“I Got Life: The Music of Nina Simone”
The groundbreaking collaboration between Gerald Veasley and Carol Riddick “I Got Life: The Music of Nina Simone” pairs two legends of jazz and soul music to celebrate an iconic artist. The act, consisting of vocals and three instrumentalists, has performed in many festivals, jazz clubs and churches to a sold-out crowds.
“I feel more alive now that I ever in my life. I have a chance to live, as I’ve dreamed. I got Life.” Nina Simone

More than a concert, I Got Life is a an event that explores the powerful music and empowering messages of Nina Simone. The presentation moves through four aspects of Ms. Simone’s songbook: Quest, Passion, Fury and Hope. Vocalist Carol Riddick and bassist Gerald Veasley lead an ensemble that re-imagines Nina Simone’s work with inventive energy.

The Ensemble
This is a musical conversation between two seasoned artists: an accomplished jazz musician, Veasley and a fiery soul singer, Riddick. The group is rounded out by Aaron Graves, a keyboardist who served as Little Jimmy Scott's musical director and Tim Hutson, a standout musician among the new wave of drummers. Together they present the songbook in organic, dynamic arrangements that are fresh yet maintain the essence of the original versions

October 27, 2020 7:30-9:30PM Philly Drum Project's Virtual Open Drum

PDP presents our first-ever VIRTUAL OpenDrum event, where we get to hear from you, the people! The night will consist of ten 5-10 minute drum-centered presentations by musicians of all experience levels - it's like a virtual TEDx event for drummers! This event is FREE and open to anyone interested in presenting or attending as just an audience member. Zoom link will be posted here the day of the event. Please sign up to be a presenter below!!!
Sign-up to present using this form:
Presentations are limited to either:
-10 minute drum-centered presentations
-5 minute drum solos
***Please note that this event will be LIVE on Zoom. There will be a short tech rehearsal at 7PM for presenters to very quickly "sound check" their sound setups. Drums are inherently loud, especially in small practice rooms with limited sound setups. We recommend you do your own personal sound check with a mock Zoom meeting before the event. We want everybody to be able to hear what you're playing/saying. PDP members are happy to assist in any way we can if you have any questions about this kind of stuff. ***
Recommended Zoom Sound Settings:
Go to Preferences (desktop), or Settings (mobile devices- BEFORE entering a meeting). Go to Audio. Uncheck "Automatically adjust microphone volume". Change "Suppress background noise" to Low. Go to Advanced (in Audio Settings) and check "Show in-meeting option to "Enable Original Sound" from microphone". When you are in the meeting and wish to turn on "Original Audio", simply select "Turn on Original Audio" in the upper left hand corner of your zoom video screen (desktop), or go to "..." (mobile) and select "Turn on Original Audio".
It is possible to use a live mic feed from an audio interface if you want to get fancy, but we cannot offer any tech support beyond the suggestions mentioned above.
SEE YOU THERE!

Our music has always encouraged people of all races, cultures, ages, and political affiliations to put down their guns and hostilities and VOTE. This year, our lives really depend on it!

COVID-19 has made it unsafe to gather, so we'll be streaming from a studio in Tijuana into your living room
(And you can sing along as loudly as you'd like all evening!)

In these challenging times of divisive rhetoric and social strife, our music has inspired folks to re-examine the issues currently dividing people and to do something constructive about improving
human relations and social justice.
The Eighth Step and Walkabout Clearwater are pleased to join forces to present a great evening of music as we encourage voters to go to the polls in November.

Join us in 2021
This year's Transcending Barriers tour on The Peace Train in Mexico had to be canceled
because of the pandemic,
BUT GET READY TO TRAVEL WITH US FOR
AN EXTENDED TOUR IN

We'll meet in San Diego and cross the border together; see the mural-covered border wall where it extends into the ocean; meet the children and asylum seekers we work with in Tijuana; travel with the choir to perform at a festival in Tlaxcala; visit the culturally-rich region of Oaxaca where we'll have workshops with indigenous groups and perform together; explore the ancient history and modern diversity of Mexico City and more!

More Details soon!

Featured Track this week is #3:
Vamos en el Tren de la Paz
(Let’s Go on The Peace Train) by Sharon Katz

I originally wrote “Vamos en el Tren de la Paz” in 2019 for 1,500 young singers in the community arts program of our partner organization, Promotora de las Bellas Artes in Tijuana, Mexico. Singing it to an enthusiastic audience of 5,000 gave the youth that boost of confidence and opportunities which our two organizations strive to do. We then performed it together in Santiago in a collaboration featuring musicians and singers from Cuba, South Africa, Mexico, and USA. This recording is symbolic of the work I am honored to do in Latin America, bringing communities together in a spirit of respect, peace, and shared humanity.

Musicians: Sharon Katz – guitar & lead vocals; Sandra Agüéra Quesada – bass & backing vocals; Alejandro Quintana Bauste - drums; Frank E. González – trumpet, lead & backing vocals; Damián Busqueta Mineto – trombone & backing vocals; Iván Sánchez Guardiola – saxophone & backing vocals; Carlos Rafael López Bauste – percussion; Sanele Phakathi - piano and synthesizers.

Recorded by José Aquiles Virelles Rodriguez; Produced by Sharon Katz & Sandra Agüéra Quesada; Mixed and Mastered by Malcolm Nhleko

Here's link to our performance of it in Cuba:

We continue to support the children at Mama Mary's orphanage in South Africa. If you or someone you know can help, your tax-deductible contribution will be greatly appreciated, especially during this pandemic!
