April 22, 2015 8:30 PM An Evening with Oliver Mtukudzi and The Black Spirits at Johnny Brenda's
One of Africa's musical giants, Zimbabwe's Oliver Mtukudzi is a guitarist, vocalist, performer and composer. And he must be one of the few people to have a beat named after him: 'tuku'!
Zimbabwe’s pride, most successful artist and national treasure, Oliver Mtukudzi is gifted with a deep and gusty voice plus a talent for writing songs that reflect on the daily life and struggles of his people. 'Tuku' as he is known, began performing in 1977 and has earned a devoted following across Africa and beyond, all the while incorporating elements of different musical traditions. A member of Zimbabwe's Kore Kore tribe, he sings in the nation's dominant Shona language as well as Ndebele and English.
Tuku's music is heavily influenced by a humanist chimurenga ethos, which, in turn, is inspired by the hypnotic rhythms of the mbira (thumb piano). His music also incorporates South Africa mbaqanga, the energetic Zimbabwean pop style jit, and the traditional kateke drumming of his clan. One of Tuku's biggest fans is Bonnie Raitt, who has not only called Tuku "a treasure," and recorded a cover of "Hear me Lord" but also credits Tuku as the inspiration for the song "One Belief Away" on her album Fundamental.
Tuku (along with Angelique Kidjo, Hugh Masekela and Ladysmith Black Mambazo) is one of the most successful African recordings artists in North America, having sold hundreds of thousand of records on Putumayo, Heads Up/Telarc and Sheer Sound. Tuku is an alumni of Acoustic Africa II (2011 edition) and a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Eastern and Southern Africa, focusing on Young People's Development and HIV and AIDS Prevention.
Oliver Mtukudzi will be performing two sets.

Elena is also interested in the preservation of diverse music and culture in the United States and is currently spearheading an album for families featuring folk and children’s music from East Asia.
PRAISE FOR RABBIT DAYS AND DUMPLINGS
Hands down, it is the best all-ages album I’ve come across.- New York Family Magazine
Elena Moon Park has found a way to incorporate Asian elements with American elements in grandly metaphoric sort of way that says something powerful and positive about the potential of cross-cultural exchange, and on that note, about the immigrant experience. But also? It's just fun to listen to, and that's enough in and of itself. – About.com
Rabbit Days and Dumplings is a timeless classic and one that fully supports Park's strong belief that music has the ability to transcend borders, ages, languages, and backgrounds. – Kids Can Groove

April 16, 2015 7:30-9:00 PM Chris Aschman's "Trinidelphia" at the New Leaf Club in Rosemont, PA
Celebrating Jazz Month: Jazz Bridge Third Thursdays Neighborhood Concert Series on The Main Line Presents Trinidelphia with Chris Aschman
Jazz Bridge Third Thursday Neighborhood Concert Series on The Main Line presents Trinidelphia with Chris Aschman at The New Leaf Club—1225 Montrose Avenue in Rosemont—on Thursday, April 16. Tickets are $10, $5 for students, and are available only at the door. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Information: 215-517-8337 or visit jazzbridge.org/events/neighborhood-concerts.
This performance, and all Jazz Bridge concerts being held in the month of April, are a part of the City of Philadelphia’s “Jazz Appreciation Month” celebration, sponsored by “Creative Philadelphia,” within the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy.
Born out of street jams in Rittenhouse Square in 2005, Trinidelphia, Philadelphia’s preeminent Caribbean music ensemble, came to life. The name itself summarizes the mission of the band: to bring a unique Philadelphia twist to the steel drum music of Trinidad. Bandleader Chris Aschman (steelpan) is joined by Shawn Hennessey (vocals, guitar, percussion) to create a front line that can get any audience moving and grooving to the music. Ian Rafalak (bass) and Joe Truglio (drumset) form the rhythm section, which can handle a range of rhythmic styles, such as soca, calypso, reggae, Afro-Cuban, ska, samba, funk, and jazz. Trinidelphia has performed at a wide variety of functions, from school assemblies and parades to concerts and casino performances. Members of Trinidelphia have toured the world with many national artists in a wide variety of genres, including Chaka Kahn, Dionne Warwick, Stanley Clarke, Tina Marie, and Bill Withers.
Jazz Bridge, an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to assisting Greater Philadelphia Metro area jazz and blues musicians and vocalists in times of crisis, sponsors these neighborhood concerts throughout the region to keep the sound of Philadelphia alive.
