September 6, 2019 8:00PM Arturo Stable Trio at Exuberance

Here uptown on Mascher St., we present music under polite, controlled conditions. Meanwhile, downtown at 15th and Ritner, all hell breaks loose on Tuesdays at Arturo’s most-exuberant, no-holds-barred musical celebrations of Latin and “not-so-Latin” music, with teeming audiences spilling out onto the streets. This artist is the real deal.

Arturo headlined a blistering salon @exuberance back in September of 2016. He appeared again memorably with Chano Dominguez in 2017 and again that year with the phenomenal Ariacne Trujillo. A prolific composer with several terrific albums to his name as leader, Arturo has performed and recorded with a dizzying rollcall of great musicians including Dave Samuels, Paquito D’Rivera, Lionel Loueke, Terri Lyne Carrington, Esperanza Spalding, Miguel Zenon, Jane Bunnett and David Sanchez. Originally from Santiago de Cuba, Arturo’s transit between percussionist and drummer reflects an evolving curiosity and mastery of many styles of jazz and traditional musics.

Joining Arturo for this performance of his compositions new and old:Roberta Piket began studying piano at age 7. Teachers included Walter Bishop, Jr., Fred Hersch, Stanley Cowell, Bob Moses and Richie Beirach. She has performed with Dave Liebman, Rufus Reid, Victor Jones, Lionel Hampton, Mickey Roker, Eliot Zigmund, Benny Golson, Ted Curson, Valery Ponomarev, Juini Booth, Virginia Mayhew, and the BMI/NY Jazz Orchestra. A composer and educator, Roberta leads her own trio and performs solo. She is master of both piano and the B3.Yunior Terry began his musical training at age 7 also—at the National School of Art in Havana, with a double major in violin and bass. At CalArts he studied under Charlie Haden. He has performed with Steve Coleman, Jerry Gonzales and Fort Apache, Lila Downs, Jeff Tain Watts, Eddie Palmieri, Hilton Ruiz, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Steve Turre, Jane Bunnett, and his brother Yosvany Terry among many others. He leads his own band “Son de Altura” and teaches at NYU.
At this post-Labor Day salon, expect fireworks and extreme beauty with this dynamic trio.

Performance: Intercultural Journeys

Intercultural Journeys presents Modupúe | Ibaye, an interactive performance exploring the Yoruba culture of West Africa and the Caribbean. An intergenerational cast of Philadelphia’s Yoruba-rooted artists, dancers, and musicians explore the diverse expressions of their worldwide diaspora.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Led by Germaine Ingram, Alex Shaw, Lela Aisha Jones, and Dorothy Wilkie, the project activates performance as research, engaging intimately with community historians, local masters, and spiritual and cultural practitioners through story circles and artist-led exploratory workshops. Throughout the project, IJ and the project leaders will archive and share the results of this research through engagements and events that are as multi-dimensional, dynamic, and vibrant as Yoruba-rooted traditions themselves.

On Sunday, September 1, enjoy the celebration of Yoruba-rooted performance traditions as Modupúe | Ibaye: The Philadelphia Yoruba Performance Project headlines the PECO Free First Sunday Family Day at the Barnes Foundation. Performed by an intergenerational and intercultural ensemble, this festive event will begin with an outdoor processional and ancestral tribute, followed by performances and lectures.
Modupúe | Ibaye: The Philadelphia Yoruba Performance Project has been supported by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.
Free tickets are available on-site at 10am, include collection access, and are limited to four per person. Families with children under 18 get priority access to the collection at the time of arrival. Tickets go fast, but you don’t need one to enjoy our other activities and performances. And if you want even more fantastic Brazilian music, join us September 8 for the Brazilian Day Festival part of the PECO Multicultural Series.
About PhillyBloco:
PhillyBloco is modeled after the blocos of Rio de Janeiro, with their large percussion sections and harmonic/vocal accompaniment. Our group is comprised of twelve drummers, electric guitar, bass guitar, vocals, horn section, accordion, and Brazilian dancers. The group performs a raucous mash-up of samba, funk, reggae, and more made popular by both Brazilian and non-Brazilian artists including Olodum, Timbalada, Monobloco, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder. The one constant in all of their music is a heavy percussive element (12 drummers!) that they use to explore the tremendous range of Brazilian rhythms, applying their own unique creativity and energy to each arrangement.

The music is extremely high energy, full of passion and feeling. Philly Bloco wants to make people dance, feel good, and give them something to celebrate every time they see them perform!
