This is a wonderful journey of tales, epics, songs, and dances that takes the young imagination of audiences back to the "land of the Dogon" in Mali West Africa.
"Mambugur" (Grandfather) is accompanied by his
village friend and fellow musician, Malika , as they search for the "wiley" character, "Babu"!
"Hey! Have you seen Babu? I’ve been searching for him everywhere?"
"Mambugur" (Grandfather) actively engages the audience children in an interactive search, telling Ancient African creation stories, singing songs in "unwritten languages", playing music, and enlisting the aid of his wonderful African Marionette friends known as "Dogo","Bozo", "Yasama" and "Yadjugulu".
You’ve never seen African Marionettes like these before! They’re almost human!
"Hey! Do you have plenty, plenty?"
Everyone in the audience will need "plenty, plenty" if they don’t find "Babu", because excitement becomes unbridled as the great Female Dogon Chakaba (Stilt Walker)is coming along with the four-legged "beast of the harvest, known as "Tyi-Wara"!

Mali Yaro & Goumbé Star
Abdoulaye Boreima, known as Mali Yaro, was born in 1973 and spent his childhood in Sirfi Koira, Téra, Niger. From his earliest childhood, he loved music, especially the goumbé drum. After moving to the capital, Niamey, he played goumbé with friends, made young and old alike dance with their rhythms. In 1995, he founded the orchestra Goumbé Star, whose other members are currently Papa Rassoulalaye Gueye (rhythm guitar), Omar Tankari (lead guitar), Mahamadoul-Habibou Elh Amadou (bass), Seydou Mounkaila (percussion), Manzo Abdoulaye (drums), and Boubacar Kandou (trumpet).
Mali Yaro and the Goumbé Stars soon became the band to watch in Niger and were nominated for Best Artist of the Year in 1996. Their 2000 album “Mali Bero” paid homage to a great Djerma warrior, their second “Walambandi” adressed problems of contemporary Nigerien society, and the third, “Femme” was dedicated to women’s issues. Their newest, “Paix,” was released in 2008 at a moment when Niger dealt with a problem of insecurity in the north, and invited both the rebels and military to lay down their arms for a united and prosperous Niger.

He has toured widely in Africa, Europe, and North America and won many Nigerien and International awards and prizes
For this tour, Mali Yaro & the Goumbé Stars are joined by Hadiza Mangou, a popular Nigerien singer and songwriter known for her irresistable melodies, smooth voice, and social activism. “In my lyrics, I speak of serious things, I don’t compose at random,” she told the Nigerien cultural magazine Fofo in 2011. Many of her songs celebrate women and their place at the forefront of society, and urges parents to educate their daughters, while others praise the sacrifice and patriotism of teachers, encourage youth to overcome their inertia, and raise awareness among them about the challenges of contemporary life.

Minas returns to World Cafe Live to present a retrospective of their entire recorded collection, from their first vinyl “Num Dia Azul” to their most recent release, “Bossa Nova Day”
Minas brought a new wave of Brazilian music to the Delaware Valley when they moved from Rio de Janeiro to Philadelphia in 1984. Today Minas is one of the most sought after Brazilian groups in the United States. Twice recipients of “Best of Philly” award, they have sold out shows World Cafe Live and also performed at The Kimmel Center,
The Mann, and the Painted Bride Arts Center, as well as at The Kennedy Center in DC and Lincoln Center in New York. Featuring songwriters Orlando Haddad on guitar and Patricia King on piano/keyboards, the duo’s voices reflect three decades of vocal and instrumental blending. Orlando has taught Brazilian music and samba percussion at The University of Pennsylvania and UArts. Minas will perform as a quartet, the duo plus bass and drums.

On Monday January 10, 5:30 PM at International House, Scribe Video Center, will host a fundraiser reception to support and celebrate the beginning of the organization's 2012 season and also host a very special edition of our Producers’ Forum series that evening beginning at 7PM. Immediately following the reception, will be the screening of director Susanne Rostock’s 2011 Sundance Film Festival selection documentary Harry Belafonte Sing Your Song. The film's director Susanne Rostock and editor Jason Pollard will be in person for the fundraiser reception and screening. Pollard will also teach a Master Class The Art and Craft of Editing the following evening Jan 11, 7PM at Scribe. The fee to attend the fundraiser reception and to see the documentary is $35. When Mexican vocalist Ximena Sariñana (hi-MEN-a sa-rin-YAH-na) released her debut solo album, Mediocre, in 2008, Rolling Stone gave it four stars and praised it as “one of the strongest debuts from a female singer-songwriter since Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me.” Recording the Spanish-language album was a natural step for Sariñana, who had risen to fame in her homeland as a child actress and had fronted a successful indie band for four years. “In Mexico, people believed in me as an artist,” says the fully bilingual 25-year-old. So when she began thinking about recording an album in English she was confronted with a tough decision: “Either stay in my country, where everyone knows who I am, or start from scratch and convince people that I’m worth it.” She chose the latter.
The result is a collection of songs that showcase her deep, striking voice, smart, thoughtful lyrics and offbeat personality.

