*The class starts with a 30-minute warm up that exercises basic isolation of the body, following by stretching and strengthening exercises. After the warm up, Angelica introduces the students samba no pé (basic samba step) and passo marcado (simple choreographies) typical of the Rio Carnaval. The whole class happens in the sound of the upbeat and irresistible Brazilian music.

*About the Instructor: Angelica Cassimiro is a freelance Dance Artist, Performer, Instructor and Choreographer. She has a BFA in Dance Education from the University of the Arts and is a member of Actor's Equity Association. Her competencies in performance, choreography and instruction include: Classical Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Contemporary, Samba, Hip Hop, Salsa and African Dance. Angelica just completed a 10month contract dancing with Disney Cruiselines and is back to teaching and performing with both PhillyBloco and Alo Brasil.

In honor of Black History Month, Raíces' February Tertulia will highlight the African roots in Cuba's culture. The Tertulia presents Afro-Cuban music and dance.
Dorthy Wilkie, Artistic Director of the dance and drum ensemble group Kùlú Mèlé, will talk about Afro-Cuban dance Orisa and provide a demonstration.
Dorthy has studied a large repertoire of African and African Diasporas dance starting at the beginning of her formal career in 1955. She studies the genre as both an art form and an aspect of her spiritual practice as an Orisa devotee and initiate.
Elizabeth Sayre, the Program Specialist at the Philadelphia Music Project, will discuss Afro-Cuban percussion during the event, while the performance group Timbalona provides the percussion rhythms.
Elizabeth is a musician and ethnomusicologist. As a percussionist, Elizabeth has apprenticed with masters in Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and West African drumming in Philadelphia; New York; Middletown, Connecticut; San Francisco; and Havana, Matanzas, Cienfuegos, and Santiago in Cuba.
Timbalona is a folkloric Latin American dance and music group located in Philadelphia established in 2011. Andrés Cisneros from Venezuela, George "Pupy" Castellanos from Cuba,
and Christian Noguera from Argentina form the group. Timbalona's mission is to create awareness for and promote Afro-Cuban art through classes, workshops, and presentations. The group has provided Rumba classes at Raíces Talentos Studio and will begin registration for Orisa classes beginning in March.
A brief presentation will be made by the Headlong Theater during the Tertulia to introduce the "This Town is a Mystery" project that Raíces is partnering with the theater company to produce.
The same evening, Raíces will present the exhibit "Voces y Colores" [Voices and Colors] featuring Colombian artist Erika Gomez Henao. Erika paints the people and vivid landscapes that she remembers from her childhood on the Pacific coast of Colombia. She is currently studying art at Community College of Philadelphia and is working for the Mural Arts Program. Erika is no stranger to Raíces, as she was one of several artists who participated in a Phoenixville exhibit coordinated by Raíces. Her artwork will be on display at Raíces from February 24- March 2012.
On the last Friday of the month, Raíces presents a Tertulia. This event - for people over 15 years of age - is one of Raíces' most popular programs and presents monthly lectures and discussions on cultural topics. During each Tertulia, after the invited guests' presentation and open public discussions, the microphone is opened to any individual or group who would like to share their talents in music, poetry, dance, etc. Raíces calls this cultural encounter in the café atmosphere "a retreat for the soul."
Please note, much of the speaking is in Spanish, but English translation will be available.

Imagine Africa Free Community Day
Drums African music, dance, and diverse cultures take center stage on Saturday, February 18, from 10 am to 5 pm (with special programming from 1 to 4 pm), when the Penn Museum offers a free community day, part of the ongoing Imagine Africa with the Penn Museum gallery project and public programming initiative that runs through January 2013.
Philadelphia radio station 100.3 WRNB is sponsor of the free day, and on air personality Lady B broadcasts live from the Penn Museum between 11 am and 2 pm. Guests will also enjoy performances by the Women's Sekere Ensemble and the Neo-African Drums 'n Dance ensemble from La Salle University. Special guest presenters from seven African countries join the afternoon with show and tell tables, sharing information about their countries' cultures and traditions and providing related activities geared to families. Members of AFRICOM, the Coalition of African Communities in Philadelphia, share information about Liberia (Mr. Wayétu Moore) and Ghana (Dr. Samuel Quartey). Dr. Mary Osirim, a Sociology professor at Bryn Mawr College and co-editor of Global Philadelphia, Immigrant Communities Old and New, talks about her book, which includes a chapter she authored on the city's African community.
Museum admission is free all day. Bring the whole family for this celebration of African culture!

Pablo Elliot Foster, the son of Cuban and Puerto Rican immigrants, narrates Cuban Roots/Bronx Stories. After his father returns to Cuba for the first time after 33 years in the US, Pablo decides to explore his own Afro-Latino identity. Pablo’s guides are his father, aunt, and uncle, who emigrated from Cuba as children in1962. Cuban Roots/Bronx Stories is the visual autobiography of one family that confronts questions of diaspora, class, immigration and identity.

Saxophonist/composer Marco Pignataro is a member of the Eddie Gomez Quintet and the leader of the Marco Pignataro Jazzet. He has performed with Danilo Pérez, Arturo Sandoval, and Paquito D’Rivera, among others. With Pérez, he leads the Berklee Global Jazz Institute at Berklee College of Music, Boston.
