April 28 - 30, 2016 9:00 PM Pasion Y Arte presents Tablao Philly at Asian Arts Initiative

PASION Y ARTE PRESENTS: TABLAO PHILLY
Pasión y Arte (PyA), Philadelphia's premier all-female flamenco dance company, is pleased to present TABLAO PHILLY, sponsored by PNC Arts Alive. Starting October 2015 and occurring quarterly, this series will take place at the Asian Arts Initiative at 1219 Vine Street. The performance will showcase unique interpretations of flamenco and wine and tapas will be served.

Reminiscent of the cafe like environment of the 18th and 19th century tablaos of Spain, TABLAO PHILLY will recreate for the first time in Philadelphia a contemporary tablao experience. Originally tablaos were comparable to beat poetry cafes or improvisational jazz clubs, where diverse audiences would gather to drink, eat and enjoy music, rhythm, and movement by masters of the flamenco art form in an informal atmosphere of merriment. Philadelphia audiences will have the unique opportunity to participate in this classic experience as the intimate black box theater of the Asian Arts Initiative is transformed into a tablao where they will enjoy wine and tapas as they witness some of today's most respected and well known flamencos exhibit their craft.

PyA is excited to continue TABLAO PHILLY into 2016 and to bring new flamenco guest artists from both Spain and the United States to Philadelphia. Visit the PyA website for upcoming guest artist announcements.

April 21, 2016 8:00 PM The Gipsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes and Tonino Baliardo at The Keswick

Melding deep-heated flamenco, rumba, salsa and pop to the tune of 20 million albums sold, the Grammy Award-winning hit-makers behind 'Bamboléo' celebrate in their very own, blistering tradition – taking audiences back to the south of France with flamenco guitars and booming Spanish vocals.

Uniting the family Reyes and the family Baliardo, the band continues a tradition that has drawn famous fans such as Picasso, Cocteau, Dali and Chaplin. From playing on the streets of Cannes and the hedonistic heights of St. Tropez, breaking world music barriers as one of the rare groups to climb the US and World music charts. Featured in the likes of The Big Lebowski, Toy Story 3 and Glee, the band has embraced western classics by Bob Marley, the Doobie Brothers and The Eagles with globe-hopping grace, whilst also incorporating dramatic cues from Brazilian and Caribbean culture.

Now bringing the party back to the United States, The Gipsy Kings will raise the roof with dance-ready furore, returning to their groundbreaking eponymous album and the nomadic spirit that has led them to their latest, Savor Flamenco – giving audiences the 'deep shout at the heart of our community'.

Mamady Kouyate & Mandingo Ambassadors:

The Mandingo Ambassadors was founded in New York City by griot-guitarist Mamady Kouyate in 2005. As a veteran of the great orchestras of the golden age of Guinean dance bands, Mamady is a living library of musical science inherited from his ancestors and from a half century of experience as an arranger, band leader, accompanist and soloist. Mamady Kouyate carried this heritage with him to New York where he has collaborated with members of the West African diaspora and Western musicians to continue the great tradition and sound of Guinean Afro-jazz.

"The music of the Mandingo Ambassadors has been structured to make you feel good. It puts dazzling vocal and guitar patterns over a rhythm section that is like a perfect system: a locked drum groove, much of it played on high-hat cymbal and drum rims; soft bass lines that fall short or start late, or leave gaps in a run of notes; fingerpicked rhythm guitar notes like clear fizz.

(...)The friction between the elder Mr. Kouyate and the rhythm guitarist Mamady Kourouma, their phrases running together and pulling apart, drove the band. Mr. Kouyate's leads were high, trebly phrases, wet with echo, dipping occasionally for a run of authoritative low notes. The rhythm notes, which Mr. Kourouma played with his fingers, popped along steadily. It could have gone on forever, and that was a nice thought." -Ben Ratliff/New York Times

"Guinean guitarist Mamady "Djelike" Kouyate came of age among such legendary 1970s guitarcentric combos as the Horoya Band and Bembeya Jazz, which blended Cuban rumba with traditional balafon-based sounds." - Richard Gehr/Village Voice
