December 17, 2022 8:00PM The York Street Hustle Holiday Spectacular at World Cafe Live

Each week, ten musicians arrive at a former South Philadelphia funeral home where, one by one, they unload their old tube amps and vintage gear. Once inside, the classic sounds of the 1960s are reinvigorated, re-energized and reborn. Legends, like Stevie, Aretha and the Four Tops; lesser-known artists including Donny Hathaway, Arthur Conley and Betty Everett – all are given new life. In a few short years the York Street Hustle has gone from filling tiny South Street bars to repeated sell outs of World Cafe Live. Their repertoire now spans over 80 songs including more than a decade worth of Detroit, Memphis and Chicago soul. This is not your typical Motown wedding band. With grit, sweat, and attention to detail, The York Street Hustle is the Northeast’s premier 10-piece 1960s soul tribute.

December 9 & 10, 2022 Rennie Harris' "Rome and Jules" at Penn Live Arts

“The most brilliant hip-hop choreographer in America,” (The New Yorker) Rennie Harris, is back with a complete re-mounting of one of his most celebrated works, Rome & Jewels. A story of love, fear, violence and triumph, Rome & Jewels challenges preconceived notions of Shakespeare with a hip hop journey through the streets of Philadelphia. The evening-length production was groundbreaking globally, winning numerous awards as it explored racial, religious and economic questions through the lens of gang violence. Honoring Puremovement’s 30th anniversary and featuring some of the original cast, Elizabethan drama gets intermixed with hip hop rhythms and tragic gang culture, resulting in an epic and poetic look at real life.

This performance contains strong language and sexual content.

November 29, 2022 8:00-10:30PM Nightlife at the Kimmel: People of Earth feat. Victor Pablo with Flaco's Dance Factory

People of Earth is a global music collective set on blurring the barriers between the great art forms of the terrestrial sphere, creating an explosive blend of the music of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil and beyond. The world class musicians who make up this collective represent more than 8 different nationalities and have played with a vast range of artists from Gloria Estefan to Ruben Blades to the New York Philharmonic and more.

Marck “Flaco” Best has been teaching popular forms of cultural social dance since 1997, with a particular focus on those rhythms that allow him to embrace his Cuban heritage. He is a tenured instructor with the Mt. Airy Learning Tree. After being trained by Monsieur Pierre Dulaine in his method, Flaco became one of the original teaching artists for Dancing Classrooms Philly, sister to the program in New York City used in the film Mad Hot Ballroom. Maestro Flaco continues to teach, perform, and choreograph, while conducting residencies in our schools to help ensure that future generations of dancers get the exposure, inspiration, and examples they need to empower them to make the choice to become professional artists.