In 2002, guitarist and singer Clay Ross moved from South Carolina to New York in pursuit of the jazz muse. Several years later he found himself in Recife, studying the regions folkloric music, bringing him by a circuitous route to reappraise the folk and blues traditions of his native south and conceive the idea of marrying them to the Northeastern Brazilian rhythms of maracatu, forró, and coco. Back in New York he called on accordionist Rob Curto, master exponent of forró, and they set out to combine their repertoires into an extensive library of Pan-American influences and form a band. With a crack coterie of renowned musicians sharing a love of roots music, Brazilian styles, and improvisational experimentation, Matuto deliver an inspirational live experience direct from the heart of New York City's global culture.

Please join us for an evening of wonderful Cuban music and refreshments as we gather together for a fundraiser to help our Quaker Friends in Holguin, Cuba.
The William Penn Charter School will host a benefit to raise money for the Quaker community in Holguin, Cuba, that is in dire need of financial assistance and supplies for living, as well as materials for rebuilding their church and other buildings.
On Friday, December 2, Conjunto Philadelphia, a Cuban ensemble directed by Jeff Torchon, will be headlining this benefit event. Jeff, a Penn Charter graduate, is currently part of the IT staff at PC, and also teaches music and directs the MS and US Jazz Bands at Germantown Friends School. Conjunto Philadelphia is a musical ensemble based in the Philadelphia area performing the music of Pre-Revolutionary Cuba. The group's main aspiration is to maintain the authenticity of the music, while performing it in a way that pays homage to Cuba's deep and treasured musical history. Penn Charter's acapella group, the Quaker Dozen, will also perform, along with other musical guests. Cuban refreshments will be served and donations will be accepted at the door.
We will also learn more about this Cuban Quaker community and the challenges they face in a presentation from Fran Bradley, a member of George School, who has been running a humanitarian service trip to Cuba for the past 30 years. Another trip is planned for the summer of 2012.
This event will hopefully pave the way for a relationship between Quakers in Cuba and the broader Quaker community here in Philadelphia. Please join us on Friday, December 2 from 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm at Penn Charter's David L. Kurtz Center for the Performing Arts, 3000 West School House Lane, Philadelphia, PA 19144. Founded in 2005, Kyo Daiko is a community- based group, which is the result of a collaboration between Settlement Music School and Shofuso Japanese House and Garden in Fairmount Park.
The group is led by instructor Kristopher Rudzinski, who is a member of the Settlement Music School percussion faculty. Mr. Rudzinski has performed with the group Taikoza, as well as studying with Taikoza’s founder, Mr. Marco Lienhard.
Kyo Daiko performs regularly at schools and community events, and has performed XPN’s World Cafe, the Kimmel Center’s Summer Solstice Celebration and ESPN’s Monday Night Football.
Unidos da Filadelfia (Philadelphia United) is a community-based samba school modeled after the Carnaval parade organizations of Rio de Janeiro and Salvador da Bahia in Brazil. Founded in 2005, the school's mission is to spread the joy and excitement of Brazilian percussion through music education and performance. Members of the school have the opportunity to play the traditional percussion instruments and learn the rhythmic styles of Brazilian Carnaval, and to perform at various community events. No prior musical experience is necessary.

Cuban-born Latin/modern jazz pianist-composer Elio Villafranca, internationally acclaimed for his genre-bending approach to modern Latin jazz, returns to the Bride to deliver a brand new project. Backed by his quintet and members of Los Pleneros de la 21, the fiery instrumentalist challenges the boundaries of jazz by fusing it with the syncopated nature of Afro-Caribbean music forms including ‘Bomba’ of Puerto Rico. Using an interpretive musical approach echoing Duke Ellington’s Colored Syncopators, Villafranca continues to produce unique compositional works. Featuring a folkloric dancer and a diverse group of musicians, Elio Villafranca & The Jass Syncopators strive to create a multi-layered musical/cultural dialogue enabling dancer and each musician to assert their unique artistic voice while maintaining the syncopation of the ensemble’s collective conversation.

