January 1, 2017 3:00PM Resolution: A Piano Benefit for Jazz Bridge

Have plans for celebrating the new year?

It’s an occasion to dress up, overeat, make noise, get plastered and spend big $$$$ for the privilege. Even with the attendant hangover, this can be fun.

We offer an alternative. Pocket that December 31st splurge for one more day and share it with resolution: a piano benefit for Jazz Bridge—3pm, January 1, 2017.

Our celebration advances the good work of Jazz Bridge—a non-profit providing health, housing and social support to area jazz musicians and their families. The jazz musician courageously creates and expresses joy without the safety net of steady income and benefits. This is our way of saying thanks and embracing the new year with joyous, solemn, aspirational, inspirational, and just plain beautiful music.

From Selection 2.pngTwelve of our area’s greatest jazz pianists will take turns ringing in the new year on our gorgeous Steinway B. Food and drink will be served. A fire will roar in the wood stove. Low-pressure mingling will occur. Join us for something life-affirming and uplifting.

A $150 donation to Jazz Bridge in the name of @exuberance guarantees a place at the party.* Please click here to do so. Donation is tax-deductible in 2016. If you cannot attend, your donation(s) will sponsor attendance by a young music student** and provide them a chance to rub elbows with their artistic “elders.”

@exuberance is a special space for invitation-only jazz salons and other events. Located in a beautifully-converted South Kensington warehouse, it showcases musicians and their work, providing great acoustics and a rare chance to enjoy music- heard-right in an ideal, intimate setting.
Click here for invitations to future events.

Please share this invitation with 3 or 4 of your friends who love jazz and can support this great cause. If your friends also share with 3 or 4 of their friends, the pyramid effect can create a fitting audience for this extraordinary event and provide much needed support for our community.

* suggested donation minimum: $ 150 per person, although we'll gratefully accept more!
**students will be selected by their teachers from the Clef Club Jazz Ambassador Ensemble Program & Camden Creative Arts Jazz Band.

We invite you to read these words from the creator of Kwanzaa, Dr. Maulana Karenga, Professor and Chair of Africana Studies California State Universtiy, Long Beach;

“…The fifth principle is Nia which is essentially a commitment to the collective vocation of building, developing and defending our national community, its culture and history in order to regain our historical initiative and greatness as a people. True greatness and growth never occur in isolation and at other's expense. African philosophy teaches we are first and foremost social beings whose reality and relevance are rooted in the quality and the kinds of relations we have with each other. A cooperative communal vocation is an excellent context and encouragement for quality social relations. Our purpose is not to simply create money makers, but to cultivate men and women capable of social and human exchange on a larger more meaningful scale, men and women of culture and social conscience, of vision and values which expand the human project of freedom and development rather than diminish and deform it.”

Mysterious Travelers 3: Internal Investigations - a collaboration between The Free Library of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Jazz Project. Back by overwhelming popular demand! FREE concerts every fourth Monday night from October 2015 through May 2016 audiences will hear from veteran, as well as up-and-coming musicians who are shaping the future sounds of Philadelphia with a sharp ear to the legacies of our past. This season will directly celebrate the massive and amazing collections of the Free Library by granting our performers access to explore them as a source of inspiration for the creation of new musical works and arrangements

Alexis Simmons is talented, Philly-based vocalist, songwriter and photographer, who has made love a fine art when it comes to her craft. She was nurtured within the intensely demanding Philadelphia music scene, and honed her craft by incorporating her love, skill and versatility in music to her work as an open-mic afficionado, highly requested background singer for a wide variety of acts, (most recently for famed Hip-hop/Soul singer, Jaguar Wright of the Legendary Roots Crew & Jay-Z Unplugged) and magnetic solo act.

Alexis developed an ear and style for dance music, writing and performing singles such as the popular "Selene-The Goddess of the Moon" (released through Phuture Sole Recordings), in addition to co-producing her first indie project called "The Art of Seduction", and is the sole music producer for Indie performance trio, The Femme-Mynistiques.

SAVE THE DATE & SPREAD THE WORD
DRUM LIKE A LADY VOL.2 | 12.16.16 |10pm-2am
Open Jam Session @ Dahlak Paradise
Featuring the percussive stylings of Riesha Fayson

TaRiesha “Riesha” Fayson At the age of 10, when her church needed a drummer, Riesha (somewhat reluctantly) answered the call more so because she “didn’t really have a choice”. During her first lesson, given by her mother( who was not a musician), she was told to “keep the beat like you’re clapping your hands and stomping your feet”. With that simple yet essential drumming advice, her natural talent and a variety of Gospel, Pop, R&B and Jazz influences to draw from – she continued to develop her own style, skills and musicianship. In early 2014, Riesha was voted champion of the “Hit Like a Girl” global drumming competition for female drummers. Opening the door for her to perform at PASIC 2014, complete a 3-month tour playing in China and a TRX Cymbals endorsement. Riesha is currently the drummer for No Last Call Band and 3 churches. Riesha lives life by her mantra, “Dream BIG! Don’t limit yourself and don’t let anyone else limit you.

December 11, 2016 7:30-9:30PM Contemporary Afro-Cuban Dance Class at CEC

Contemporary Afro-Cuban Workshop with Darwin Matute Lopez at Community Education Center
Dancers and Teachers of Contemporary, West African, Cuban, or Classical Ballet styles:

Here is a rare opportunity to learn from Darwin Matute Lopez: an international performer based in Santiago de Cuba, trained at the Escuela Nacional del Arte from which all great Cuban dancers are spawned. Temporarily based in NYC, Matute is able to make a critical stop in Philly before returning to his homeland, in order to introduce himself, his unique style of Contemporary Afrocuban dance, and the Cuban method of training to our dance community.

