A Tale of Two Nations brings traditional maracatu to the U.S. for the first time for an unprecedented collaboration with Scott Kettner's New York-based Nation Beat, which blends maracatu with southern American musical traditions—New Orleans second line, funk, and country blues. ‎

PhillyBloco is modeled after the blocos of Rio de Janeiro, with their large percussion sections and harmonic/vocal accompaniment. Our group is comprised of twelve drummers, electric guitar, bass guitar, vocals, horn section, accordion, and Brazilian dancers. The group performs a raucous mash-up of SAMBA, FUNK, REGGAE and more made popular by both Brazilian and non-Brazilian artists including: Olodum, Timbalada, Monobloco, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder. The one constant in all of our music is a heavy percussive element (12 drummers!) that we use to explore the tremendous range of Brazilian rhythms, applying our own unique creativity and energy to each arrangement.

Our music is extremely high energy, full of passion and feeling. We want to make people dance, feel good, and give them something to celebrate every time they see us perform!

July 13, 2013 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Lenny Seidman's Rhythm Lab

Lenny Seidman's Rhythm Lab:

A Workshop for Drummers of any Tradition

Saturday, July 13, 2013 - 10:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. $20.00

1012 E Southampton Ave - Wyndmoor, PA 19038

To Sign Up - Contact Ron at ron@musicinthemoment.com or 215 233 0777

The goal of this introductory workshop is to expand the participants' ability to both improvise and create their own rhythmic patterns in an ensemble situation.

Lenny Seidman, tabla player/composer and co director of award winning Spoken Hand Percussion Orchestra, has developed his teaching approach synthesizing years of tabla studies with the legendary Zakir Hussain, his work with master South Indian violinist Adrian L'Armand, and his 17 year history with Spoken Hand.

Beginning with the “Universe of One”, Lenny will explore with the participants the vast interior world of just one beat as a template for the bigger picture. Initially we will utilize clapping and recitation of the Sanskrit rhythm syllables used in the North and South Indian drumming traditions. We will play them on whatever drum you have with special attention paid to the melodic and dynamic components of rhythm. We will broaden this out to include the use of space, poly rhythms and ensemble playing.

July 13, 2013 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM ¡¡Tropicalismo Returns!! @ Black Box w/ SONIDO MARTINES (Bolivia)

Tropicalismo massive, we're back and coming at you LIVE this Saturday (Facebook event page HERE) with a very special guest --

Perched 13,000 feet above sea level, the Bolivian capital, La Paz, is not for the faint of lungs. For Sonido Martines, it's the high-altitude base camp for his continental excursions to dig up rare cumbia, chicha, and sonidera vinyls from across Latin America. Prowling back-alley record shops and massive street markets, Sonido Martines collects rare groove gems from Buenos Aires, Lima, Bogotá, and Mexico City, and is known for turning classic and obscure cumbias alike into dancefloor bangers.
His tastemaking talent led to the groundbreaking 2009 compilation, Sonido Martines Presenta: Nueva Cumbia Argentina, The Buenos Aires Implosion! on Soot Records. More recently, in February 2013, he went head-to-head with DJ /rupture on 2200 vs. 1100, a cumbia mixtape available in its entirely only at a single New York City taqueria, a wild throwback in the age of digital distribution.

Now, for his first time in Philly, Sonido Martines will join the Tropicalismo DJs -- your tried'n'true duo of Juanderful and Gregzinho -- for a night of tropical grooves on Saturday, July 13 inside The Black Box at Underground Arts, the city’s “best new venue” according to the Philadelphia City Paper.

>>>It's been far too long since we've had a proper Tropicalismo party and so we want to treat YOU, the ones who work it out with us on the dance floor from Walnut Room to Fluid to Dahlak Paradise to the Night Market. Just hit us back at this e-mail address tropicalismo.philly@gmail.com with your name and you plus a guest will be on a special $3 list until midnight.<<< Tropicalismo Returns Sonido Martines (Bolivia) Residents: Juanderful and Gregzinho The Black Box @ Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St. 10 pm – 2 am, 21+ $7 cover, or $5 until midnight with **RSVP**

J. Michael Harrison Presents Soweto Kinch
Commonwealth Plaza
Wednesday, July 3 8pm

Get your groove on at Sittin' In! Commonwealth Plaza is host to an eclectic mix of horns, vinyl, and vocals. Each month we bring you a different session featuring a special guest host, alongside their band of choice.

Award winning alto-saxophonist and MC Soweto Kinch is one of the most exciting and versatile young musicians in both the British jazz and hip hop scenes. Undoubtedly, one of the few artists in either genre with a degree in Modern History from Oxford University he has amassed an impressive list of accolades and awards on both sides of the Atlantic - including a Mercury Music Prize nomination, two UMA Awards and a MOBO for best Jazz Act in 2003. In October 2007, he won his second MOBO Award, at the O2 Arena, London where he was announced as the winner in the Best Jazz Act category- fending off stiff competition from the likes of Wynton Marsalis. His skills as a hip hop MC and producer have also garnered him recognition in the urban music world: having supported the likes of KRS ONE, Dwele and TY, and being championed by the likes of Mos Def, Rodney P and BBC 1-Xtra's Twin B.

J. Michael Harrison first ventured into radio as a result of being frustrated with the lack of progressive, diverse, and adventurous music on the airwaves. His first program, Is That Jazz?, debuted on West Philly based WPEB in 1993 and ran for more than three years. Mike joined WRTI in 1994 and The Bridge, which is a local forum for progressive music and poetry, began in1996. Music is Michael's sanctuary, and a kind of therapy for him. "Music is a passion," he explains, " a reason to live, and a bright moment." Philadelphia Magazine awarded The Bridge its 2002 Best of Philly prize for "Best Radio Program." Mike can be heard on Fridays from 10 pm to 2 am.

As always, we welcome our resident turntablist and recent Redbull Thre3style DJ battle victor, DJ Phsh!
