Internationally renowned Israeli-American clarinetist, saxophonist, and composer Oran Etkin has performed around the world with varied musicians, including Wyclef Jean and Mike Stern, as well as with his own award-winning jazz and world music groups. Etkin's diverse background and wealth of musical experience are incorporated into his acclaimed children's program, Timbalooloo, in which the instruments come to life and speak through their music, enriching kids’ innate musicality and broadening their cultural and historical awareness. His record Wake Up, Clarinet! was named best children's album at the Interactive Media Awards.

1:50-2:35 pm Dance performance by Kulu Mele
Kulu Mele, an African dance and drum ensemble, explores Senegal's dance traditions with Lingin, a centuries-old folk dance performed to celebrate the harvest season and promote the fertility of the land and its people. Kulu Mele commissioned renowned Senegalese choreographer Marie Basse-Wiles to reinterpret this dance.

2:35-2:40 pm Talk by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern Pennsylvania
As the nation’s largest donor- and volunteer-supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (Bigs) and children aged 6–18 (Littles) in communities across the country.

2:40-3:25 pm Performance by Project Capoeira
Capoeira is a unique Afro-Brazilian art form that combines dance, gymnastics, self-defense, music, and the Portuguese language. The capoeiristas who practice this art appear to defy gravity as they jump, flip, spin, and cartwheel through the air. Capoeira embodies an ideal, disciplined mindset and gives a rhythm to the lives of capoieristas. Project Capoeira is the only non-profit organization dedicated to bringing capoeira to the Philadelphia region.

October 4, 2015 10:00 AM to Approx. 4:00 PM Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade

Concilio’s Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade is the “Crown Jewel” of the Puerto Rican Festival every year. It is one of the first ethnic parades to ever be televised in Philadelphia. In addition to the hundreds of people gathered on the parkway, the parade continues to offer a live televised portion for an additional 96,000 viewers who tune in for a vibrant display of cultural pride. Youth groups, community organizations, local and regional schools, corporate sponsors, popular artists and many others across the tri‐state region participate in making this parade a true showcase of Puerto Rican and Latino Culture.
The World Meeting of Families and the Papal Visit have impacted many Philadelphia events this year, the Puerto Rican Day Parade among them.

Normally scheduled for the last Sunday in September, the parade has been moved to Sunday, October 4, 2015, beginning at 10 a.m. – earlier than last year. The route has also changed: the parade will begin in downtown Philadelphia at 16th and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and will Grand Stand at Logan’s Square.

After the parade, all are welcome to festivals hosted by our city and state officials at American Street and Lehigh Avenue.

Please be aware that Philadelphia Police will be working with Concilio to monitor and maintain the area, as they have in the past. Any illegal block parties should be reported to the police

Born out of street jams in Rittenhouse Square in 2005, Trinidelphia has expanded to become Philadelphia’s preeminent Caribbean music ensemble. The name itself summarizes the mission of the band: to bring a unique Philadelphia twist to the steel drum music of Trinidad. Bandleader Chris Aschman (steelpan) is joined by Shawn Hennessey (vocals, guitar, percussion) to create a front line that can get any audience moving and grooving to the music. Ian Rafalak (bass) and Joe Truglio (drums) form the rhythm section, which can handle a range of rhythmic styles, such as soca, calypso, reggae, afro-cuban, ska, samba, funk, jazz... and the list goes on! They have performed at world-renowned venues such as the Kimmel Center's Verizon Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Blue Note. October 3, 2015 8:00 PM Edmar Castaneda Trio with Andrea Tierra at the Painted Bride Art Center

Colombian-born jazz harpist Edmar Castaneda has developed a reputation among critics as a virtuoso, known for playing lead, rhythm, and bass with just one instrument and his two hands.

“His music draws on the traditional joropo music of the grasslands he absorbed early, as well as tango, Brazilian and flamenco guitar, West African kora and virtuoso jazz pianists like Art Tatum. That’s a fascinating mix, but his technique is the real astonishment. Castañeda juggles lead, rhythm and bass lines, using a variety of hard and soft string attacks to keep those voices distinct — all without giving up the groove.” – NPR Music
On October 3rd, Castaneda plays the Bride for the first time.

