July 20, 2012 8:00-11:55 PM Samba for the Soul with PhillyBloco!

Samba for the Soul Featuring the Brazilian rhythms and dance of Philly Bloco. Bring your boogie shoes and your best friends and be prepared to party for a cause in support of BuildaBridge's after school and summer arts education programs, which bring hope and healing to Philadelphia's children living in transition. Just over half of the repertoire is Brazilian music, sung in Portuguese – the fun, rhythmic, danceable style made famous by Carnaval in Brazil. They also perform songs by a variety of popular artists (such as Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley and Dr John) that we've adapted to Brazilian rhythms (a great example is our version of "Superstition.") With these songs, the band can connect with an American audience for whom Brazilian music may be new. Before long, the whole crowd is grooving to samba beats. Since the band launched in 2008, PhillyBloco has really taken off in Philadelphia and beyond. Over the past three years the band has sold out multiple shows at World Cafe Live (Downstairs, capacity 700) and the Blockley Pourhouse, played a packed house at the Trocadero, were featured on WMMR's Preston and Steve Show, and performed for over 1000 people in Verizon Hall as part of the Kimmel Center's Solstice Event. In August PhillyBloco played a third consecutive year at The Bethlehem Musikfest, and most recently played a sold out New Year's Eve Bash at World Cafe Live (a venue that often features national acts). Furthermore, they are expanding their reach and fan-base into New York City through regular performances at Drom, in The East Village. Friday, July 20th, 2012. at The Irish Center In Philadelphia (The Commodore Barry Club) 6815 Emlen Street Philadelphia, PA 19119 (Across from the R8 Carpenter Lane Septa Station) Friday, July 20th, 2012 Doors open at 8:00 p.m. Show starts at 9:30 p.m. cash bar, lite fare, door prizes Tickets: $40 in advance $45 at the door PhillyBloco Brazilian Music to Shake your Body and Soul Featuring a core of 13 drummers, PhillyBloco's 23 members blend Brazilian rhythms with vocals, bass, and guitar plus a horn section, accordion, violin, keyboard and samba dancers. The show is a raucous mash-up of samba, funk, reggae, and New Orleans 2nd-line. Their versatility enables them to take any genre of music and put a high-energy, extremely danceable Brazilian groove behind it.
