June 28, 2012 6:00 PM - 2:00 AM PICÓ TIKI TACO @ Night Market/Italian Market

El Costeno, 940 South 9th St

A project designed and composed by:

Juan Bustamante & Miguel Antonio Horn

... DJs:

Russ Alexander (Bottom Power, Rock Tits)

Juanderful (TROPICALISMO, EQuatorial Funk)

Cocktail specialists:

Stephen Seibert (all over Philly and beyond, come say your farewells, this might be his last public appearance)

Alejandro Vaca-Pina (Village Whiskey)

Josh Christian (Tinto)

This is an all night experience starting at 6pm, connected with the Night Market that will take place on the Italian Market and continuing through the night, beyond the street festivities.

We are taking over El Costeño restaurant, setting up a sound system art installation(for one night only), making some fine cocktails, and dancing to some tropical jams.
The artwork we designed for this event is a site-specific sculptural installation using materials donated by vendors of the Italian market that is reminiscent of Colombia's Caribbean music culture. A "Picó" is an elaborate sound system used by dj's in coastal Colombia, traditionally painted with vibrant folk imagery. We have created a structure recalling these "picós" to be installed in El Costeño restaurant (940 S 9th St), which will be on view to the public, June 28th, for one night only.

Following the festivities of the Night Market, the installation will come alive as DJs Russ Alexander (Rock
Tits, Making Time, Bottom Power) and Juanderful (Tropicalismo, Equatorial Funk) will provide a Caribbean soundtrack for the night from within the artwork.

Mixologists Steven Seibert of Amada and Alejandro Vaca-Piña of Village Whiskey and Josh Christian of Tinto will be offering specialty tiki cocktails created specifically for the event.

A taco menu will be available by El Costeño's kitchen for late night bites.

SLAVIC SOUL PARTY

Throbbing funk grooves, fiery Balkan brass, Gypsy accordion wizardry, and virtuoso jazz chops. Slavic Soul Party has created an acoustic mash-up of Balkan and Gypsy sounds, weaving the gospel, techno, funk, dub, jazz and Latin influences of New York’s neighborhoods seamlessly into a Balkan brass setting. SSP’s music has won the ears of fans and musicians on both sides of the Atlantic, and their tunes have been learned by Serbian brass stars Boban Markovic Orkestar and New Orleans funk sensations Galactic, among others. One of the hardest working bands in Brooklyn, SSP performs throughout North America, Europe, Africa and beyond, and have performed at Babylon (Istanbul) with the Karandila Orkestar, at Irving Plaza (New York City) with Gogol Bordello, on the Warped Tour, in Carnegie Hall, in Sing Sing prison, and in virtually every major New York club.

SUN RA ARKESTRA

The Sun Ra Arkestra returns for their third Summer Series appearance with another very rare hometown performance which is sure to have audiences either dancing feverishly or contemplatively traversing the spaceways. Founded in 1958 under the leadership of Sun Ra, the Arkestra pioneered a unique brand of afro-futurism, forging intersecting musical pathways that explore outer space and Egyptian mythology. Drawing on the work of Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson, the Arkestra are pioneers of the bop-derived avant-garde and collective improvisation. Their work has had tremendous impact on scores of musicians including MC5, Sonic Youth and George Clinton. Following the Arkestra's influential tenures in Chicago and New York City, Sun Ra and the Arkestra relocated to Philadelphia in 1968, where they continue their commitment to the study, research and development of Sun Ra's musical precepts. Following the ascension of Sun Ra in 1993 and John Gilmore in 1995, Maestro Marshall Allen (b. 1924) has launched the Sun Ra Arkestra into a dimension beyond that of mere "ghost" band by writing fresh arrangements of Sun Ra's music, as well as composing new music and arrangements for the Arkestra.

WARRIORS OF THE WONDERFUL SOUND FEATURING DAVE LIEBMAN AND ODEAN POPE
PERFORMING JOHN COLTRANE’S A LOVE SUPREME

West Philadelphia’s Bobby Zankel was drawn to the saxophone by the thrilling new sounds being explored in the 1960s jazz scene, in particular the music of John Coltrane. He studied with Cecil Taylor, eventually became involved with the avant-garde jazz scene of the early 1970s, performing alongside the likes of bassist William Parker and violinist Billy Bang. Zankel is now one of the leading lights of the local jazz community. His most influential work has been his ten years of composing for his long-standing big band Warriors of the Wonderful Sound which features many of Philadelphia’s best musicians. For this very special performance, he is joined by two saxophone masters: Odean Pope, best known for his two decades with the Max Roach Quartet; and Dave Liebman, who performed and recorded with Miles Davis from 1970 to 1974. In celebration of saxophone legend John Coltrane’s birthday, the Warriors and these specials guests revisit his seminal 1964 recording, A Love Supreme, which they will play in its entirety.

Ile Aiye 1:00 pm
David Byrne
Documentary

An impressionistic documentary on Candomble, the African derived spirit cult of Bahia Brazil. Ile Aiye explores the way in which Candomble has influenced the daily life and culture of Brazil. Art, Music, Food, Dance, Theater, and more has been influenced by the worship of the Orixa, a spirit pantheon rivaling that of the Ancient Greeks, originating manly from Yorubaland West Africa. This film is a great introduction to many of the elements found in subsequent films, Afro-Brazilian contributions, and Brazilian Pop culture

Quilombo 2:00 pm
Carlos Diegues
Historical Epic

This Historical saga is a stirring fusion of folklore, political impact, dynamic storytelling, realized in vibrant tropical colors and set to the pulling beat of a rhythmic musical score. Set in 17th century Brazil, groups of runaway slaves escaped to mountainous jungle strongholds, where they formed self-governing communities known as Quilombos. This film is based off the true story of Brazil's most famous and longest lasting Quilombo, Palmares. Led by the Legendary Ganga Zumba and his protegee Zumbi, they kept Portuguese and Dutch forces at bay for decades.
Orfeu Negro 4:15 pm
Marcel Camus
Melodrama

1960 Academy Award winner, Orfeu Negro retells the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice against the madness of Rio De Janeiro's Carnival. Orpheus is a heart-breaker who falls madly in love with Eurydice. Eurydice has fled her home to escape death who stalks her. In Greek Mythology Orpheus' talent is so great he can make rocks dance and the sun rise with his music. Is he powerful enough to keep Eurydice from impending doom and an eternity in the underworld? With an all black cast, this film was to Brazil what Carmen Jones was to the United States. This is also the film that introduced the infectious Bossa Nova sound to the world.
