”Semillas Ancestrales” (Ancestral Seeds) invites you to this workshop of ancestral hand drum making. The use of the drum dates back to the oldest tribes in the universe. It is also called “medicine” because with its sound as a product of vibration and the wind, it creates waves that connect with the human frequency, aligning and in sync with the human body.

In this workshop you will be guided by an instructor in the ancestral medicines to make your own hand drum. This ceremony of hand-drum making will be consecrated to give thanks to the elements from nature that provided it. This hand-drum will be a healing tool for you and to be used as means of elevating vibrational frequency on individuals with fractured health and their emotional being.

The workshop cost $80 dollars.

The cost includes all the materials such as a 12-14 inches drum frame, leather trims for lacing, drum beaters, leather from elk, goat or moose, rawhide for drum, feathers and crystal beads for decoration.

About the workshop facilitator:

She had the awakening of her heritage from the Cherokee people through her grandmother and the elders in the tribe. Brenda “Soaringhawk” is also a registered nurse by profession and an avid advocate for the quality of life of individuals. She is also an Speaker on topics of personal health and companion for palliative care patients. Her compassion has taken her in a 40 years personal journey and in exchange she has received the gifts of the teachings from the elders, whom have shared with Brenda the forms to represent the ritual elements such as the drum making, bearing the medicinal chalupa and others, to connect with others through her teachings.

Sister Brenda” Soaringhawk” uses the sound and journey work to listen to the heartbeat of Mother Earth. Through the creation of a medicine hand drum, you will honor our brother the animal that let us use his hide for the drum and the healing vibration it brings. Brenda” Soaringhawk” is a strong advocate of education on indigenous matters and firmly believes in the process of birthing of a drum and its healing sound.

March 23, 2018 5:00-7:00PM Rumba Clave Blen Blen Blen film screening + Live Rumba

Rumba Clave Blen Blen Blen is a song of praise to the musical genre of rumba in New York City. It explores the city's Afro-Cuban culture and unravels the African and Andalusian origins of rumba, following both ordinary people and famous musicians through its dances, drums, and clave rhythm. The film is a poem of color and music that brings to the surface the religious cosmogonies of Bantu, Abakua, Yoruba, and Arara traditions that have nourished the genre. By paying homage to its masters, including Chano Pozo and his collaborations with Dizzy Gillespie, Rumba Clave Blen Blen Blen traces the history of a genre through the words and sounds of scholars, producers, artists, and musicians who continue to practice it today.

Join us on Friday March 23 as we welcome director ArĆstides FalcĆ³n ParadĆ for a screening of the film, followed by a session of Q&A. The event will take place at the Institute of Contemporary Art from 5:00-7:00pm. Refreshments and snacks will be served.

Following the screening, all are invited for a night of live rumba and dancing at iMPeRFeCT Gallery (5539 Germantown Ave.) from 9:30pm onward. TIMBALONA will open this portion of the night with a few songs, and then open rumba will begin. Transportation will be provided upon request (farrahr@upenn.edu).

Both events are free and open to the public.

**Pablo Batista Latin Jazz Ensemble**
Having performed with a diverse range of artists from Alicia Keys to Eddie Palmieri, percussionist Pablo Batista is a master percussionist. He is joined by Bass BootCamp (BBC) faculty member Chico Huff, one of the best bass players to come out of the vibrant Philadelphia music scene. BBC co-founder and Joe Zawinul / Grover Washington alum Gerald Veasley, and other faculty members will jam with Pablo in a finale to be remembered.

**Divinity Roxx**

**Michael Manring (solo)**
Hailed by many as the world’s leading solo bassist, Michael Manring has been pushing back the boundaries of what’s possible on the bass guitar for over three decades. While his technical skill and innovations always make an impression, it is his ability to communicate on a profound emotional level that most touches listeners. As editor Tom Darter wrote in Keyboard magazine after seeing one of Michael's solo concerts, "Forget his astounding technique and musicality; forget his absolute command of his instruments; forget how seamlessly the musical ideas and the performance of them were wedded together...The enlightenment came most from feeling (seeing, hearing) the joy Michael felt to be playing...his brand of transcendental chops and musical understanding...was all in the service of the final outcome, the joy of making music."
