Slowey and the Boats

Slowey & the Boats are pioneers of Philadelphia’s Hawaiian jazz scene. A five-piece instrumental concern, S&TB deftly blend elements of traditional folk melodies, western swing, ballads, tangos, and Hawaiian party classics – and all before you’ve finished your first Mai Tai. Their music has something for everyone – young, old, cool, uptight.

The Deconstructionists

Born out of the eternal search for what's true, and the desire to pass on to the next generation only the things that can stand up to questioning, "The Deconstructionists" contains 12 honest songs that chronicle the difficult process of tearing apart one's deeply engrained mindsets. Accompanied by some of his Waiting for Cadence bandmates (Joe Stauffer, Joel Meck, and Dan Carpenter) and others, Chris takes the listener on a journey through the deconstruction process and, in some cases, back out again. Sonically dense on purpose, the listener should hear new things with each listen. Borrowing vibes from late 80's/early 90's alternative music as well as from the current indie and Americana scenes, Chris has created a layered sound that is interesting and unique. Cliches have no place in these writings as The Deconstructionists attempt to use words in new ways to describe the age-old search for truth.

Janie Rothfield and Allan Carr:
Appalachian and Scottish Roots Music

Allan grew up in Aberdeen, Scotland, in a musical family of singers, fiddlers, pipers and accordion players and surrounded by rich traditional music of the Northeast of Scotland. He is one of Scotland's finest singers and shares his stories and personal knowledge about the history of the old Scottish songs and ballads to bring them alive today. Janie's is an award winning fiddler and clawhammer banjo player who easily moves from Appalachian Old Time to Celtic music with her lively tunes and soulful singing.

Jane and Allan play traditional roots music that is directly from the source while expanding on that tradition with newly composed songs and tunes. Great singing, hot instrumentals and with Allan’s humor, always a whole lot of fun!

November 18, 2018 8:00PM AfroTaino presents: Y La Bamba + BALÚN

Y La Bamba
Y LA BAMBA
“One of the most innovative and exciting young vocalists around.” -NPR

"Front woman Luz Elena Mendoza can warble tremulously like a Latina Joanna Newsom, then let rip a robust alt-country holler not unlike that of Neko Case."
- Rolling Stone

"Mendoza’s voice resounds with a profound sense of history, her guitar strumming soft but with gripping presence."- The Portland Mercury

Luz Elena Mendoza's story is one sung to her ancestors and humanity, exploring a faith that is greater than just religion, and a life of metamorphosis and awakening.

Born in San Francisco as a first generation daughter of immigrant parents from Michoacan Mexico, she spent her childhood raised by the melodies and stories that were being told through traditional Mexican folk songs.

From the intimate, contemplative verses in her native-language, to the revelations of the history in her roots, her story is delivered with poise. Mendozas poetic expression is raw, and ever evolving.

These songs are a soundtrack built for coming to grips with, not just one’s own mortality, but the fragility of the world, presenting sounds that carry the realness of ancestral trauma and the search of identity.

Presented by World Cafe Live & AfroTaino Productions
BALÚN
Brooklyn-based electronic indie band Balún self-identify as transnational. The quartet that broke out of the San Juan indie scene a decade ago has since undergone a formational odyssey through the industry, academia, and the stateside Puerto Rican experience. Balún’s long awaited sophomore album Prisma Tropical focuses an incredibly wide field of genres and influences into a revelatory sound that evokes both of the band’s homes and the distance between them.

About Sharon Katz & The Peace Train

The multicultural South African band of Sharon Katz & The Peace Train helped Nelson Mandela end Apartheid and have continued spreading their message of peace and reconciliation around the world. Their pulsating rhythms, rich harmonies, guitar-driven melodies, spine-tingling dances, funky basslines, intricate drum patterns, and compelling lyrics tell of the social justice challenges worldwide and how we can change them - while getting the dance party going! Nominated for the Grammy’s “Best World Music Album,” the group made history in 1992 when they formed South Africa’s first, 500-voice multiracial choir and then organized a courageous tour on board a train –The Peace Train – to promote a peaceful transition to democracy. The documentary film about The Peace Train’s music and work, “When Voices Meet,” was selected by 30 film festivals and won Best Documentary, Best Director, Best Original Soundtrack, and Audience Award at Philadelphia International Film Festival. Recordings: “Imbizo” on Billboard’s Highly Recommended list and Grammy nomination list for Best World Music Album; “Live in NYC with Pete Seeger;” “Double Take” with Jazz divas Abigail Kubeka and Dolly Rathebe; “Carnival!” with Sting, Elton John, Tina Turner and Madonna and “Side-By Side” featuring Sharon Katz and Peace Train co-founder, Nonhlanhla Wanda.

November 17, 2018 7:30PM Jamaaladeen Tacuma and the Gnawa Soul Experience Band

The PNC Arts Alive presents Jazz Cultural Voices an initiative that has demonstrated a belief in the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz & Performing Arts and a commitment to providing us with the funding that makes this event possible.
In 2016 Jamaaladeen Tacuma was invited to perform in Morocco by Gnaou World Music Festival in Essaouira. The festival features and highlights  Gnawa Fusion.  Jamaaladeen brought together musicians from The USA, France, and Austria to join him in his band Jamaaladeen Tacuma’s Baba Oud and he was paired with a Moroccan musician Maalem Haasan Bousso.
This combination of ancient African Gnawa traditional instrumentation and musical themes along with Jamaaladeen's sense of production in Funk, Jazz, and groove mashes together a completely new sound fresh to the global listening audience. The music is powerful with emotion and intensity and for sure will bring the audience to their dancing feet.
For the special performance at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts, PNC Arts Alive Jazz Cultural Voices series, Jamaaladeen brings together Philadelphia musicians along with Moroccan musicians living in the USA to complete his band Jamaaladeen Tacuma and the Gnawa Soul Experience.
The fusion with Gnawa music marks a milestone in my musical career carrying on the idea of bridging the musical gap culturally along with preserving and celebrating Jazz and Gnawa music and their rich repertoire of ancient African song, rhythm, and dance. Long live America’s classical music jazz and long live Gnawa." — Jamaaladeen Tacuma
