April 1, 2017 8:00PM An Evening of Brazilian Choro Guitar Music at Rittenhouse Soundworks

CHORO GUITAR TRIO FROM RIO DE JANEIRO
The guitar trio celebrates the works of two of Brazil’s most important composer-musicians,Radamés Gnattali (1906-1988) and Pixinguinha (1897-1973), who together defined the changing sounds and language of Brazilian instrumental music. Gnattali is considered by many the next most important Brazilian art music composer after Heitor Villa-Lobos. Working as a composer, radio arranger, and pianist, in both art and popular music, Gnattali inspired a generation of Brazil’s most famous instrumentalists, including Garoto, Jacob do Bandolim, and Raphael Rabello. Pixinguinha, in turn, is considered the father of Brazilian music, having influenced the birth and growth of Brazil’s two most characteristic genres, siblings samba and choro. From his time to ours, his massive output as a composer continues to dominate Brazilian instrumental music jam sessions around the world. The trio’s proud celebration and dissemination of this unique cultural heritage comes through in its original arrangements for 6- and 7-string guitars.
RICARDO PEIXOTO with DUO VIOLAO BRASIL
Born in Rio de Janeiro, guitarist, composer, and arranger Ricardo Peixoto came to the U.S. by way of a scholarship to Boston’s Berklee College of Music, and later settled in the San Francisco Bay Area. His fluid melodic sense and original harmonic approach place him among the top representatives of Brazilian guitar in the US today.

Duo Violão Brasil
NOTHING IS MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN A GUITAR, SAVE PERHAPS TWO. – FREDRIC CHOPIN
Duo Violão Brasil is the result of guitarists Rogério Souza and Edinho Gerber's reverence for Brazilian guitar, the “violão”, and their desire to explore and expand the musical possibilities of putting two “violões" together. With repertoire from composers like Pixinguinha, Baden Powell, and Tom Jobim, the duo navigates effortlessly through the many styles of 20th century Brazilian popular music while showcasing original works and inventive arrangements.

March 24, 2017 7:30-10:00PM Cecilia Zabata at Cheltenham Art Center

We had such a blast playing with Cecilia last time, that we thought we'd add one final concert to her US tour from Argentina. She returns to the US from Argentina every two years for a wild series of concerts. Her compositions are playfully haunting, the kind that stay in your head and keep you from sleep. Her guitar playing is worldclass--she first toured the states as part of the prestigious International Guitar Tour! And her singing is the perfect vehicle for her musical thoughts. Her music blends Argentinian folklore, contemporary jazz and classical into a rich amalgam of emotion, technique and intuition.

Tonight she'll be joined by Kevin MacConnell, who has performed with such jazz legends as Mel Torme, Nancy Wilson, Billy Ecstine, Joe Williams, local superheros The Jost Project,
Natalie Cole and opera diva, Denyce Graves.

Ken Ulansey, on soprano and alto sax, is a Penn Council for the Arts winner. He has played classical music with Relache at Lincoln Center, Brazilian with Minas, jazz with his own award-winning band and folk music with countless local and national luminaries, all while leading his "Best of Philly" wedding band.

On drums will be Conner Setzer, who's brilliance in groove, drive and sensitivity has been capturing the attention of the Philly music community.

Tickets are only $12 in advance at https://whirledmusic.ticketleap.com/cz/details; $20 at the door, $15 for students.

Maciek Lasserre, soprano saxophone
Carlos Homs, piano and keyboards
Drew Gress, bass
Damion Reid, drums

Ars Nova Workshop and Painted Bride Art Center are pleased to present inventive saxophonist Steve Lehman’s Sélébéyone, an idiom-spanning new project combining modern jazz, underground hip-hop, Senegalese rap and live electronics to create a unique form of urban experimentalism.

Lehman’s music has always drawn from disparate sources in distinctive ways, but with Sélébéyone he has crafted a singular new crossing of musical streams. The project stands apart from past attempts to meld jazz and hip-hop, with the hybrid’s musical elements - shifting rhythms, electro-acoustic harmonies, and contemporary sound design - wholly integrated into the lyrical content. The project, which also juxtaposes English and Wolof lyrics, is not Lehman’s first plunge into the world of hip-hop; his acclaimed octet has recorded arrangements of songs by the Wu-Tang Clan and Camp Lo, while he has enjoyed a variety of collaborations with Meshell Ndegeocello since 2004.

March 21, 2017 8:00-11:00 PM Gregorio Uribe w/ guest Bronson Tennis at World Cafe Live

Singer, songwriter and accordionist, Gregorio Uribe was born in Colombia and currently resides in New York. Emerging as a graduate from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Uribe has forged a unique place in the music scene in both the United States and Latin America. Also leading the Gregorio Uribe Big Band, a 16-piece orchestra that blends cumbia and other Colombian rhythms with powerful big band arranging, Uribe released "Cumbia Universal" (Zoho Music) featuring 8-time GRAMMY-winner and Latin music icon Rubén Blades, in October 2015, Upon its release the album hit the Billboard charts and received widespread critical acclaim with sold-out performances in prestigious venues such as Jazz at Lincoln Center.

Most recently, the multi-faceted Uribe put together a smaller ensemble that highlights his songwriting and the presence of the accordion. This new format differs from the big band in its more compact size and organic style. However it stays true to its leader's danceable rhythm. Having introduced this new music in latest tour, which included Brown University, Gregorio Uribe is currently in the process of recording his next self-composed album.

Gregorio has been a guest artist with Latin icon Carlos Vives on several occasions including Madison Square Garden. He was also named by the government of Colombia as one of the "100 most successful Colombians abroad"
