9PM - Combo Chimbita

About Combo Chimbita:

Rooted in Colombia and based in New York, Combo Chimbita lives in the future. After playing together for years, these first-generation New Yorkers—powerhouse vocalist Carolina Oliveros, synth and bassist Prince of Queens, guitarist Niño Lento, and drummer Dilemastronauta—began experimenting with different traditional musical styles during their late night residencies at Barbès in Brooklyn. Exploring the connections between visual identity and improvisational long-form trips, Combo Chimbita came together as a four-piece band after they started encouraging more vocals by Carolina Oliveros, who tightens the rhythm with her guacharaca. Although their backgrounds are in heavy rock, metal, and psychedelic funk and soul, they gleefully fuse elements from cumbia, 70s funaná from Cape Verde, kompa from Haiti as well as salsa & reggae, mixing the Guacharaca and futuristic-yet-retro synth sounds.

January 31, 2018 8:00PM Dende Macedo's "Recycled Sounds" at World Cafe Live

Recycled Sounds is a project that developed out of world renowned percussionist Dendê Macêdo’s interest in making instruments out of found materials. Over the years he has created a trove of instruments including a bucket shekere, a golf club berimbau, a tire drum, and a trash can snare drum that was incorporated into a line of instruments manufactured by Latin Percussion.

Dendê began recording himself playing his instruments and ultimately began working with a loop pedal which enabled him to record short pieces of each instrument that would cycle, enabling him to layer each of the instruments while performing live.

The obvious connection to sustainable practice was an element that he began to incorporate into his performances in order to be able to transmit an important message about our environment. The conduit for this message is an inventive performance on a bunch of wild looking instruments that make some interesting and distinctive sounds.

Dendê Macêdo is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer, bandleader and teacher. He became a professional musician at14, as a member of Carlinhos Brown’s superstar percussion ensemble Timbalada. He now lives in the US, working with his folkloric group Ologundê, his massive percussion ensemble Arrastao do Dende and his flagship Dendê & Band with whom has performed throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Dendê has provided educational programs at institutions such as Lincoln Center, Juilliard, the Eastman School of Music and the Peabody Conservatory.

MIXED PEOPLE

PRIMA DONNA

Siros' career in drumming branches out into many different areas. From recording drums for artists all from over the world, playing internationally with legendary Iranian singer Aref Arefkia and playing all over Sweden with the established Tomas Ledin tribute band Just Nu, to teaching students from all around the world over Skype from his own drum studio, Siros has no trouble keeping himself busy. Throughout all of this, he actively works to inspire and motivate other drummers to pursue careers in music via his career mentoring sessions, online videos and drum clinics.

Beats, Brews, & Banter is a free quarterly event that gives local drummers, musicians, and wannabes a chance to network, share ideas, and learn from some of the best drummers in the area.

Philly Drum Project is a percussive collective dedicated to making drumming more accessible by helping drummers in the Philadelphia area share knowledge, beats, and gear. Beats, Brews, & Banter has featured such drummers as Eric Slick (Dr. Dog), Spanky McCurdy (Jill Scott, Lady Gaga), and Fred Berman (Amos Lee). For more information, visit www.phillydrumproject.org.

January 11 - February 18, 2018 6:00PM Beginner Palmas Y Pies Flamenco Lessons at Sound Space

During this 5-week session, students will begin to learn about various flamenco palos (rhythms) and how to express them with palmas (rhythmic hand clapping) and zapateo (percussive footwork). After mastering the proper colocación (posture), students will learn how different parts of the feet are used to make sound; including planta (the ball of the foot), tacón (the heel), golpe (a stomp of the entire foot), and punta (the point of the toe). We will also break down twelve and four beat rhythms using the two types of rhythmic hand-clapping (palmas sordas/palmas altas). Each class will end with Sevillanas, a traditional dance done in pairs that stems from folkloric Spanish dance. When you buy in advance, all five classes are $60.

January 8, 2018 8:00PM LaNOCHE: Free Latin Dance Party with Forro in the Dark at The Kimmel Center

Heat up the Kimmel Center each month at La NOCHE! Experience the hottest live bands as you turn up the steam on the dance floor, led by host/dance leader Kevin Ngo.

Each month, we kick off the party with The La NOCHE Band, led by master percussionist Arturo Stable. We then welcome a different guest group to light up the floor.

8-9PM – The La NOCHE Band

9PM - Forro in the Dark
One of the most exciting bands to come out of the two decade strong and wild late night Nublu scene in the East Village of New York City, Forró in the Dark combines the driving dance rhythms of forró from Northeastern Brazil with a melting pot of rock, jazz, reggae, psychedelia, folk and more. Together since 2002, the collective of New York based Brazilian ex-pats Mauro Refosco (percussion), Guilherme Monteiro (guitar) and Jorge Continentino (pífanos, flutes, saxophones) have collaborated and performed with a wide variety of artists including David Byrne, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Thom Yorke’s Atoms for Peace, Bebel Gilberto, Gal Costa and many others.
