September 24, 2022 8:00PM Sharon Katz and The Peace Train at City Winery

Botswana dancer Mpho Setshwane joins the band for this Philly concert and will give special dance lessons to all who want to try something new.

The multicultural South African band of Sharon Katz & The Peace Train helped Nelson Mandela end Apartheid and have continued spreading their message of peace and reconciliation through performances and workshops in festivals, educational settings and concert halls around the world.
Nominated for the Grammy’s “Best World Music Album,” the group made history in 1992 when they formed South Africa’s first, 500-voice multiracial choir and then organized a courageous tour on board a train –The Peace Train – to promote a peaceful transition to democracy. When CNN filmed Sharon jumping out of a helicopter with her guitar in a remote area, to teach the rural people about the voting process through song, Sharon Katz & The Peace Train were propelled into an international career that has spanned three continents and coast-to-coast US appearances.
Now based in the US, the versatile group of musicians, singers, dancers and workshop leaders educate and thrill audiences of all ages and sizes. Their pulsating rhythms, rich harmonies, guitar-driven maskanda and mbaqanga melodies, spine-tingling Zulu dances, funky basslines, Afro-jazz horn lines, intricate drum patterns, and compelling lyrics tell South Africa’s story - past and present.

September 16, 2022 8:00-10:00PM Al Bilali Soudan at The Rotunda

Al Bilali Soudan - an ancient name for the city of Timbuktu - present an improvisational tour de force of traditional rhythms and scales. Their style is Tehardent, the Tamasheq name for their traditional stringed instrument. A precursor of the modern banjo, the Tehardent has accompanied griots, bards, dancers and vocalists for centuries. They hail from a well-known Tuareg family which has performed this music for generations. Abellow Yattara, a master of the instrument, is the group leader. His uncle, Aboubacrine Yattara plays the bass tehardent. Other members of the group include Mohamed Ag Abellow, Tchiale Ag Aboubacrine, Mohamed Dicko and Abdoulaye Ag Mohamed. Their ease with one another is obvious in the verve of their relaxed performance. Their work represents cultural preservation renewed.
This genre of music has been performed from at least the 16th century by Tuareg griots to celebrate the end of harvest and the changing seasons, heroic warriors, and noble families. In contrast to Tuareg contemporary acts like Tinariwen and Bombino, Al Bilali Soudan take an acoustic approach to Tamashek folk music traditions.

September 15, 16, 17, 2022 7:30-9:00PM Walk The (pink) Elephant at the Performance Garage

Walk The (pink) Elephant memorializes multiple generations of (often queer) culture workers of color decimated by HIV/AIDS. WT(p)E is an evening-length exploration of absence and a ritual of reckoning, regeneration, defiance, and celebration in the face of cataclysmic loss.

Through a process of simultaneous research and generation, WT(p)E will seek to evoke and commune with the more hidden, intimate legacies of some of the many BIPOC, queer artists who succumbed to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, as well as the lives of those who continue to carry that loss in ways both subtle and profound.

Dance/performance artist yaTande Whitney V. Hunter and theatre/movement artist Jude Sandy have named their creative entity Denizen Arts, which represents their creative partnership and projects. Walk The (pink) Elephant is a multidisciplinary collaborative performance project informed by cultural and art-making practices of African diaspora, queer and other global identities.

Denizen Arts will collect testimony of survival from members of our communities who have cared for others with HIV/AIDS or who live HIV+ lives. These stories will be source material for a work of multi-disciplinary story-telling, using movement and physical metaphor, rhythm, sound, voice, text and ritual to consider this heritage and our place in the world anew.