If you're curious and want to know more about this little-known Cuban (which is to say Afrocuban) modern methodology; looking for fresh professional development opportunities; or craving a solid, effective technique class infused with incredible energy to complement your main style of movement, please come and experience this most singular opportunity. As a written preview:

The style of Contemporary Afrocuban is a long-wrought synergy of classical balletic and modern form with the beautiful undulations and insane energy of African dance, a style that could only ever have been created, evolved and its technique refined on the island of Cuba; a product of decades of her history and specific political conditions.

This Sunday December 11 from 7:30p-9:30p at the CEC (Community Education Center, 3500 Lancaster Ave). $18, wear comfortable clothes, no shoes or partner necessary (but bring your friends!).

Any questions, call 253.226.8332 or email angie.y.c@gmail.com

December 11, 2016 7:30 PM Arrastão do Dendê with Kyo Daiko and Dulsori at Crossroads Concerts

An Evening of Japanese, Brazilian, and Korean Percussion from Crossroads Concerts
The Arrastão do Dendê was formed in 2000 by Dendê Macêdo, an Afro-Brazilian percussionist from Salvador, Bahia. As a long-time member of Timbalada, one of Bahia’s leading bands, Dendê has peformed extensively throughout Brazil, Asia, Europe and the US.

In Bahia, an arrastão is a group of percussionists that parades during Carnaval and other street parties, playing traditional Afro-Brazilian rhythms on timbals, surdos, baqurinhas, and occasionally trumpets and trombones.

The Arrastão do Dendê performs traditional Afro-Brazilian rhythms as well as his own. With members from Brazil as well as many other countries from around the world, the group, accompanied by singers and dancers, has been featured in performances throughout New York and Philadelphia, including the Copacabana, BAMCafe, SOBs, Galapagos, Walker Stage and New York City’s Halloween Parade.

Founded in 2005, Founded in 2005, KyoDaiko is a community-based taiko drumming group associated with the Shofuso Japanese House & Garden in Fairmount Park.

Taiko is simply the Japanese word for “drum” and many of the instruments used in modern taiko have been used in Japanese music (as well as for military and ceremonial purposes) for centuries. However, in English it is often used to describe kumi-daiko, a type of ensemble developed in the 1950s that drew on and attempted to revitalize a variety of regional, classical, and ceremonial traditions. In the late 1960s, community taiko groups also became and continue to be an important expression of community identity and solidarity among Japanese Americans.

Kyo Daiko performs regularly at schools and community events, and has performed at Phillies Games, Stanford University in California, and Washington DC’s National Cherry Blossom Festival.

DULSORI
Korean percussion ensemble
"Traditionalism and spectacle merged in Dulsori… whose name means “wild beat”…. Huge drums placed overhead, along with flutes…. Deep, pounding rhythms derived from outdoor farmers’ festivals that could probably be heard in the next village." – New York Times

December 9, 2016 8:00-11:00PM Exuberance: Orrin Evans/Josh Lawrence Duo

There are different kinds of jazz. There’s the physical kind, the kind that speaks to the body, that makes you move, nod your head, feel the groove, makes you smile uncontrollably. That’s been part of this music from the beginning. Then there’s the more cerebral kind of jazz that appeals to the intellect, that challenges expectation, that sounds different, that makes you think. Orrin Evans doesn’t just work both sides of that street—he brings them together, with a ceaselessly passionate heart. Lots of heart.

His relentless creativity has produced 25 albums in the last 20 years in various associations with a who’s who of jazz musicians. Seven years ago he formed the Captain Black Big Band, providing a platform for a rotating ensemble of riveting east coast players and arrangers.

Among them is Josh Lawrence, a trumpeter of uncommon intelligence—endlessly inventive, soaringly lyrical with a tone to die for. Educator, composer and arranger, Josh leads his own Color Theory and co-leads the ambitious and eclectic Fresh Cut Orchestra.

Josh Lawrence and Orrin Evans—trumpet and piano—alone together.

For precedents think Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines, Ruby Braff and Ellis Larkins, Clark Terry and Oscar Peterson. Then think today. Modernist romanticism. Sounds that look back, but look forward as well.

In an acoustically ideal space, an intimate invention lab for beauty and more on a Friday evening. I can’t think of a better way to conclude our 2016 series of jazz salons @exuberance. Reward yourself and join us for this very special program.

December 9 & 10, 2016 8:00 & 10:00PM Minas Revisits the Classic Getz/Gilberto Album

***8 and 10pm shows on both December 9th and 10th***

Minas will pay homage to the classic album Getz/Gilberto, one of the most successful and revered jazz albums of all time. Minas, who was indicated for 4 Grammy Awards in 2015, will perform as an quintet: Orlando Haddad (guitar, vocals), Patricia King (piano, vocals), Jim Stager (bass), Tom Cohen (drums), and featuring saxophonist Andrew Neu.

Minas has been synonymous with Brazilian music in Philadelphia for over 3 decades. With 6 CDs to its credit, international Minas has been performing under its name since 1978, making it one of the most sought-after Brazilian groups in the United States today. Their interpretations of Bossa Nova, specifically the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, are not only authentic, but their own. Featuring Orlando Haddad and Patricia King, the husband/wife duo reflects three decades of vocal and instrumental blending. Andrew Neu and Minas have collaborated numerous times and their chemistry was right from day one. Andrew’s Stan Getz renditions not only bring Getz to mind, but are also his own. Neu has shared the stage with Sir Elton John, Patti Labelle, Mellissa Manchester, Mel Torme, Diane Schurr, Bobby Caldwell, The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Four Tops, and The Temptations.
