May 6, 2025 7:30-10:00PM Fire Museum Presents: Loboko at The Black Squirrel Club

LOBOKO features young Congolese vocalist and guitar virtuoso Yohni Djungu Sungu, alongside Soukouss-Stars legend and master bassist in his own right, Ngouma Lokito. The group is rounded out by drummer and co-founder Morgan Greenstreet.

The trio’s unique style is rooted in Congo’s ubiquitous soukous sound, one of Africa’s most popular musical exports that conquered dance from France to Colombia. LOBOKO filters classic Congolese soukous rhythms through NYC’s African and Afro-Caribbean diaspora, setting up a joyful transatlantic reverberation that connects Kinshasa, Paris, Palenque, NYC, and everywhere else where soukous is danced.

Yohni and Morgan helped spawn the group’s raucous NYC live appearances. They released their debut singles – Ekenge and Kanyunyi – on the Names You Can Trust label in 2023. The music is raw and new, playing with traditional Congolese rhythms and the transatlantic pulse that reverberates throughout the Caribbean. The band is electrifying live, taking us to the streets of Kinshasa and beyond.

About York Street Hustle:

Each week, ten musicians arrive at a former South Philadelphia funeral home where, one by one, they unload their old tube amps and vintage gear. Once inside, the classic sounds of the 1960s are reinvigorated, re-energized and reborn. Legends, like Stevie, Aretha and the Four Tops; lesser-known artists including Donny Hathaway, Arthur Conley and Betty Everett – all are given new life.

From their early years packing tiny South Street bars to repeated sell outs of World Cafe Live, YSH’s repertoire now spans nearly 1oo songs. This is not your typical Motown wedding band. With grit, sweat, and attention to detail, The York Street Hustle is the Northeast’s premier 10-piece 1960s soul and Motown tribute.
