October 17, 2026 2:00-7:00PM Vibe Nation: A Tribute to Khan Jamal at AAPA Temple

The Germantown Jazz Festival proudly presents its Fall Fundraiser! This Fall we're shining light of the jazz vibraphone!

Five of Philadelphia's leading vibraphonists will converge in Germantown to showcase the prolific autonomy of the instrument as a lead sound in a quartet format. Not unlike the pathfinding leaders of old like Lionel Hampton, and Milt Jackson of the Modern Jazz Quartet, Gary Burton, Bobby Hutcherson. Vibe Nation will feature some of the area's best vibraphonists: Settlement Music School, Wynnefield Branch educator/vibist Tony Miceli, will act as Musical Director alongside veteran Philly vibist Randy Sutin, Behn Gillece, Oliver Maymen, and young lion Julian Lee.

In addition, these fine leading men will be backed by an outstanding rhythm section featuring Neil Podgurski on piano, Nimrod Speaks on bass, and Khary Abdul Shaheed on drums. A once in a lifetime opportunity to witness this great conversion of musical jazz musicians from Philadelphia. Don't misss it!! // This special fundraiser supports the Germantown Jazz Festival, an emerging annual celebration of Germantown’s deep connection to jazz and its cultural legacy.

With the support of Artcinia @artcinia , a Philadelphia-based organization dedicated to making the performing arts accessible to every community, the Germantown Jazz Festival brings music, history, and community together, honoring jazz’s past, present, and future.

October 14, 1016 5:30-8:00PM Symposium: Socio-Sonic Histories of Modern South India at the Annenberg Center

Part of the Arts of India Festival

This symposium examines sound and music in modern South India as contested terrain, where forms of cultural nationalism and shifting practices of inclusion and exclusion that emerged from the late 19th to the early 21st centuries have determined whose voices and musical practices were canonized as “classical music.”

Bringing together three deeply invested scholars and practitioners, this event reconsiders these political and cultural transformations and asks what is at stake—methodologically, historiographically and ethically—in developing a more capacious sense of the plural pasts of South Indian music. The event features South Indian vocalist and author TM Krishna, Prof. Davesh Soneji (South Asia Studies, University of Pennsylvania) and Prof. Amanda Weidman (Anthropology, Bryn Mawr College). The symposium will be moderated by Prof. Anna Schultz (Music and the Humanities, University of Chicago).

The symposium is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

October 4, 2026 3:00-8:00PM Not So Latin presents: Philly Tango Lab at the Philadelphia Ethical Society

Philly Tango Lab

at the

Philadelphia Ethical Society

Click here to reserve your spot!

Philly Tango Lab is a small group of volunteers that aims to create events in which tango dancers, musicians and general audience can experience the full extent of tango culture, as it is still alive in Buenos Aires, not only on Milongas (tango dances), but in small cafes in which singers connect with a devout audience, in the long rehearsals of the "Orquestas Típicas" (the tango Big Bands), in the connection between the musicians, dancers and audience, and, most of all, like it's enjoyed among friends in a party.

We aim to contribute to the promotion of tango music by teaching the fundamentals of tango playing to musicians and creating Tango ensembles directed by musicians with known expertise on Tango music.

On our monthly event at the gorgeous premises of the Ethical Society pf Philadelphia on Rittenhouse Square, we offer a workshop for musicians, from 3 to 5pm, and a concert open to those who want to listen and/or dance to Tango music, featuring the Maestros, the ensemble, and special guests, as well as a mini jam session.

Registration for the workshop can be done writing to the musical director, Alejo de los Reyes: contacto@alejodelosreyes.com
Scores for the workshop are available for all instruments

This month we'll have the visit of Rodrigo Ávalos (bandoneón), recenlty moved to New York from Buenos Aires.

General admission is $30, there's paid parking around the area.

Duo Bethlehem and Sad Patrick blend blues, jazz, folk and soul into songs of love and other struggles. Combining Bethlehem’s soaring vocals and driving percussion with Sad Patrick’s sparse guitar, they deliver powerful songs about being in and out of love, keeping your head up in the city, struggling to make your way, and seeking peace on the margins. Sad Patrick’s hybrid of folk, blues and jazz playing supports Bethlehem’s “vocussion” – her powerful singing, remarkable improvisations and nuanced melodies riding atop her tarima stomps and body percussion.
