Beats, Brews, & Banter is a free monthly event that gives local drummers, musicians, and wannabes a chance to network, share ideas, and learn from some of the best drummers in the area.

This month's featured guest, Mike Greenfield, is a Philadelphia based drummer that has been involved in the “livetronica” genre for over 15 years. He has been a member of the instrumental electronic jam band, Lotus, since 2009 and has performed at sold out shows across the country. Mike's presentation follows Lotus's recent sold out Red Rocks show, the 4th year in a row for the band. Mike also regularly plays with Electron, Night Moves, and Sucker Punch and will give a demonstration of how to play live with Ableton.

Philly Drum Project is a percussive collective dedicated to making drumming more accessible by helping drummers in the Philadelphia area share gear, lessons, and beats. Beats, Brews, & Banter is held on the first Monday of every month and has featured such drummers as Eric Slick (Dr. Dog), Spanky McCurdy (Jill Scott, Lady Gaga), and Fred Berman (Amos Lee).

Saturday, November 1st celebrating ‪#‎Halloween‬ and ‪#‎DayofthrDead‬ at Underground Arts with PhillyBloco // TROPICALISMO MUNDIAL Juanderful Juan & Greg Scruggs. ‪#‎DiadelosMuerto‬ en ‪#‎Philly‬
Resident DJs Juanderful and Gregzinho are proud to celebrate 4 años of tropical vibes in Philly and beyond at Underground Arts on the ever auspicious Día de los Muertos / Day of the Dead. We've brought you Carnivals, club nights, street festivals, First Friday residencies, multimedia installations, and always always siempre the freshest sounds from our travels throughout the Afro-Latin-Caribbean world.
PhillyBloco is modeled after the blocos of Rio de Janeiro, with their large percussion sections and harmonic/vocal accompaniment. Our group is comprised of twelve drummers, electric guitar, bass guitar, vocals, horn section, accordion, and Brazilian dancers. The group performs a raucous mash-up of SAMBA, FUNK, REGGAE and more made popular by both Brazilian and non-Brazilian artists including: Olodum, Timbalada, Monobloco, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder. The one constant in all of our music is a heavy percussive element (12 drummers!) that we use to explore the tremendous range of Brazilian rhythms, applying our own unique creativity and energy to each arrangement.

From Bill Chenevert at Philadelphia Weekly:
"PhillyBloco is huge, both in local esteem and size-wise: They’ve got 12 drummers, an electric and bass guitar, a horn section, accordion and a bombastic Brazilian dance troupe. That’s like 20-plus folks giving you full-on Rio realness. Meanwhile, Tropicalismo is the project of Juanderful Juan and Greg “Gregzinho” Scruggs, and they’re committed to turning revelers into dancing ghouls, they say, with “both old-school rhythms and nu-skool riddims from Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean.” As we’re getting funky underground, our friends south of the border will be celebrating the Day of the Dead, an international—but particularly Mexican—send-up to the souls lost to death, a beautiful tradition that dates back 3,000 years."

November 1, 2014 1:00-4;00 PM Mexican Day of The Dead Celebration at Penn Museum

Day of the Dead Celebration
Throughout Mexico and around the world, Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) brings family and friends together to pray for and remember loved ones who have died. Far from a morose affair, Day of the Dead is a celebration, rich in traditions and connections—it is at heart a celebration of life.
On Saturday, November 1, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, the Penn Museum presents the third annual Day of the Dead Celebration, with pageantry, traditional music and dance, storytelling and puppetry, paper maché artistry, sugar skull and mask making, face painting, special foods and more. Guests can view colorful altars (ofrendas) designed by regional community groups, and a large Day of the Dead altar created by the Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia and the Mexican Cultural Center, co-organizers of the event, with the help of local artist Cesar Viveros.

