February 5, 2016 5:00-9:00 PM "The Avenues" Closing Reception with Ursula Rucker and Live Jazz
XST / SHAWN THEODORE ARTIST
February 5, 2016 | 5pm to 9pm
Ursula Rucker performance at 7pm
Entry Free
For the closing of Shawn Theodore’s exhibition “The Avenues” we proudly present a night of poetry, music and soul. Acclaimed poet Ursula Rucker will perform with Shawn Theodore’s band ‘The A/V/E’ lead by composer and trumpeter Jamal Jones. Rucker will perform a unique body of work inspired by the photographic works in the gallery, a specific mosaic, a composite portrait of African American Philadelphia.
Theodore’s work examines life in an ever-changing and vanishing landscape for African Americans beyond the era of The Great Migration and the Civil Rights movements of the 60’s and 70’s who are impacted by external socio-economic forces.
Moving across a stylistic continuum—reportage, editorial, portraiture street, Theodore’s work is defiant and not simply in regards to labels, but the regime of images that deny blackness its nuance and depth.
His photography underscores the notion of ‘being invisible’ to society at large by using the silhouette to express this collective state of being. His subjects are often in solitary, introspective moments — sojourning within their vanishing environments, they are often depicted in shadow and silhouette not only as a means to shield their identity or protect their privacy, but to symbolize their growing sense of invisibility, isolation and displacement when facing with these larger, transformative forces. The Philadelphia native trains his eye predominantly on his city, however he travels often to show that what he is witness to is not an isolated occurrence.
Rucker is best known for her poignant, deeply introspective, and often biographical, wordplay. When coupled with her style of delivery, a mix of song and whisper — deftly punctuated profanity decorating artistically articulated angst, her listener imbibes the entire depth of her feeling and is left, spent — and rewarded, with the emotional hangover of being let in on a deep, personal secret. She speaks from the heart, one that is not just her own, one that beats for individuals far and wide, but pulsating heavily for her hometown of Philadelphia and the experiences from there that she brings into bloom.
The duo has found a harmony within their works, and in that harmony they have found a new voice. One that puts their respective bodies of work side by side, not in a comparative fashion, but as a complement to one another and criticism of their shared environment, the city of Philadelphia. Rucker gives a voice to the floating silhouettes against brash color, and Theodore paints the visions alluded to in the spoken word. Their idioms and images find an easy kinship and balance, and this will be their first public collaboration.

February 3, 2016 6:30-9:00 PM Opening Reception for DrapetomanÃa: Grupo Antillano and the Art of Afro-Cuba
Join AAMP as we celebrate the opening of our latest special exhibition,DrapetomanÃa: Grupo Antillano and the Art of Afro-Cuba, which will be on display from January 30 to March 20, 2016. This reception is free and open to the public with a RSVP and will include music, wine and light fare for guests.
Just In: AAMP is excited to announce that DJ Rahsaan of AfroTaino Productions will provide a Afro-Cuban inspired playlist for the opening reception! Stay tuned for more information on our full suite of exhibition programs in partnership with AfroTaino! Click here for more details on DJ Rahsaan.
DrapetomanÃa is a tribute to Grupo Antillano (1978-1983), a forgotten visual arts and cultural movement that privileged the importance of African and Afro-Caribbean influences in the formation of the Cuban nation. Grupo Antillano valiantly proclaimed the centrality of African practices in national culture. The title of the exhibit, Drapetomania, makes reference to an alleged disease described in the mid-nineteenth century by a slave physician in the plantations of Louisiana.
From the Greek drapetes (escape, run away) and mania (disorder, mental illness), the main symptom of this disease was the slaves' irrepressible and pathological urge to flee and to be free. Curated by historian Alejandro de la Fuente from Harvard University, the exhibit showcases works by the artists of Grupo and of a group of contemporary artists who share some of the concerns that Grupo Antillano articulated thirty years ago.

January 28 - 30, 2016 9:00-11:00 PM Pasion Y Arte presents Tablao Philly at Asian Arts Initiative
TABLAO PHILLY
January 28-30
Asian Arts Initiative
1219 Vine Street
Philadelphia, PA
Featuring:
Special guest Almudena Serrano
Pasión y Arte
De Luna a Lunares
Pasión y Arte (PyA), Philadelphia's premier all-female flamenco dance company, is pleased to present TABLAO PHILLY, sponsored by PNC Arts Alive. Starting October 2015 and occurring quarterly, this series will take place at the Asian Arts Initiative at 1219 Vine Street. The performance will showcase unique interpretations of flamenco and wine and tapas will be served.
Reminiscent of the cafe like environment of the 18th and 19th century tablaos of Spain, TABLAO PHILLY will recreate for the first time in Philadelphia a contemporary tablao experience. Originally tablaos were comparable to beat poetry cafes or improvisational jazz clubs, where diverse audiences would gather to drink, eat and enjoy music, rhythm, and movement by masters of the flamenco art form in an informal atmosphere of merriment. Philadelphia audiences will have the unique opportunity to participate in this classic experience as the intimate black box theater of the Asian Arts Initiative is transformed into a tablao where they will enjoy wine and tapas as they witness some of today's most respected and well known flamencos exhibit their craft.
PyA is excited to continue TABLAO PHILLY into 2016 and to bring new flamenco guest artists from both Spain and the United States to Philadelphia. Visit the PyA website for upcoming guest artist announcements.
TABLAO PHILLY Performance Date/Times:
January 28, 29 and 30, 2016 at 9pm
April 28, 29 and 30, 2016 at 9pm
June 9, 10 and 11, 2016 at 9pm
Each TABLAO PHILLY performance will be 90 minutes long with two 10-minute intermissions for audiences to enjoy tapas and wine. Performances will run Thursday- Saturday from 9pm- 11pm and take place at the Asian Arts Initiative, 1219 Vine Street. For ticket information please visit www.pasionyarteflamenco.org.
