December 19, 2015 8:00 PM Rez Abbasi's "Invocation" at The Painted Bride Art Center

Guitarist and Composer Rez Abbasi brings his explosive group, Invocation, to Painted Bride for the second time. Joined by alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, pianist Vijay Iyer, bassist Johannes Weidenmüller, drummer Dan Weiss, Abbasi will present new material commissioned by Chamber Music America that further mingles the Qawwali sounds of his Pakistani heritage with contemporary jazz.

“The band that Abbasi has assembled here is ideal, including his South Asian comrades on alto saxophone and piano: Rudresh Mahanthappa and Vijay Iyer, who have been two of the most important jazz musicians in the last decade. Dan Weiss is on drums, bringing a huge backbeat combined with scholarly knowledge of South Asian rhythms, and Johannes Weidenmueller brings wide experience on bass. This band, which has recorded together before, certainly sounds great.” – PopMatters

Invocation is Rez Abbasi (guitar), Rudresh Mahanthappa (saxophone), Vijay Iyer (piano), Johannes Weidenmüller (bass), and Dan Weiss (drums).

December 10, 2015 7:00 PM and 9:30 PM Gerald Veasley's Electric MIngus Project at SOUTH

Gerald Veasley's Electric Mingus Project Promo from Fanwave Media on Vimeo.

Gerald Veasley's Electric Mingus Project
Gerald Veasley re-imagines the music of the legendary bassist and composer Charles Mingus, who has inspired more controversy than perhaps any other in jazz. Mingus' unique approach is ever present in his compositions and has made him a fascination to the generations of jazz musicians that followed.

One such musician is renowned bassist Gerald Veasley. A world-class player and composer himself, Veasley leads the five piece Electric Mingus Project which. The adventurous group revisits Mingus' compositions using both modern electronic and standard instrumentation: John Swana - EVI, Chris Farr - EWI and Saxophones, Tony Miceli - Vibes and Harry "Butch" Reed" - Drums.

When asked to explain the goals of what initially appears to be a tribute project, Veasley responded, "Any musical project should reflect not just how you play, but also how you are as a person. We want this project to be a snapshot of these five musicians and who they are."

By rejecting the idea of a tribute project in this way, the Electric Mingus Project in fact pays the ultimate tribute to the late composer. As Mingus turned back to the blues, Veasley turns back to Mingus for the same purpose: to find a vehicle for sincere personal expression. Charles Mingus wouldn't want it any other way.
