June 15, 2024

Danilo Pérez Trio featuring John Patitucci and Adam Cruz

For nearly two decades, Pérez performed alongside bassist John Patitucci as the pianist and musical director of the Wayne Shorter Quartet. The quartet became known for an almost telepathic way of communicating musically, winning the Best Jazz Instrumental Album Grammy Award in 2019 for Blue Note Records release, EMANON. Patitucci first came to worldwide acclaim in the mid-1980s, when his work with Chick Corea helped put him at the forefront of the jazz world. Drummer, composer, and educator Adam Cruz was born in New York City and has been a vital creative force on the international jazz scene. He leads his own group, is an integral part of renowned pianist Danilo Pérez’s trio, and regularly works with artists such as Tom Harrell, The Mingus Big Band, Joey Calderazzo, Chris Potter, Steve Wilson and Edward Simon.

Born To Drum is a 4 day camp for women held every summer since 2006. It was created to give a supportive and welcoming place to play, learn and teach hand drumming. Drumming was traditionally allowed only for males in most world cultures. Our all-woman faculty is composed of Maestra drummers from all over the world.  Born to Drum is produced by Women Drummers International. It has been an overwhelming success and has continued for 17 years. This year we will meet in August at Walker Creek Ranch in Petaluma, CA for 4 days of drumming, dance, song, healing, and fun. Come join us!

June 9, 2024 12:00-7:30PM Odunde Festival 2024 at 23rd and South Sts

ODUNDE was created in 1975 by Lois Fernandez. The festival attracts UP TO 500,000 people annually and is the largest African American street  festival held in the country. The ODUNDE festival, whose concept originates from the Yoruba people of Nigeria, West Africa, celebrates the coming of another year for  African Americans and Africanized people around the world. It is an occasion highlighted by a colorful procession from  23rd and South Street to the Schuylkill River where an offering of  fruit and flowers is made to Oshun, the Yoruba goddess of the river. ODUNDE is also known for its authentic African marketplace featuring vendors from around the world selling merchandise from African nations, the Caribbean and Brazil.

The festival has a $30 million economic impact on State of Pennsylvania and a $28 million economic impact on the City of Philadelphia.

Each year, on the second Sunday  in June, ODUNDE takes place covering 16 city blocks and has 2 stages of live entertainment.  ODUNDE will be celebrating its 49TH year in the  traditional South Philadelphia location near 23rd and South street. The festival started in 1975 with a $100.00 grant and neighbors from Fernandez's South Philadelphia community. Since then the ODUNDE Festival has become a national model for cultural street festivals in the country.  The eclectic mix of vendors, entertainment, music, food, jewelry and African art  attracts people from around the WORLD.  ODUNDE IS FOR EVERYONE, WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY THIS YEAR!!!
