August 23, 2013 6:00-8:00 PM Gina Chavez at The Barnes Foundation

Gina Chavez

From Afro Taino Productions:
"Plucking her custom-built charango, Gina Chavez sets the mood for lyrical scenery, but it's the folkloric "Embrujo" of her voice that sears the memory. With a vocal punch strong enough to back The Kills on their 10-year anniversary tour and striking enough to make her one of National Public Radio's eight "New Latin Artists Playing SXSW," Chavez is building toward the Fall 2013 release of her sophomore album, “up.rooted”, produced by Michael Ramos (Patty Griffin, John Mellancamp, The BoDeans, The Rembrandts). Following appearances with Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Grupo Fantasma, and Del Castillo, Chavez was asked to represent the City of Austin on tour twice in Japan as the official Music Ambassador, and was voted The Austin Chronicle's Best Latin Traditional artist of 2012-13. She is back from eight months of mission work in El Salvador and established a college scholarship fund for girls she lived with in a gang-dominated part of San Salvador. Southern Living and Olay named Chavez one of 11 "southern iconic women who have left a beautiful footprint across the South." Join us as Gina Chavez makes her Philadelphia debut as part of the ongoing multicultural programming partnership between AfroTaino Productions & the Barnes Foundation."

August 15, 2013 Live Connections: A Program that Creates Musical Opportunities for City Students

LiveConnections creates innovative, boundary-crossing music programming and education out of partner venue World Cafe Live. Through live concerts, interactive programs for youth and video technology, LiveConnections commissions artists from different genres to highlight how music crosses cultures and to reimagine the landscape of live music.
In 2008, when Live Connections was formed, World Café Live's David Bradley explained its mission:
"We're looking to figure out how artists can come from their backgrounds and traditions, meet other artists, and by working together - often for the first time - right in front of kids, kind of stimulate this idea of crossing perspectives, of being open to something different from your own experience."

"The real opportunity is to cross boundaries and to break open genres so that young people, who have an immediate affinity for music, can not form silos in their head that 'this instrument belongs here, this musical form belongs there, and I belong in this place and I don't belong there.'"

Live Connections is celebrating its fifth year on October 1, 2013. It has been opening the minds of not only kids, but adults with special needs in those five years. You can help this to continue by donating or buying a ticket to their October 1st anniversary party, Live Connections Fifth.

We hope you will join us that evening at 8pm for a special student recital featuring all 12 students and a drumset duet by Eric Slick and John Kimock. To Sign Up - Contact Ron at ron@musicinthemoment.com or 215 233 0777

This workshop is a continuation of Rhythm Lab presented on July 13, 2013.

Lenny Seidman, tabla player/composer and co director of award winning Spoken Hand Percussion Orchestra, has developed his teaching approach synthesizing years of tabla studies with the legendary Zakir Hussain, his work with master South Indian violinist Adrian L'Armand, and his 17 year history with Spoken Hand.

Beginning with the “Universe of One”, Lenny will explore with the participants the vast interior world of just one beat as a template for the bigger picture. Initially we will utilize clapping and recitation of the Sanskrit rhythm syllables used in the North and South Indian drumming traditions. We will play them on whatever drum you have with special attention paid to the melodic and dynamic components of rhythm. We will broaden this out to include the use of space, poly rhythms and ensemble playing.