Castaneda’s journey has humble, inspiring beginnings. The son of a musician, Castaneda grew up embracing the noble folkloric traditions of his native Colombia. The joropo dance classes he attended with his sister were a masterclass in movement, accompanied by the harp. In the mid-1990s, he moved to New York and studied jazz trumpet, before returning to the harp. Today, on stages all over the world, the harpist crafts almost unbelievable feats of cross- rhythms, layered with chordal nuances to rival even the most celebrated flamenco guitarists, and an incredible blend of musical influences.

In addition to his acclaimed performing career as an instrumentalist, which has included features at D’Rivera’s Carnegie Hall tribute, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Tanglewood Jazz Festival, the 10th annual World Harp Congress, he has also played with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, John Scofield, Marcos Miller, John Patitucci, Chico O’Farrill ‘s Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band and Edmar Castaneda has gained recognition as a composer.

September 29, 2015 Last Day to Apply for Philly Drum Project's "Rhythm Sessions" Free After-School Drumming

Philly Drum Project is very pleased to announce its pilot program of Rhythm Sessions, a weekly after-school program held in partnership with The Village of Arts & Humanities in North Philly. The 10-week program kicks off on October 2nd at 4pm. We're accepting applications for students now through Tuesday, 9/29 and we need your help to get the word out to students in grades 7 - 12 who are interested in studying drumset with some amazing instructors (Marcus Myers, Spanky McCurdy, Tre Lambert, Chuck Treece)! The program will also have a mentorship component, with older, more experienced students acting as mentors to the less experienced students to develop leadership skills and to offer input on drum skills and life skills. The program is designed to teach the foundational rhythms of a variety of musical styles and genres and their application to the drumset for live performance as well as contemporary music production. The goals of Rhythm Sessions are to help students develop drumming knowledge and skills with a focus on Philly-prominent popular music styles, to support students through social skill development such as leadership, teamwork, and self efficacy, and to provide an arts-based learning experience that has tangible applications to varying careers and gigs in music.

On October 30th, 2015, Marie Incontrera and her Eco-Music Big Band will be in Philadelphia to perform their new program COLORS OF RESISTANCE at The Painted Bride Art Center. You do not want to miss their first appearance here. While you buy your tickets and mark your calendars for the big day, there is another way you can help. Fundraising is underway to make a CD of COLORS OF RESISTANCE, which will be an important part of the history of music that fights against oppression.

COLORS OF RESISTANCE: our first album!
The Eco-Music Big Band is a 15-piece, multigenerational and unique big band that that includes some of the nation's most acclaimed jazz musicians (such as bass trombonist David Taylor, drummer Zack O'Farrill, and trumpeter Adam O'Farrill). Founded by Fred Ho before his death in 2014, the Eco-Music Big Band is led by Marie Incontrera, his final composing-and-bandleading protege.

We are proud to announce the recording of our first studio album, COLORS OF RESISTANCE, this October, and we need you to help us in the final push to our goal. COLORS OF RESISTANCE features new works by up-and-coming composers Livio Almeida, Felix Del Tredici, Marie Incontrera, Albert Marques, Zack O'Farrill, and Stefan Zeniuk; celebrates the five-decade career of bass trombonist and composer David Taylor; and reimagines iconic works by the late Chinese-American composer and baritone saxophone virtuoso Fred Ho and late composer and activist Cal Massey.

COLORS OF RESISTANCE will be recorded on Halloween weekend at Peter Karl Studios in Brooklyn. We have an exciting season planned (an opera premiere at BAM Next Wave Festival; a feature on the American Composers Orchestra SONiC Festival for composers under 40; a collaboration with Hard Rubber Orchestra; and our very first Philadelphia show, among others!), and this is a necessary step in our work as an ensemble. And we need you to make it happen!

What We Need & What You Get
We are raising $5000 for our recording expenses. Funds go to:

Paying 16 musicians a fair wage for their time
Studio time (fourteen hours over two days!) and mastering time
Production and distribution costs for the album (record label costs, iTunes, Amazon)
The Impact
Our first priority is to compensate the musicians and engineers for their work on this album. We have been enjoying an exciting and vital performance schedule in New York City and throughout the Northeast, and our music aims to reach urban youth (through a dynamic collaboration with the Harlem Village Academy) and seasoned jazz lovers alike. This album, which tells a joyful story of music that comes from the tradition of resistance to oppression, provides an important outlet for important social justice causes as well as our work as professional musicians.

