Black Uhuru was the leading second generation reggae vocal groups, and was formed in Jamaica in 1974 by Euvin "Don Carlos" Spencer, Rudolph "Garth" Dennis, and Derrick "Duckie" Simpson. These three grew up in the famed "Waterhouse" district of Kingston, Jamaica (a hot bed for reggae artists over the years). After a couple of years the group as it was originally known grew apart as Don Carlos went on to a solo career, and Garth Dennis went on to sing with another of the great Waterhouse group, the Wailing Souls. Duckie Simpson continued to work under the Black Uhuru name (Uhuru means Freedom in the Swahili language of Africa), and he enlisted an up and coming singer, Michael Rose, and Errol "Jay's Wilson to record the "Love Crisis" album with producer Prince Jammys (then a protege of the famed pioneering reggae producer, King Tubbys). One of the best known best tracks from this album, "I Love King Selassie," has survived to become a bonafide reggae anthem. This Black Sounds of Freedom album is a remixing of the Love Crisis album and was eventually released in the UK in 1980 on the Greensleeves label. After that period, American expatriate, Sandra "Puma" Jones, joined Michael and Duckie to add haunting high harmonies to the group, and Black Uhuru joined forces with Sly and Robbie, releasing some the best reggae music of the 1980's and were the first group to win a Grammy award when the Reggae category was introduced in 1985. Michael Rose left the group for a solo career in the late 80's and another young "Waterhouse" area singer Junior Reid joined the group for three years starting in1986. Puma Jones passed away in 1990, and about that same time the original three members Don, Garth, and Duckie joined together one again to record and tour throughout the early and mid-Nineties. Black Uhuru continues today under the direction of Duckie Simpson and with another "Waterhouse" product named Andrew Bees. Black Sounds of Freedom is a crucial album that showcased the raw power of Reggae groups in the Rockers period of Jamaican music in the late 70's, and is one of the cornerstone albums that is laid in Reggae music's foundation.

ABOUT MESTRE VALMIR
Mestre Valmir started Capoeira in the Group of Capoeira Angola Pelourinho (GCAP) in 1982 with Mestre Moraes and Mestre Cobra Mansa. In 1994, he left GCAP and, in 1996, he started the International Capoeira Angola Foundation (ICAF) group in Salvador, FICA-Bahia, where he lives. He received the title of Master of Capoeira Angola at the IX International Conference of Capoeira Angola, organized by ICAF in Belo Horizonte in 2003. He leads socio-cultural work in Salvador and conducts Capoeira Angola workshops in various countries including the United States, Germany, France, Sweden, England, and several cities in Brazil.
ABOUT CAPOEIRA ANGOLA:
Capoeira Angola is a dance fight, a playful sparring involving style, wit, flexibility and strategy. Capoeira weaves intricate movements, spirituality, mental and physical discipline, fight, and philosophy into a unique "game".
As an African-Brazilian art form, it was used by enslaved Africans to combat the colonial oppression of the Portuguese rulers. Its practitioners used this powerful weapon during revolts and in defense of the Quilombos (African communities/nations of formally enslaved Africans who organized according to African cultural forms). It is very rhythmic and ritualistic, and like many other African based traditions, is transmitted from master to student.
Played in a circle, the "roda" (game) of Capoeira Angola is infinitely varied with an unlimited combination of movements of all parts of the body. This art form is beautiful to watch, featuring acrobatics, choreographed rituals and varied dance steps.
ABOUT FICA PHILADELPHIA:
FICA Philadelphia is a non-profit organization which represents the local chapter of the Fundaçao Internacional de Capoeira Angola (FICA) -in English: the International Capoeira Angola Foundation (ICAF). This organization is headed by world-renowned mestres of Capoeira Angola: Mestre Cobra Mansa, Mestre Jurandir, and Mestre Valmir, and includes over 30 chapters and affiliate groups in 16 countries worldwide. FICA Philadelphia is managed locally by President Kamau Blakney.
As Capoeira Angola synthesizes movement, rhythm, and African-Brazilian history into an artistic form of self-expression, it serves as a unique tool that promotes harmony with others and allows for individual growth. In the past we have given demonstrations, held workshops, hosted a conference, and taught children's classes in order to expose local communities to Capoeira Angola. In our efforts to accomplish our mission, we continue to search for opportunities in which we can make Capoeira Angola visible and accessible to these communities.
OUR MISSION:
In 1993, the founding members of our chapter introduced classes in the Philadelphia area to spread the rich heritage of the martial art form known as Capoeira Angola. Since then, FICA Philadelphia has dedicated itself to establishing a strong base in this region while supporting local community development. We work to foster community growth and enrichment through the preservation of the Capoeira Angola tradition and African history throughout Philadelphia and its regions.

In 2002, Clay Ross embarked on a musical odyssey that brought him closer to home. The South Carolina native moved to New York to pursue a jazz career and several years later found himself in Recife, Brazil studying the region’s folkloric music. Along the way he rediscovered the straightforward songs of his native South.
The guitarist and singer titled his Ropeadope Records debut Matuto, after a Brazilian slang reference to a man from the backcountry. Described as “Weird and Wonderful… Unorthodox and Delightful” by Jazz Times Magazine, the set allows Ross to carve a niche in a musical tradition created on another continent. He performs North American folk songs like “Home Sweet Home” and Blind Willie Johnson’s “John the Revelator” over South American rhythms Maracatu, Forró, and Coco typical of the northeastern region of Brazil.

The exciting sounds of Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 come to life!
One can expect to hear hits such as Mais Que Nada, Pretty World, Upa Neguinho, Fool on the Hill, Like a Lover, Night and Day, Tristeza, The Look of Love, and others, including one of the few songs Mendes and Brasil 66‘s lead singer Lani Hall wrote together, the beautiful and lush So Many Stars.
Indicated for 3 Grammy Awards with the latest CD Bossa Nova Day, Minas was very much influenced by Brasil 66 in the early days. The group will be performing Sergio’s arrangements, as well as providing a taste of the original Brazilian/Portuguese version of most songs. Orlando Haddad and Patricia King formed Minas in 1978 at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. They proceeded to play all over the eastern United States before moving to Brazil, where they lived, entertained and traveled, absorbing the essence of Brazilian culture. In 1984 Orlando and Patricia returned to the United States and raised a family while performing and recording extensively, building their reputation as one of the most sought-after Brazilian groups of its kind.
