June 28, 2012 6:00 PM - 2:00 AM PICÓ TIKI TACO @ Night Market/Italian Market
El Costeno, 940 South 9th St
A project designed and composed by:
Juan Bustamante & Miguel Antonio Horn
... DJs:
Russ Alexander (Bottom Power, Rock Tits)
Juanderful (TROPICALISMO, EQuatorial Funk)
Cocktail specialists:
Stephen Seibert (all over Philly and beyond, come say your farewells, this might be his last public appearance)
Alejandro Vaca-Pina (Village Whiskey)
Josh Christian (Tinto)
This is an all night experience starting at 6pm, connected with the Night Market that will take place on the Italian Market and continuing through the night, beyond the street festivities.
We are taking over El Costeño restaurant, setting up a sound system art installation(for one night only), making some fine cocktails, and dancing to some tropical jams.
The artwork we designed for this event is a site-specific sculptural installation using materials donated by vendors of the Italian market that is reminiscent of Colombia's Caribbean music culture. A "Picó" is an elaborate sound system used by dj's in coastal Colombia, traditionally painted with vibrant folk imagery. We have created a structure recalling these "picós" to be installed in El Costeño restaurant (940 S 9th St), which will be on view to the public, June 28th, for one night only.
Following the festivities of the Night Market, the installation will come alive as DJs Russ Alexander (Rock
Tits, Making Time, Bottom Power) and Juanderful (Tropicalismo, Equatorial Funk) will provide a Caribbean soundtrack for the night from within the artwork.
Mixologists Steven Seibert of Amada and Alejandro Vaca-Piña of Village Whiskey and Josh Christian of Tinto will be offering specialty tiki cocktails created specifically for the event.
A taco menu will be available by El Costeño's kitchen for late night bites.
