January 6, 2018 8:00-11:30PM Salsa Caliente! Three Kings Edition at The Painted Bride

For seasoned salseros and novices alike, Salsa Caliente! is Philly’s premier salsa nightlife series. Inspired by the New York City club scene of the 60s, Caliente invites dancers of any skill level or walk of life to enjoy the live energy of Latin music together. It’s a vision brought to life by Jesse Bermudez, founder of La Asociación de Músicos Latino Americanos (AMLA) and long-time Painted Bride collaborator.

With his help, The Bride’s theater will once again transform into a sultry cabaret-style dancehall and candlelit getaway. The evening begins with a group salsa lesson from Maestro Flaco of Flaco’s Dance Factory, and then, once acquainted with the groove, all dancers are welcome to get down the sounds of a live Latin big band. This season dance along to the all female Latin ensemble Ellas y Amigos.

“Ellas” was founded in 1997 by Donna Bostock/percussionist, Paula Breslin/Drum-set, and Suzzette Ortiz/pianist/vocalist and arranger. Shortly after; bassist Kathy Riddle joined the group becoming a quartet. After a year; saxophonist Lynn Riley and singer Gina Roche joined the band.
The name “Ellas” stands for “them”, feminine plural object. Its mission was to give strong women musicians a place to stretch musically and enjoy the passion of the Latin rhythms and culture. Their repertoire included Latin Jazz, danceable authentic and traditional music from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil as well as original compositions.
The group played in different configurations for almost three decades. Eventually; Ellas became Ellas y Amigos after incorporating men in the group. Some of the musicians included Ted Panama senior, Pedro Cruz ,Rubin Edwards, Orlando Fiol, Mateo Goldstein, Mark Beecher, Chico Huff just to name a few.
The group helped launch the music careers of people such as, Vanissa Santi, Crystal Torres, and Rene Ginnet .They traveled to Cuba, Bolivia, Puerto Rico and locations in the US performing, presenting workshops and gaining knowledge through professional development to enhance the sound of the band. They also opened up for Compay Segundo as well as Nestor Torres.

December 19, 2017 8:00PM -Midnight : Hawk Tubley's Holiday Hullabaloo

You are invited to join Hawk Tubley & The Ozymandians and their Special Guests for the first annual HAWK TUBLEY HOLIDAY HULLABALLOO. That's the eighth day of Hanukkah and less than a week before Mr. Claus comes barrelling down the chimney. This party will be the perfect chance to forget the national humbuggery, hang out and have a drink with friends, and enjoy some good music.

Hawk Tubley and The Ozymandians (Andres Villamil, Andy Davis, Dave Cope and Michael Szekely) blend folk, rock, punk, country and jazz influences to create their own idiosyncratic sound which has been called "unexpectedly psychedelic." Their most recent album is Pond Kings In April, available on Bandcamp.

Planet.MD are a duo featuring Barbara Duncan on drums and ANKH FYRE on vocals. Some might describe their style as "Afro-Futurism" but they describe themselves as "not your average praise & worship team." Their music is original, funky, and not like anything you've seen before. And they are a lot of fun.

Nick Millevoi is an incredible guitarist, recently back from London where he was featured on the BBC. He might play anything from a jazz interpretation of a Willie Nelson tune to a space age original Christmas song. His song explorations are joyful, fascinating and very satisfying.

21+ only.
$5 cover charge.

December 10, 2017 7:30PM Crossroads Concerts: Rose Tatuata: Sicilian Roots Music

Love of Sicilian and Southern Italian roots music drives Rosa Tatuata to passionately interpret the traditions and melodies of their ancestors. Just as their name comes from Tennessee Williams’ beloved play about the happy, raucous collision of immigrant and American cultures, their performance relates that incredible commingling to their beloved audience through song!

Fueled by their research into traditional instruments like the tamburo (Sicilian frame drum), organetto (a type of button accordion), marranzano (jaw harp) and zampogna (bagpipes), Rosa Tatuata introduces traditional songs into different musical contexts that rhythmically mirror the commingling of Old and New Worlds. With an enchanting mix of ballads and dance tunes, they will take your imagination to sunbathed Southern Italy and the clear, crystal-blue waters surrounding Sicily.

Early recognition began in 1999, when he participated in the Bahian Music Festival by University of Vitória da Conquista. Here. he and The Curupira band won blessing of Waly Salomão, one of the greatest "Tropicalia" poets. This led to Rafael being placed in the hall of the greats "novissimos baianos.” Waly traveled with the young Rafael to São Paulo to record the program "Música brasileira" in the studios of Trama, with João Marcelo Bôscoli, the son of the legendary Elis Regina.

Rafael Pondé has recorded four albums. He has toured Europe and Latin America, and has played in The Weltkulture festival in Germany. In 2014, he was invited to come to the USA to work with the musical company Sconnection as a performer and recording musician.

In 2016, Rafael was elected as "Brazilian cultural ambassador" for the program "Partners of America.” His workshops and speeches share Brazilian culture and focus on building cultural understanding and overcoming racism through music and the arts.In 2010, while living in Rio de Janeiro released his short documentary "O novíssimo baiano" directed by Helio Rodrigues.

◊ Rebirth Brass Band ◊

Simply put, The Rebirth Brass Band is an institution. Formed in 1983, the band has long since graduated from the streets of New Orleans to theaters and festivals all over the world. Rebirth is committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands while at the same time incorporating modern music into their show. Their signature brand of heavy funk has placed them among the world’s top brass bands and they are the hands-down favorite among the younger generation. In reference to the sometimes-stringent competition amongst brass bands, Offbeat magazine remarked, “…it’s clear that Rebirth, which boasts 10 albums and has traveled the world, is the band to beat.

December 8, 2017 8:30PM The York Street Hustle Holiday Spectacular at Union Transfer - Philadelphia

The York Street Hustle

Each week, ten musicians arrive at a former South Philadelphia funeral home where, one by one, they unload their old tube amps and vintage gear. Once inside, the classic sounds of the 1960s are reinvigorated, reenergized and reborn. Legends, like Stevie, Aretha and the Four Tops; lesser-known artists including Donny Hathaway, Arthur Conley and Betty Everett – all are given new life.

In a few short years the York Street Hustle has gone from filling tiny South Street bars to repeated sell outs of WXPN’s World Cafe Live. Their repertoire now spans over 90 songs including more than a decade worth of Detroit, Memphis and Chicago soul. This is not your typical Motown band. With grit, sweat, and attention to detail, The York Street Hustle is the Northeast’s premier 10-piece 1960s soul tribute.

Join the band for their annual holiday spectacular, including many Motown and Soul holiday favorites!

The York Street Hustle is:
Allison Polans, vocals
Imani Roach, vocals
Ryan Williams, vocals
Big Heat, guitar
Brendan McGeehan, bass
Alec Meltzer, drums
Mike Kania, saxophone
Vince Tampio, trumpet
Nate Gonzalez, keys
