March 2 & 3, 2019 8:00PM Sanchel Brown's Home to Homeland Dance Class
From Baltimore to Senegal, Sanchel Brown’s new evening length dance journey is a reminder that home is always beneath the feet. Urban Movement Art's current Artist in Resident Sanchel Brown presents Home to Homeland on March 2 & 3, at 8 pm. Philadelphia, PA - In Home to Homeland, choreographer Sanchel Brown, dances, sings, raps, and raises an eyebrow as she travels from 1920’s Harlem to contemporary day time television. Brown weaves common yet diverse movement languages of footwork, as she invites us to follower her footprints towards the meaning of Motherland. Home to Homeland includes stops smack dab in the middle of a New Orleans second line as well as the Baltimore of Brown’s childhood. Sanchel has been teaching her B’more Afro House class at Urban Movement Arts since summer of 2018, when she came on as a Guest Teaching Artist. The richness of her varied training and passion continues to unfold as she explores her repertoire more broadly, including her experience as a theater actor and choreographer. Talking about the piece/her process, Brown considers, “While in Senegal, I felt a connection of Dance as healing -- as connected to my childhood in Baltimore -- although there were dark days and minimal resources, everyone danced. While visiting New Orleans, I witnessed the same connection to brown bodies whom seem to have lost so much, yet have so much through their dance.” March 2 8 pm March 3 8 pm $12 Tickets online or at the door: https://tinyurl.com/UMAsanchel 2100 Chestnut St (2nd Floor), Philadelphia, PA *entrance on 21st, next to Poi Dog* |

In 2010, singer & composer Ravid Kahalani founded the rare combination of top musicians we now call Yemen Blues. From the start, Yemen Blues created an original sound that became a new language in contemporary music. The intense musicians hail from NYC, Uruguay & Tel Aviv. This includes the core members of creation: Rony Iwryn, Itamar Doari & Shanir Blumenkranz. Each member comes from a different background and brings their own sound and arrangements to Ravid's compositions. The result of this amazing group is a powerful energy that mixes Yemenite, West African & Jazz influences and what Ravid likes to call "New Age Culture Music". The mambo and North African rhythms create a joyful and deep foundation, while the vocals remind the listener of ancient Arabic chants mixed with funk & blues. For their first album, the group collaborated with the well-known maestro Omer Avital who served as a musical director & producer. Since then, Yemen Blues keeps magic alive with a constant stream of new songs and their world-renowned exciting live performances!!

1901 Vine Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103-1189
ADMISSION IS FREE.
The Mysterious Travelers are back!!! After their magnificent, One Book - Reportperformance in July 2018, the Mysterious Traveler All Stars take the stage once again at the Montgomery Auditorium at the Parkway Central Library in Center City, Philadelphia.
The Mysterious Traveler All Stars are a natural and logical outgrowth of the Mysterious Traveler Concert Series. Back in early 2014, Leo Gadson of Producers Guild, Adam Feldman of the Free Library of Philadelphia and Homer Jackson of the Philadelphia Jazz Project met to discuss a new concert series. It was called the Mysterious Traveler Concert Series. The series presented monthly concerts from September through May, showcasing young and not so young, Philadelphia Jazz artists. The name of the series emphasized the need for these highly talented artists and the general public to get acquainted, making these strangers no longer mysterious, but friends and fans. Probably most important, these concerts were be free to the general public. You didn't have to be a hipster or a Jazz expert to attend. You just had to show up and enjoy yourself.
The upcoming concert features a unique musical ensemble, comprised of stellar artists who have performed in the four year old Mysterious Traveler Concert Series: a collaboration between the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Jazz Project. This concert series showcases the composing and musical artistry of Philadelphia Jazz musicians. The concert will revisit some of that cutting-edge and challenging music that the group performed last summer, as well as some original music by members of the band, written specifically for their own Mysterious Traveler concerts.
