing increasingly unified in their passion for what the band has to offer.

Through this joyously hypnotic, highly unique contribution to West African guitar music with lightning-fast rhythms and a rotating cast of vocalists, the history of Niger can be heard as a cultural crossroads along ancient trade routes. Collected within the former French colony can be found Songhai, Fulani, Hausa, and Tuareg populations, all of whom are represented in Tal National’s members.

November 13, 2015 8:00 PM Hugh Masekela and Larry Willis at Longwood Gardens (Early posting because of likely sellout)

Trumpet legend Hugh Masekela, singularly famous for Grazin’ in the Grass, introduced the remarkable music of South Africa to the world at large. But he spent the formative years of his music training at the Manhattan School of Music learning the essence of jazz with the likes of Donald Byrd, Herbie Hancock and long time friend and veteran pianist Larry Willis.

Willis, who has been side man to such jazz heavies as Wynton Marsalis, Lee Morgan and Jackie McClean, joins Masekela to look back at some of the timeless jazz standards which Willis describes as “a culmination of a 50 year musical and personal brotherhood…it is all those days and nights of jam sessions…sharing our hopes, dreams, plans, the time spent soaking in all the music of New York City jazz clubs.”

August 14, 2015 8:00 PM Direct from Puerto Rico: Mijo de La Palma with Daniel De Jesus at A Seed on Diamond Gallery

From AfroTaino Productions' newsletter, "Keeping You in the Loop":
"MIJO DE LA PALMA – THE 21ST CENTURY ANSWER TO ROY BROWN IS HERE
Ojo, Boricua - This one is for you. Mijo de la Palma was born out of the eclectic musical scene in the western side of Puerto Rico. Their creative sound merges the earthy, melancholic lament of jíbaro with upbeat alt-pop melodies, resulting in their trademark Fusión jíbara. This blend of poetry and musical textures redefines the sounds of contemporary Puerto Rican music and provides the new generations with music intimately linked to their strong heritage. Besides all over his home island, Mijo de la Palma has performed stateside in San Francisco, Orlando, and throughout New England. Internationally, they’ve toured Spain and Mexico, where they were chosen to present at the prestigious 2011 TED Conference in San Miguel de Allende. In the states, they have performed frequently in San Francisco, Hartford, Bridgeport, Cambridge, Orlando and at the Passage Theater in New Jersey. Lead singer/director Melvin López Rivera (guitar and main vocals) will be joined by Adaliz Ortiz (backing vocals), Mario Schambon (percussion) and Billy Carrion (sax and flute), as well as Philly’s own Daniel de Jesus. AfroTaino Productions is a proud promotional partner of their Philly debut of their ‘Canto’e Jibaro’ US Summer Tour. Luiz Caracol is a singer-songwriter, guitarist and bassist based in Lisbon, Portugal. Just before his birth, his parents moved from Angola to the south of Portugal, settling in an African, Brazilian and Portuguese community. August 8, 2015 8:00 PM Fernanda Ulibarri + Interminable at A Seed on Diamond Gallery

From AfroTaino Productions' newsletter, "Keeping You in the Loop":
"Having toured the world performing with Mexican star Julieta Venegas & writing original songs for the popular Nickelodeon cartoon, "Go, Diego, Go!", Fernanda Ulibarri has set out to tour in support of her latest solo effort, "Country from Another Country". The Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter will be blessing this lucky Philadelphian audience with her self-described "polkas de amor". Also performing is the Philly-based experimental group, Interminable, whose sound ventures into the fuzzy overlapping spaces of ambient, jazz, son jarocho, and noise punk. In addition to all the musical energy, the gallery will be celebrating the opening weekend of the new exhibit, “In The Spirit of Gathering Spaces: Collectives, Collaborations and Initiatives. There will be artistic works on display from a handful of artists, including the astounding work of our chief photographer, Bryan Lathrop. This is guaranteed to be another magical night at A Seed on Diamond Gallery."