Risks & Challenges

The Eco-Music Big Band's biggest challenge is obtaining the funds necessary to pay for artist fees, studio time, and distribution costs.

With this crowdfunding campaign, we will secure the money needed to cover all costs for this album recording, and use our subsequent ticket proceeds and album sales to build an operating budget for future seasons and future recordings, with the additional help of foundation and government grants.

Dudu Fuentes will be returning to Philly on Sept 27th to offer a special workshop In Brazilian Bloco-Style Drumming.
This will be Dudu's third visit to Philly, and his workshops are always fun, challenging, exciting and extremely informative. Those who have studied with him in the past can attest to this.
The workshop will take place at MaMa Studio (6819 Greene St, Philadelphia, PA 19119) at the normal Unidos Class time: 12:30pm.
The fee for this workshop is $20, and all levels of experience are welcome. Also, you do NOT need to be a current member of Unidos to attend.
About Dudu Fuentes:
Master percussionist Eduardo “Dudu” Fuentes is one of Rio de Janeiro’s foremost percussionists, and a very popular instructor at California Brazil Camp which is held every year in Cazadero, California. As former director and principal arranger of the popular Carnaval bloco, Bangalafumenga, Dudu is recognized for creating percussion arrangements that have breathed new life into Brazilian rhythms. Dudu’s unique style of adapting folkloric Brazilian rhythms like ciranda, côco, maculelê and ijexá for samba bateria instruments has taken him around the world teaching workshops in Europe, Asia and the United States.

Formerly a member and teacher for the award-winning group, Monobloco, Dudu currently teaches and arranges for his new bloco, Batucalacatuca (BaTUcalacaTUca). He also is part of Du Rio, a band created along with other members of Monobloco. When Dudu is not working with his blocos, he parades in the baterias of various Rio samba schools including São Clemente, Imperio Serrano and Portela.

They are a 5 piece band featuring bass guitarist Brenton Oakley, keyboardist Gabe Tate, drummer Dwaine Ross and last but not least artists/founders Freddie Foolay & Lucas.

School of Rock, "With locations in Fort Washington, Center City, Berwyn, Newtown, and Downingtown, The School of Rock is the world-wide leader in after-school music education. We believe the best way to learn music is to play music. We take students from the lesson room to the stage, developing both their confidence and musicianship with programs designed for all skill levels. This Month - Ancient Sri Lankan Sinhala Buddhist Rhythms and Their Applications on the Western Drumset -
Sri Lanka's musical traditions are virtually unknown in world music circles today, losing out for attention to the island's northern neighbor, India. Our guest this month, Jim Sykes, has been conducting research on Sinhala Buddhist ritual drumming in Sri Lanka since 2004, with the highly secretive caste of musicians who are the only ones who know how to play this music. These rituals go on all night, and they involve upwards of ten drummers playing mind-blowing rhythms that are not fit into any kind of beat cycle or time signature. Jim will explain how this music works, show footage he shot of the rituals in rural Sri Lankan locations, and then explain how he borrowed ideas from this music for his band (with U.S. Maple's Mark Shippy), Invisible Things
Beats, Brews, & Banter is a free monthly event that gives local drummers, musicians, and wannabes a chance to network, share ideas, and learn from some of the best drummers in the area. Our guest this month, Jim Sykes, will present a lecture, videos, and a live demonstration that applies Sinhala concepts to the Western drum set, showing how Sinhala drumming is a form of sacred speech that sounds radically different from other kinds of drumming in the world.

Jim Sykes is an Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Pennsylvania, and a drummer who has played with a number of noise and experimental rock bands over the past fifteen years (Marnie Stern, Parts & Labor, Grooms, Tyondai Braxton, Boredoms' 77 Boadrum, Mark Shippy of U.S. Maple, Martin Bisi). In this talk he will present his research on Sinhala Buddhist ritual drumming from Sri Lanka, which he has been conducting since 2004.

Philly Drum Project is a percussive collective dedicated to making drumming more accessible by helping drummers in the Philadelphia area share gear, lessons, and beats. Beats, Brews, & Banter is held once a month and has featured such drummers as Eric Slick (Dr. Dog), Spanky McCurdy (Jill Scott, Lady Gaga), and Fred Berman (Amos Lee).
