December 6, 2015 6:00 PM Beats Beyond: Spoken Hand Percussion Orchestra with Special Guests at The Painted Bride Art Center
Sunday, December 6 | 6PM
Featuring the Philadelphia region’s most skilled and renowned hand drummers, Spoken Hand represents batteries from four singular music cultures: tabla (North Indian), samba drums (Brazilian), djembe (West African), and batá (Afro-Cuban). Over the past 19 years, they have fused these drumming traditions into passionate and impactful sound grounded in both traditional and contemporary drumming practices. This year, Spoken hand turns 20, and they’re bringing it in with a new series: Beats Beyond.
Guests: Josh Lawrence (trumpet), Brent White (trombone), Guilherme and Gustavo Oliveira (samba drummers from Rio), and hip hop dancers Edward Smallwood, Bryant Lee, and Yusef Young.
Spoken Hand was started in 1996 when Painted Bride Art Center commissioned Lenny Seidman and Daryl Kwasi Burgee to investigate the symphonic orchestra qualities inherent in a drumming-only orchestra. Since then, the ensemble has shared the stage with the likes of tabla master Zakir Hussain, hip hop dance legend Rennie Harris, and kora master Yacouba Sissoko, among others. In that same spirit of collaboration, each performance in the Beats Beyond series will feature Spoken Hand and a special guest, creating a rare and exhilarating musical experience.

December 1, 2015 7:00 PM "We Are Music", A Film Dedicated to Dante Bucci at World Cafe LIve PHL
"We Are Music" - A Film Dedicated to Dante Bucci
"We Are Music" - A Film Dedicated to Dante Bucci
"We Are Music" is a live music video project that began in the fall of 2014. The song was originally written by Alison Hilley and John Glaubitz for their band, AlyCat. The new version of the song incorporates the talents of over 20 Philadelphia musicians. Each player layered their part at one of a dozen unique and iconic Philadelphia locations. The film showcases the immense musical talent that our city has to offer, as well as it's visual beauty. But more importantly, the film pays tribute to a musician who is no longer with us. The original studio version of "We Are Music" features Dante Bucci playing the hang. Fortunately, we filmed him in the studio that day. We were able to use the audio and video from that original recording session in this video, so that Dante can perform with us one last time.
Please join us on Tuesday, December 1st for the premiere screening of "We Are Music." Leading up to the screening, musicians who were close with Dante will perform and share stories. Proceeds from the event will benefit Musicians On Call, an organization that meant a lot to Dante.

When guitarist Juanito Pascual was called "one of the hottest flamenco guitarists in recent years" by National Public Radio, this major accolade became a jumping off point for the Minneapolis native's musical vision. But Pascual's sound is in fact an organic blend of his mastery of traditional and contemporary flamenco ever so gently seasoned with his love of diverse musics from heroes such as Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, The Grateful Dead and J.S. Bach.

November 8, 2015 8:00 PM GINA CHAVEZ with KARIKATURA and INTERMINABLE at The Trocadero
GINA CHAVEZ
Gina Chavez
Gina Chavez is a bilingual award-winning Latin-folk singer/songwriter who blends the sounds of the Americas with tension and grace. Her latest independent release, Up.Rooted, is a passionate collection of bilingual songs traversing cumbia, bossa nova, vintage pop, reggaeton, and folk combined with dynamic vocals and sharp social commentary.
KARIKATURA
Karikatura makes life-affirming, body-shaking music that moves people around the world. While the band has toured everywhere from Japan to Brazil, New York City is home. With bright horns, socially conscious lyrics and booty-bouncing beats, Karikatura delivers real songs that transcend style and genre.
An organic synthesis of all the music heard blasting out of car windows and shops onto the streets of NYC, Karikatura lives where cumbia meets hip-hop, reggae meets klezmer and indie-rock meets afrobeat. Neither purist nor revivalist, this is music of the present, for the future.