The Day of the Dead Celebration is free with Penn Museum admission ($15, general admission; $13, seniors [65+]; $10, children [6-17] and full-time students [with ID]; $2 ACCESS Card holders; free to children under 5, members, active U.S. Military, STAMP and PennCard holders). The Celebration, the first in the Museum’s World Culture Day series, is presented with support from the William M. King Charitable Foundation and PECO.

Guests to the Day of the Dead Celebration also enjoy free admission to the Treasures Jewelry Sale and Show in the Museum’s Kintner-Dietrich galleries. Presented by the Penn Museum Women’s Committee, Treasures features antique, vintage, and contemporary jewelry and accessories from two dozen designers drawn from around the country. Proceeds from Treasures benefit the Museum’s cultural and educational programs. Details, including special Saturday programs, are online at www.wcpennmuseum.com.

Day of the Dead altars honor the lives of those who have passed. Creating these altars is one of the most important traditions during Day of the Dead in Mexico—and in Mexican-American and Latino communities worldwide. The modern Mexican holiday is a rich blending of traditions, its origins traced back to beliefs and activities of indigenous peoples of Central and South Mexico, as well as Catholic celebrations of All Saints' Day and All Souls’ Day.

The altars typically have three levels: one for food and flower offerings to those who have died, and one that touches on religious traditions, including the pre-Hispanic tradition that to remember someone is to “bring them back” among the living. The final level dedicates the altar to someone.

This year, the Mexican Cultural Center and the Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia dedicate the celebration’s centerpiece altar to Mexican poet, essayist, and diplomat Octavio Paz (1914–1998). Staff from both organizations are collaborating in the design and construction of a massive seven-tiered altar honoring the 1990 Nobel Prize recipient. Visitors can view the centerpiece altar in the Museum’s Chinese Rotunda.

Guests of all ages can join in the celebration with craft making and face painting activities beginning at 11:00 am. Families can enjoy shaping sugar skulls starting at 1:00 pm. Food is very much a part of the Day of the Dead celebrations, and guests may sample traditional “pan de muerto” bread and spicy hot chocolate, Maya-style, while supplies last.

At 1:15 pm, children’s author Cynthia Weill reads her new book “Mi Familia Calaca,” accompanied by the marionettes of Los Ramirez Castañeda de Xoxocotla. Dancers from Grupo de Danza Nuevo Mexico don traditional dress, paint their faces as skulls (calaveras), and perform Mexican folk dances at 1:50 pm. At 2:30 pm, student musicians from Mexico’s La Escuela de Música del Estado de Hidalgo, play huapango music for the Day of the Dead Celebration.

The Penn Museum’s Mexico and Central America Gallery features art and artifacts from the ancient Maya and other pre-Hispanic cultures of the region. Dr. Elin Danien, a consulting scholar in the Museum’s American Section and an expert on the ancient Maya, leads a Culinary Expeditions gallery tour, “Delicious, and Good for You!” exploring some principal Maya foods and cooking techniques. The tour departs from the Kamin Main Entrance at 1:30 pm.

October 23, 2014 9:00 PM to 2:00 AM Bal Poussiere at Gojjo

What? Isn't Coleman deep in a hyperbolic chamber somewhere in the Rockies attempting to cure a questionable wrist disease that threatens to derail his entire career? Isn't Cindy taking a break from encouraging ethanol-fused debauchery to hone her skills as a spiritual healer?

Yes. But they are taking a break to throw a party to see your bright faces.

Please join us for the second installment of Bal Poussière at Gojjo in West Philly.

For those who may have missed out last time:

Bal Poussière? Ball pussy air? What the fuck is that? It’s French, baby. Better yet, it’s West African French for dustball — and it’s a playful term for epic village-wide dance parties where people dance so hard that they raise the fucking earth. The dancing is just better there — Cindy & Coleman have seen it with their own eyes — because dancing = shedding your finite mortal body to be part of a collective pulsating (grinding?) whole. So come out for the night: ditch your crippling self-awareness, quit your job and join the euphoric masses losing themselves to dust.
