January 5, 2019 8:00PM-12:00AM Salsa Caliente at The Painted Bride
W/ WANDA RIVERA Y SU ORQUESTA
For seasoned salseros and novices alike, Salsa Caliente! is Philly’s premier salsa nightlife series. Inspired by the New York City club scene of the 60s, Caliente invites dancers of any skill level or walk of life to enjoy the live energy of Latin music together. It’s a vision brought to life by Jesse Bermudez, founder of La Asociación de Músicos Latino Americanos (AMLA) and long-time Painted Bride collaborator.
With his help, The Bride’s theater will once again transform into a sultry cabaret-style dancehall. The evening begins with a group salsa lesson from Maestro Flaco of Flaco’s Dance Factory, at 8 pm and then, once acquainted with the groove, all dancers are welcome to get down the sounds of a live Latin big band at 9:15. This season dance along to Wanda Rivera y su Orquesta.

January 4, 2019 3:00-5:00PM Annual Three Kings Celebration at Taller Puertorriqueño
January 6 is a special day in the Latin world; it is the height of Christmas Season when The Three Kings, Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, parade into town bearing gifts for the children. Taller’s El Día de Reyes comes to el Barrio on January 4th, this year two days earlier. With live music, gift giving, and a parade.
We will meet The Three Kings in the atrium and continue with music and song to the back of the building and around the front into the theater where the children will receive a gift and listen to the story of the kings. In keeping with the tradition, the children must bring a small box with grass (cut paper or something similar is acceptable). The event is conducted in Spanish and English and is free to all.
Registration is filled.

December 31, 2018 9:00PM-Midnight NYE Bash with PhillyBloco at 118 North
PhillyBloco is modeled after the blocos of Rio de Janeiro, with their large percussion sections and harmonic/vocal accompaniment. Our group is comprised of twelve drummers, electric guitar, bass guitar, vocals, horn section, accordion, and Brazilian dancers. The group performs a raucous mash-up of SAMBA, FUNK, REGGAE and more made popular by both Brazilian and non-Brazilian artists including: Olodum, Timbalada, Monobloco, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder. The one constant in all of our music is a heavy percussive element (12 drummers!) that we use to explore the tremendous range of Brazilian rhythms, applying our own unique creativity and energy to each arrangement.
Our music is extremely high energy, full of passion and feeling. We want to make people dance, feel good, and give them something to celebrate every time they see us perform!

December 20, 2018 8:00-10:00PM Jazz Residency: Dariel Peniazek/Maya Peniazek/Ariacne Trujillo
Dariel Peniazek, wishes to create music that “combines the infectious rhythms of South America with the intellectual approach of modern jazz.” Collaborating with poet, playwright, and lyricist Maya Peniazek, his piece will address, through its lyrics and spoken word, his experiences of discovering his cultural identity as a Latino-American. Using the tres cubano, a traditional guitar-like instrument of Cuban origin, he plans to explore new territory of Latin jazz by utilizing the instrument in a new context, digging into modern jazz while paying homage to its Cuban roots. The work will combine “Latin rhythms with the distinctly Philadelphian sounds [I have] so voraciously inhaled in the past 5 years.”
Peniazek’s music is representative of his own sense of personal identity as a first generation American. “I aim to use this project to fuse what I consider to be the 2 most significant parts of my musical identity: Latin-American music and Philadelphia . . . In my collaboration with lyricist Maya Peniazek, I plan to write lyrics that discuss my experience of discovering my cultural identity as a Latino-American.” Peniazek is also enlisting the expertise of Arturo Stable (percussion, Paquito De Rivera) and Cuban singer Ariacne Trujillo who was nominated for a Grammy in 2014 and was part of the PIFA 2018 La NOCHE Celebration.

December 7, 2018 8:30-11:00PM The York Street Hustle Holiday Spectacular
The York Street Hustle returns for their 2nd annual holiday show at Union Transfer. A yearly tradition that keeps growing, The York Street Hustle brings 60’s Motown and Soul to life with a 10-piece band, including many holiday motown favorites such as “Jackson Five’s “Someday at Christmas”, Darlene Love’s “Marshmellow World” and Otis Redding’s “Merry Christmas Baby”.
Each week, ten musicians arrive at a former South Philadelphia funeral home where, one by one, they unload their old tube amps and vintage gear. Once inside, the classic sounds of the 1960s are reinvigorated, reenergized and reborn. Legends, like Stevie, Aretha and the Four Tops; lesser-known artists including Donny Hathaway, Arthur Conley and Betty Everett – all are given new life.
In a few short years the York Street Hustle has gone from filling tiny South Street bars to repeated sell outs of WXPN’s World Cafe Live. Their repertoire now spans over 90 songs including more than a decade worth of Detroit, Memphis and Chicago soul. This is not your typical Motown band. With grit, sweat, and attention to detail, The York Street Hustle is the Northeast’s premier 10-piece 1960s soul tribute.
Join the band for their annual holiday spectacular, including many Motown and Soul holiday favorites!
