Philly Drum Project is excited to partner with Girls Rock Philly and Drum Like A Lady to feature musician and feminist activist Kiran Gandhi! Kiran is a Los Angeles-based musician, feminist activist and music industry thinker with an MBA from Harvard. She has toured professionally drumming for M.I.A and Thievery Corporation and currently produces electronic music under her own project called Madame Gandhi. She also advises music companies Spotify, Stem, Bonnaroo and D’addario. She is perhaps most well-known for running the London Marathon bleeding-freely to combat period stigma around the world, sparking a global viral conversation about how we treat menstruation in various cultures. Her goal is to combine her intellectual and musical talents in order to re-imagine a music industry that is healthier for women and girls around the world.
The BBB portion of the evening will be immediately followed by a jam session hosted by Drum Like A Lady! Bring your sticks, instruments, etc, and get in the jam! All instruments and players welcome!
Beats, Brews, & Banter is a free event that gives local drummers, musicians, and wannabes a chance to network, share ideas, and learn from some of the best drummers in the area.
Girls Rock Philly is a volunteer-based non-profit music and mentoring organization dedicated to empowering girls, women, trans youth and adults from the greater Philadelphia region through music education and activities that foster leadership skills, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. At Girls Rock Philly, we provide a community driven response that is dedicated to identifying and deconstructing gender-based oppression while addressing the ways it manifests itself in youth. We use supportive, multi-generational, peer mentoring model. This model works to create a safer space that encourages the fearless expression, artistic experimentation, thoughtful analysis, and imaginative action of our participants.
Philly Drum Project is a Percussive Collective, founded in 2011, dedicated to making drumming more accessible in the Philadelphia area by helping those in our region share lessons, beats, and gear in an environment where community, creativity, education, and diversity are valued. Beats, Brews, & Banter is held every month and has featured such drummers as Eric Slick (Dr. Dog), Spanky McCurdy (Jill Scott, Lady Gaga), David Uosikkinen (The Hooters), and Fred Berman (Amos Lee). Drum Like a Lady is an organization whose mission is to provide a safe space for women of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, religious beliefs and lifestyles to express their uniqueness through collective drumming, dance, music education and mental health advocacy. Founded in 2014, in response to the discriminatory and sexist practices observed in the drumming community, Drum Like a Lady encourages women, and young girls alike, to see the drum as a healing instrument, a community tool, and one of the most powerful and effective methods of non-verbal communication known to humanity. Unfortunately, Western culture has indoctrinated us (women) to see the drum as masculine, loud, dominant, and aggressive, all of which is anti-female. Through the Drum Like a Lady jam sessions, musicians at all skills levels, ranging from the novice to the world traveler, are invited to share in the creation and celebration of a new soundscape – rooted in improvisation and inspired by the beauty of femininity.
