Join us for an uplifting concert with Philadelphia-based world music ensemble Jaffna! Jaffna is an acoustic, ethnic fusion ensemble consisting of Roger Mgrdichian (oud), Raji Malik (guitar), Branavan Ganesan (tabla) and Joseph Tayoun (dumbek). The Philadelphia-based group combines instrumentation and influences from the Middle East, India, and anywhere else that inspires them with original music both exotic and familiar. With roots in the eclectic 1990s world music scene centered around Philadelphia’s Middle East Restaurant, the group maintains its distinct style with compositions and performances that stretch the boundaries of their respective cultures.

Jaffna has produced 2 CDs of original music, Acoustic Allies and Mandala, and its members maintain a high level of activity in many world music projects such as Barakka, One, Hindugrass, Arehm. Atzilut, and the Mid-East Ensemble.

Our mission is to deconstruct and reconstruct the rich traditions of Iranian classical music, transforming them into new forms through contemporary composition techniques. Along with art making, storytime, and our signature Barnes scavenger hunt, this month’s event features special performances by Philly’s beloved dance troupe Philadanco! This month, experience the Philadelphia Dance Company. Celebrated for its innovation, creativity, and preservation of African-American dance traditions, PHILADANCO cultivates the skills of emerging and professional dancers and choreographers in a nurturing environment while increasing the appreciation of dance among its many communities.

These performances will feature two groups: PHILADANCO’s apprentice company (ages 15–23) and their youth ensemble (ages 13–16). The dancers are selected through an extensive evaluation process and train in professional-level classes. Since 2006, these ensembles have offered young dancers access to performance opportunities to develop their technique.