The fiery instrumentalist-composer is internationally acclaimed for his genre-bending approach to modern Latin jazz. He effortlessly combines the rhythmic vitality of his native Cuba with a straight ahead sensibility steeped in the bop tradition, and the result is a music that is stunning and fresh, but that resonates powerfully with the influence of his beloved forebears. Full of highly complex rhythms yet sophisticated and refined and emotionally expressive, his work has earned respect from Cuba’s performing-recording piano forefathers including Chucho Valdes, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, as well as the great pioneers of other traditions including Paquito d’Rivera, Wynton Marsalis, Giovanni Hidalgo, and Dafnis Prieto. Prepare to be blown away by the jubilant and sublime Creole Choir of Cuba. With vibrant dancing, spectacular harmonies, and soul-stirring melodies, these showstoppers perform undiscovered musical treasures from Haiti, Dominica, and Cuba.
This uniquely impassioned singing group, celebrating roots, resistance and the irresistible rhythms of life, embarks on their first major U.S. city tour including the Bride in Philadelphia. Real World recording artists The Creole Choir of Cuba are an entirely fresh export, easily the most original vocal group to come out of their island country in many years. On the heals of their album release TANDE-LA (“listen”) performed to critical acclaim and sold-out houses in the UK, weeks following the album’s release in the U.S., The Creole Choir debuts Philadelphia. A performance slated to take place earlier this year (Jan of 2011 – canceled due to enhanced visa clearance measures) the now highly sought after ensemble follows through with its promise to share the songs and stories of their Haitian ancestors.
“Desandann” – the Choir’s Cuban name — literally means “descendents,” emerged in 1994 a time when Cubans faced difficult times due to economic collapse following the the fall of Soviet USSR. In response to food, clean water and electric shortages, the singers decided shift into survival mode and re-forge resistance songs and laments of their forebears and pay homage to the freedom songs passed down in their families beginning in the early 19th century. Since first appearing at the Edinburgh Festival in 2009, the choir’s mesmerizing sound, jubilant dancing and deep spirit has made them into an instant hit in Europe.

October 12, 2011 5;00-7:00 PM "How Philly Moves"' mural dedication and dance party
The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program has completed it’s most ambitious project to date: the 50,000+ square foot How Philly Moves mural is installed at the Philadelphia International Airport.
Now it’s time to celebrate! [updated]
The dedication date is set for 5pm – 7pm on Wednesday, October 12th in conjunction with Mural Arts Month. The Mural Arts Program is hosting a rooftop dance party at the airport, but an RSVP will be required. Come celebrate with us on Level 6 of Parking Garage F. Take SEPTA to the airport, disembark at Terminals E and F where you will be directed to the party!

Neither today nor ever before has there been a salsa group quite like Bio Ritmo. The group undeniably plays with the beat and attitude of ’70s-era salsa dura (hard salsa), but the conventionality stops there. With a roster that includes former rastas, punks, rockers, and jazzistas, Bio Ritmo can’t help but bring an exhilarating unorthodoxy to its music. It’s “salsa for the Space Age,” with a ridiculously tight and competent band that make the record interesting to listen to, while unmistakably danceable. Bio Ritmo has proved it is still possible to be true to the roots while expanding the parameters of their music in an intelligent, thoughtful and entertaining way.

In January 2010, Artistas y Músicos Latino Americanos (AMLA) created a Latin jazz quintet under the direction of Cuban master percussionist Juan “Cuco” Castellanos. The group’s performances blend traditional and contemporary Latin jazz, inspiring everyone within earshot to get off their seats and dance. If you haven't had enough salsa for the evening, try the Painted Bride's Salsa Caliente party, which starts at 9 PM.

PhillyBloco is modeled after the blocos of Rio de Janeiro, with their large percussion sections and harmonic/vocal accompaniment. Our group is comprised of twelve drummers, electric guitar, bass guitar, vocals, horn section, accordion, and Brazilian dancers. The group performs a raucous mash-up of SAMBA, FUNK, REGGAE and more made popular by both Brazilian and non-Brazilian artists including: Olodum, Timbalada, Monobloco, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder. The one constant in all of our music is a heavy percussive element (12 drummers!) that we use to explore the tremendous range of Brazilian rhythms, applying our own unique creativity and energy to each arrangement.
